Ab Exercises for Runners

Quote  |  Reply

I've recently been reading more about running.  I have noticed many posts/articles about the need for additional strengthening of ab muscles due to posture problems and prevention of ineffectual rocking motion during running.

I HATE crunches, situps etc., but i do like Pilates.  Would Pilates be a good substitute for those exercises?   When is the best time to incorporate these ab exercises into my routine?  On a lifting day, easy run day, long run, fast run? And can i do them separately from the rest of my day's routine (I run during lunch at work, but don't have time for anything else)?

I'd do them on your light running day.

There's a ton of good ab exercises out there that require little to no additional equipment. Just search around the forums and you'll find them.

And yes, Pilates has some good ab exercises

Do you already have a lifting day? if so, as long as your doing lots of compound exercises, your already getting plenty of ab work, crunches/situps/etc aren't necessary if that's the case.
