ab work/leg lifts/free weights calories burned?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi-

I have been doing this workout around three or four times a week for the past few months and I have mostly been doing it for toning but now that I don't have time to do much cardio along with it, I am curious if anyone has any clue how many calories (roughly) this burns...I would just like to know so I know how many calories I can eat and not gain!

120 reps of "bicycles (the pilates kind- by this I mean 60 times turning my head right, 60 turning it left, if that makes sense...)

40 leg lifts on each leg, (40 front, 40 sideways upper leg and 40 lower leg, and 40 back)

40 pelvis lifts (for lack of a better term- laying on ground with knees up, then lifting pelivs)

40 of laying on my back then lifting my whole lower body into the air quickly

40 each of lifting 5 lb. weights in each hand (above my head, in front of me, and behind me for triceps)

Aaaaaand for the grand finale doing 42 standing side reach things for the love handles!

This whole thing usually takes me about 30-40 minutes depending on how long I rest in between exercises.  I know this is super specific and not very well explained but if anyone has any kind of clue around how many calories this kind of exercise burns, please let me know!

Thanks :)

Your not going to like this but log it into the activity log. But

Calisthenics(e.g Pushups, Situps, Pullups, Jumping Jacks), Heavy, Vigorous Effort

862 calories per hour

Yeah I guess I should try that to get a really accurate number.  Holy crap if that number is anywhere near right that would be awesome!  Honestly, if it's even like 300 calories I would be really happy.  That means it gives me a little bit of breathing room as far as eating.  Thanks!

There is no way that a routine like the one described will burn 862 Calories in an hour, unless the person weighs like 400 lbs or more.

In all honesty, the caloric burn for a routine like that will be minimal. Within the standard of error for calorie estimations, I'm not sure you should count it at all--it's almost more like casual activity.

If you are not doing cardio, I would recommend that you consider restructuring your routine to give it more intensity and more focus. Given the number of reps you are doing, you are most likely "going in circles" because there is not enough resistance to continue progressing.

From your comments, you have 30-45 min to exercise. That's enough to do a decent higher-intensity workout that will include more effective exercise movements. Even a mediocre routine like Jillian Michaels would be an improvement (although I would recommend something better).

Give it some thought.

It sounds to me like a workout that would be classified as weight lifting, light intensity.  That'll likely burn about 200 calories/hour (but that includes the 100 you would have been burning anyway).  A more effective routine that you could do without equipment would be the calisthenics listed above - things like push-ups, jumping jacks, squats, lunges, etc.  If your workout doesn't get your heart pumping, it's not burning many calories.  That doesn't mean it has to be traditional cardio - strength training is a great workout too and certainly gets the heart pumping when done right.

Thanks for the info guys.  I agree that it probably isn't burning that many calories if I think about it.  However, I think I will continue to do it as my abs are looking quite nice now and I feel like my legs and arms are more toned!  The reason that I have time to do this workout is that I do it as part of my "relaxing time" when I watch t.v. or something for an hour to chill out before I go to bed.  If I have to go to the gym to do cardio then I have to walk to the gym, do cardio for half and hour and shower when I get back, and in my mind it feels like such a hassle comparatively.  I am just super busy and stressed right now with school and grad school apps, but I will try to get to the gym more often...I think I just need to schedule it in mentally ahead of time so I can't keep putting it off so easily because I am tired or something.

@azdak:  Yeah I don't weigh 400 lbs. so I guess not!  I'm 5'8" and 136 lbs. right now, more or less just trying to maintain, but wouldn't MIND losing a few more or getting in better shape.

If you are looking for a good routine that will tax you then try http://www.rosstraining.com/ and get one of his manuals, which are well priced and have great body weight exercises you can do anywhere.
