abdominal distention

Quote  |  Reply

Recently I've noticed that I pretty much have permanent food baby. (as in, my stomach is poking out and i look pregnant) seriously, i think people are going to start asking me when the baby is due because my stomach is poking out so much more than it should for the size of my body.

Do you think if i just fasted for a day or so it would help?  Just clear everything out and start over? like hitting a reset button.

I don't know what will work, but I can tell you that won't work. It'll pop back once you eat again. <shrug>

Hey I've been getting this problem but because I've added alot more fruit and veg too quickly. Are you feeling bloated? It might be an intolerance to some kind of food.

Have you changed anything in your diet? Are you eating more or less of something?

Back during Lent I attempted to give up all meat (except for fish on Fridays). I would always eat sandwiches for lunch, so instead of lunchmeat I'd buy Tofurky slices. As yummy as they were, and I didn't miss meat at ALL, I had to eliminate it from my diet. Something about the tofu and lack of real meat didn't sit well with my intestines and, like you, I looked like I was about to pop - with twins! LOL

I have that problem with veggies too. Eating too many causes me to bloat a lot. I now take Beano with my meals and take another supplement twice a day.

I used to have this problem. I found out that I had an intolerance to wheat gluten. Actually, I can't eat wheat, barley or oats without problems and I also found out soy is a problem for me too.

The first thing I think of with bloating, stomach problems, heart-burn, etc... is a food allergy! If it's not an allergy, your body might just have a problem or intolerance to certain foods making it hard to digest them properly.

You may want to see an allergist or maybe try the process of elimination with certain foods to see how you feel. In other words leave off milk for a week and then add it back. Next leave off wheat for a week and then add it back... etc.

Not sure if anyone has recommended this yet but - try increasing your fiber intake.

I eat a high fibre cereal (Fibre One - not sure if that is just in Canada or not) in the morning with 1/2 a banana.  I supplement with Metamucil (caplets) - taking three in the morning and three in the afternoon.  I drink as much water as i can remember to drink as well. Taking the metamucil caplets helps with water intake as with each dose - i have to drink 500 ml of water (2 - 8oz servings).  On average - i am getting about 30-40 g of fibre a day - seeing as fiber is not absorbed by the body...it is a big help.  Keeps you regular too... :)

This keeps my bloating (from eating lots of veggies - lol) down.

Worth a shot!

I used to get this. I cut out bread and dairy and it seemed to stop it. I would try cutting out one thing a week for a week and seeing what helps.

wow thank you everyone!  I HAVE been eating a lot of fruit lately Like, i MOSTLY eat fruit.

it could totally be other things that you've all mentioned too.  i think i'm going to try cutting things out and seeing what happens.

I had some of that going on for a while.  I believe it was an intolerance to sorbitol and xylitol.  What I did was eat the same safe foods for two weeks, then fasted for 48 hours.  It did sort of "reset" things for me.  I haven't had any problems since then, and I have been avoiding those ingredients.

Eating too much fiber could be the problem.  Fiber quite often makes you bloat, because your body doesn't digest it, so it kinda hangs around in your stomach.  Make sure you're drinking enough water to counteract the effects of the fiber.  It can also give you gas.  Are you eating cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, etc)?  These are major gas & bloat producers.  Try adjusting your diet so you don't get the bloat.  In the mean time, here are some things that have helped me when I'm bloated:

  • lying down with a heating pad on my stomach
  • going for a walk
  • gas-x or beano
  • yoga (there are poses online especially for digestion)
  • increase water intake
