I have been taking Wellbutrin for awhile. It has not made me gain weight (in fact, it initially helped me to lose weight). My doctor recently suggested abilify as a add-on for depression. But I have heard it can make you gain weight so I am afraid to take it. Has anybody taken it in combination with Wellbutrin and can speak to this? Also I have heard it can decrease sex drive, which Wellbutrin doesn't. So I don't want to become fat and sexless because then I really will get depressed . . . .Please advise!
I have been on wellibutrin and abilify for the last year. In fact I have lost weight. I have lost close to thirty lbs. As far as the sex drive goes, i was on paxil befor these meds and paxil ruin my sex life. I now have a new found freedom again with sex. I desire it once again and I enjoy it. Of all the meds that I have been on these two have been the best for me. I have suffered from severe depression since 1995 and have been on all different groups of meds and I know these are the ones best for me. In all my weight loss is better and my sex life iw 100% better.
Thank you! That's encouraging!
I've been on Wellbutrin and Abilify for more than a year (plus several other antidepressants) and don't think my weight gain is attributable to Abilify/or other drugs. It is attributable, I think, to a 5 month period of severe depression in which all I wanted and ate were carbohydrates-in mass quantities--adding 35 pounds to my already overweight self. No negative effect on my sex life but Paxil was horrible for me for sex and weight.
Im on 400mg of Wellburtin SR (sustained release)a day though I didn't know about combining it with Abilify... probably because its an anti-psychotic. I know that Wellbutrin or bupropion is more commonly used with SSRI's to alleviate the SSRI side effects. (Wellbutrin is a good add-on drug for some people but the risk of seizures increases)
One thing about anti depressants is knowing what anti depressant does what. Just because there are a few people who take Wellbutrin and Abilify together doesn't mean you should. Frankly this "Abilify" being previously marketed as an anti-psychotic (which it is) with little interest was switched over and mass marketed once the FDA approved it to be co-used with certain antidepressants. HUGE BANK HERE... Darn wolf in sheep's cloths is what that is...
There are 3 kinds of antidepressants available on the market; Nicotinic antagonist norepinephrine and dopamine reuptake inhibitor(Wellbutrin), Serotonin re-uptake inhibitors(SSRI), and Monoamine oxidases inhibitors(MAOI). Each has its own specific purpose and works on specific areas and functions in the brain.
Reuptake simply put is; the drug grabbing the stuff before it gets to leave so you can have fun a little longer.
Each feel good area reacts differently when you hold on to this stuff and use it again.
I find that when I take an SSRI I have no sex drive at all. Wellburtin is not an SSRI (selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor) and it is not a MAOI (Monoamine ozidase inhibitor). I found that sex was enhanced and much more fulfilling once I mastered my thoughts. I have never felt so good during climax (not even on p.o.t).
It took a month for me to fully adjust to the medication and I did become more depressed during that time... I also dropped 20pounds during that month. Remember please!! antidepressants effect everyone differently and Wellburtin has a high rate of seizures.
Abilify is an anti-psychotic not an antidepressant and is a receptor antagonist. Personally I dont think Wellbutrin and Abilify are a good combo unless you have a severe physiological illness, also its kind of weird the two are paired since Wellbutrin is dopamine re-uptake inhibitor and Abilify like all anti-phychotics blocks dopamine receptors in the nigrostriatal pathway of the brain.
Simply put; "Im taking a dopamine reuptake inhibitor but where is my dopamine??? I wanna hold onto a little longer....oh.... Abilify wont let it through.... thats no fun"
You also risk developing the permanent neurological disorder Tardive Dyskinesia.
Do not blindly trust your doctor please!!
It's me again, K192, I have to say I don't recall on the medical junk from the medications that I have been on. I will tell you that I have been on 300mg wellibutrin and 7.5mg of abilify and I haven't felt this good in many many years. Sex is good again. Now this from being on these two meds since april 2008. I have been diagnoised treatment resistant depression, in other words severe depression and medication tends not to sustain me for any length of time. This is the first mix of meds that have worked for me since 1995. I say Thank You God for abilify. Say NO to paxil. It was the worst of any medication that I have took. If you truly want weight gain and no sex drive paxil will do this to you.
I've been on wellbutrin for a couple years and lamictal for several years. I used to be on zoloft and lamictal and gained 25 lbs, then went off the zoloft and went on wellbutrin and yeah I lost weight but I had to work my ass off to do it. Then I realized the wellbutrin and lamictal wasn't enough for me, so I went back on 50 mg of zolot. Eventually that stopped working, and I was depressed as hell (lying in my bed all day crying, not showering, etc.) So my doctor took me off the zoloft and out me on .5 mg of abilify (the tiniest dose you can possibly take). The abillify worked immediately, and I haven't gained any weight, because I don't have the same cravings that I had on zoloft. However I haven't lost anything yet either, but I've only been on the ailify for lesss than 2 weeks. In fact, my doctor told me that a lot of the people for whom she prescribed the abilify lost weight. So the combination can possibly make you loe weight I think. I started jenny Craig as well, so I'm trying to lose right now along with the meds. I'll keep you posted, but to answer your question (finally lol) I do not believe you will be gaining weight with the abilify and wellbutrin. You wont have the cravings that normal SSRI's give you. Good luck!!
I am brand new here, but looks like some of you really know much more than i do. I've been treated for Panic Attacks/Syndrome ever since 1993 with Klonopin (clonazepam 0.5mg twice a day) and my panic has been pretty much under control. Starting 2003 I've developed depression, generalized compulsive disorder, and different kinds of phobia. I've been on Prozac and Paxil with almost no result, except for low sex drive... After a sad episode of deep depression i've been on Effexor 150 mg for 2 years, than on Cymbalta 60 and then 80, and 120, plus my Klonopin, plus Wellbutrin 175 SR, for the past two years. Very low sex drive, but better mood and less anxiety. I've been better, but this year I got again a bad spell of depression. Now I am on Cymbalta 60mg, Wellbutrin 100 SR, Abilify 10mg, plus the Klonopin. I've always been very fit. This time I started to gain weight, despite of exercising and playing tennis. Sex drive is not better, but I generally feel better. Can anybody make a sense of what I am taking? Has anybody had a similar treatment? Any answer or comment is highly appreciate!
It does sound complicated-but everyone's situation is! I feel like I've been on every med in the book for depression/bipolar/anxiety in different dosages and combinations.
I have never taken Abilify in conjunction with Wellbutrin, but I was on it for a little while with Effexor. I couldn't stand the Effexor side effects and asked to be taken off of that. I don't know if you're on that/if it's working for you, etc., but I remained on the Abilify (which is not typical since it's usually an add-on to other anti-depressants), and I am of the beleif that it contributed to 30-40 lbs of weight gain.
I am currently 20 years old and a dance major in college. I have always danced, and I have been a vegetarian for years. I gained this weight on the Abilify within 8 months to a year, and it caused a lot of self-esteem issues and depression because changing your body and your mind is difficult to adjust to when you use your body every day for your "art" or "career." My parents and doctors just said to "keep exercising and eating well"-I felt as though if I danced any more or ate any better I would drop dead! So I made the irrational decision to go off of it on my own.
Good news/bad news-I lost about 15 lbs. within a month or two of stopping it. In a sick way, I felt validated that it was the medication and not my lifestyle. Bad news-I ended up in the psych ward after a failed suicide attempt that occurred during a mixed episode of bipolar. Lesson learned: don't do ANYTHING without consulting your doctor. Since I am young, it is a delicate balance of listening to him but also voicing my needs and how much of the side effects I can endure.
All in all, we all understand that meds work differently in different dosages and combinations for everyone. In the research I've done, long-term use of Abilify can cause insulin resistance, carbohydrate cravings (hence weight gain), and generally mess up your metabolism. It's really a question of whether you think it is causing weight gain, and if the benefits of the medication outweigh the cost of some weight gain...
I am so sorry to hear that... I had a failed attempt myself while I was on Prozac. But you're confirming my fear of gaining because Abilify, plus over the past months or so my eyes are constantly twitching (I'm afraid not to get "Tardive Dyskinesia" which is known to be related to Abilify... and if i think about the nightmare to change medication... But maybe I should if abilify had so many unpleasant (and even severe) side effects! Thanks for answering and good luch with your dancing!
Like I said, weigh the costs and benefits. I know Abilify can work really well for some people (my dad is Bipolar Type I and is taking it and doing fine)... I didn't have any "side effects" so to speak coming off of it, besides drastic mood shifts but that would be due to the unsupervised and cold-turkey way in which I stopped taking it. If you go off of it under doctor supervision, I don't think it has the same effects as withdrawal from Effexor.
It's interesting you mentioned the eye twitching, because that came up for me a few weeks ago and lasted a few days. I wasn't on the Abilify at the time, but I attribute that to stress and anxiety.
Good luck, stay well.
If I decide to drop Abilify I will certainly do it under my neuro-pharmacologist supervision (and eventually get on another booster, if necessary). My eye twitching is somehow constant, one day better, the other worse, and I found on Medline stuff mentioning it in relation to Tardive Dyskinesia, wich is a pretty serious and often permanent condition induced by drugs such Abilify and other. It's not necessary that all the bad side-effects will show in the same one person, but it's tough luck.
The side effects of allergy medications keep some people from using them. Natural remedies can be a great alternative, but some are more effective than others.
