I'm 21 years old, have never had this before, and I've always tested negative for HPV. So, naturally, these results confused and frightened me! My doc is doing a colposcopy today and I'm really nervous.

Any words of encouragement would help me a lot. Thanks everybody <3

Just got back. They did 2 biopsies so I'm really crampy and uncomfortable. >_<

It is pretty common to have a abnormal pap...I did about 7 years ago....got scared, moved, never got it checked....then got pregnant 4 years ago and was scared I had some big problem brewing. It turned out fine and since my daughter was born, I have had other fine paps. Likely it is nothing. I do know a girl who had some abnormal cells that they removed and she was fine too. either way, good for you for getting it checked. That is the best thing you can do!!

yeah, don't worry.  i had an irregular pap, followed by a biopsy where she took four tissue samples from my cervix (3, 6, 9, and 12 o'clock), two of which came back "significantly abnormal."  so they did a cone biopsy, which came back completely normal.  as crazy as it sounds, they got all the abnormal cells with the first biopsy.

HPV is very common and condoms aren't totally effective in prevention, so chances are we're all going to have an abnormal pap at some point.  the thing is not to avoid it so it doesn't become something more serious.

Ok, so your pap is abnormal but your hpv test is negative still? Just getting it straight...

I just found a wart on my ummm, ya' know. I just got married to the same guy I was seeing for the last 3 years and have only had unprotected sex with him and my previoius husband. Let me tell you, it was totally scary and gross. My dr. said it's HPV even though I tested negative for it last April. She said it doesn't mean my guy was unfaithful...it could have been dormant in either one of us for a long time. Also, it's treatable.

Anyway, don't make yourself crazy over these things. I know it's hard because of where it's at but you've gotta wait until the results come back. You've got your youth and previous negative paps on your side. You're a smart cookie to even get your annual paps done because a lot of women put it off. Keep us posted.

I had an abnormal smear a couple of years ago and had to go for a couple of colposcopies, however my smear this year has turned out just fine!  Abnormal cells in that area are quite common at some point in your life and are generally nothing to worry about, especially if you are proactively looking after your health in the way you are.  Hope the cramps wear off soon!

I really appreciate your replies guys. Makes me feel a lot better. The nurse said everything looked normal to her, and since I'm young, healthy and don't smoke that these abnormalities are probably something that will go away on their own.

The next 7-10 days while I wait for my results are going to suck though..

I'm surprised they gave you a biopsy so quickly.  I had an abnormal pap back in Sept and they are telling me to wait until March to get another pap. Now theyre saying I may want to wait even longer for "strategy."  I have never tested positive for HPV either so I am hoping it was a random issue.  I kind of just want to get it over with, you know?

I was just thinking the same thing...

I got my results back, and it looks like I have mild displaysia, which shows that I have HPV. The good news is that since I'm young, healthy and don't smoke this is something that will heal on its own within a couple months. I just need to keep getting regular paps and keep an eye on it.

I'm sooo relieved!
