ABS!!! HELP NEED NEW IDEAs
I used to do sports year round in high school, but now being out of it for more than a year, I have gained some tummy/thigh flab :( Like I can pinch an inch, which I was not able to do then.
I am starting to do the normal crunches, but I kinda want some new ideas that are more fun and less "ugh".
Also for legs, I do leg raises, squats and lunges, and ride my bike every so often. So maybe ideas there too?
Once school starts and I have a more solid schedule then I can go to the gym and run because I will have more time(no work), so this is only for a 2 week period.
Please help ;)
Here are some pieces of advice :
1) If you aren't eating right you will never be able to get the definition that you want. Six small meals a day containing a lot of protein, complex carbs from whole grains, fruits/vegetables, and healthy fats. Plus a lot of water. If you follow this type of diet six days a week, and only have one cheat day a week, then you will be on your way.
2) Do compound barbel lifts that engage your core like squats and deadlifts. I have gotten way better abs from lifting then I ever did from endless sets of crunches. It is all about learning how to engage your core on all of your lifts.
3) Add in some HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) for cardio 2-3 times a week. It is much better at attacking bodyfat and sparing muscle. Plus it really speeds up your metabolism for a long time after you finish.
Indeed. Good, smart nutrition and cardio are the best bets for decreasing body fat. Targeted resistance exercise (whether they're crunches, lunges, or squats) really only helps strengthen those particular areas, rather than spot-reducing fat.
I've never understood the six meals a day thing. I got into the best shape at basic training. That was 3 meals a day. Running 45mins one day and the next day doing calisthenics. Everyday except Sunday. And of course some push ups throughout the day.... But nonetheless, I haven't been in that good of shape in a while.
BTW, I'm talking about physical appearance, not my level of fitness. I'm a better athlete today, but not as lean as I want to be.
All good advice on the diet, nutrition and exercise combo above...
but if you still would like some ideas for variation on the traditional ab routine...
I find planks great.
Plank to push ups, plank jacks, squat thrusts, twisting planks and plank rows!!!
Twisting planks are GREAT for obliques! Take a look -
