Accepting I'm overweight and I HAVE to do something abt it!!!!!

Quote  |  Reply

I chose my nickname hoping that looking at that number all the time will help me get motivated.  I went from 145lbs (5'9) to almost 190lbs in 3 years!!!!  It happened so gradually that in the begining it was kindda cute...i went 150 then 155 and didnt think it was a big problem.  the 165...170 and I started getting worried.  Then almost 180 and I started getting depressed.  From 180 to 190 and i have NO idea when that happened..and now I'm gonna have to accept that I am overweight!! (not that I wasn't at 170 and 180..but now it really hit me!)

I've never been really skinny.  I've never really wanted to since I was more than happy at 145 (size 7).

I met my b/f 2 years ago when I was 170lbs.  He is 6'2 180lbs and now I weigh MORE THAN HIM!!  I had NO idea i was 190 until I weigh myself today after almost a year.  He is very supportive and nice and doesnt act like it bothers him, but I know he would want me to get healthier.  Actually today was the only time he commented on my weight in a mean way (since we had a big fight).  He looked at me and said "wow u have gained weight...i never really noticed it so much until now.."

I am seriously getting very depressed.

helpppp I had a hard time accepting that i need to lose around 40lbs!!! today I did 40 mins cardio and ate cereal for breakfast and watemelon the rest of the day.  I think I am finding motivation and I can HOPEFULLY wear everything I have in my closet in 2-3 months.

I just found this site on google and dont really know how to use it very well yet.  Give me some tips to stay motivated and tell me how u stay motivated.  When did u realize your weight was getting out of control?  what did u do abt it??

I'm not 100% sure but if you are 5'9 then medically speaking you are in the exact weight range you should be in to be healthy. I'm 5'8 and I am suppose to be 175. Maybe you need to go talk to a doctor before you begin anything. Just because you were always 145 doesn't meant that it was a "healthy" weight for you.

jovannab, i'm 5'8" and i was overweight (bmi 25.4) at 168.  i dunno what scale you're using, but you're not "supposed to be 175."  (you're not "supposed to be" anything, but 175 is definitely above the healthy bmi range.)

jovannab as much as i want that to be true I dont think it is.  for 5'9 MAX should be 170-175 (and that if u have a big frame...I have a medium one) to be considered healthy.

190pounds,

I was in the same weight boat as you (5'9", maxed out at 195).  Since using CC since May 5 (when I weighed 188) I am now down to 176 and much healthier.  My goal is to get to the 145-150 range.  I have learned so much from this sight and I feel confident that I will reach my goal in time. I have a small frame, so 165 is my max halthy weight.

CC gives you wonderful (free!) tools to help you on your journey; everything is covered on the site, in one way or another.

Good luck!

Ellen

My tips:

  • Use the tools here to find out how much you should eat to lose about 5 pounds per month (a 500 calorie/day deficit).
  • Eat the recommended calories from a wide variety of healthy foods (cereal and watermelon are not a very balanced intake).
  • Make food and exercise choices that fit into your lifestyle and that you can see yourself maintaining happily for the rest of your life.
  • Change your screen name to what you want to be, not what you are.  For me, positive reinforcement works better than negative reinforcement!
  • Read the Ask Mary archives to find out how lifestyle changes work -- you are "new" to "dieting" and she has lots of great advice.
  • Log everything you eat as accurately as possible to train yourself about portions and hold yourself accountable -- and minimize the posts ranting about how you aren't losing weight.  (Okay, the last one is more more me than you Wink).

I checked using the BMI calculator and you currenltly have a BMI 0f 28.1. CC recommends a BMI of between 18.5 and 24.9 as healthy.

Weightlossresources.co.uk uses a BMI of between 20-25 as healthy. Using their charts your healthy weight is between 137 - 168lbs. Bear in mind that BMI is just a guide - if you start working out and develop lean muscle mass, you may look smaller but have a higher BMI than a lower-weight person who has a higher body fat percentage.

If you want to keep on losing weight you need to get real about your diet. Eating cereal and then nothing but watermelon isn't healthy or sustainable. You can still eat on a diet! You just need to eat healthily, in moderation, and as high-nutrient foods as possible. Use the CC tools to work out a healthy daily calorie count.

Good luck!
