accidental milk

Quote  |  Reply

very early this morning i ordered a cappuccino, and for some reason forgot to say soy (assuming that was because it was so early and i hadnt yet had a cappuccino!). i havent had dairy in a long time, i am vegan, and i didnt sip the drink until i was a few blocks away. i decided to drink it anyways, i was too lazy to go back and i would hate to have to explain my stupidity to the barista, and i wasnt about to toss away a 4 dollar cappuccino and have to buy another coffee. what are your thoughts about this? would every other vegan have done something differently? i do feel a little sick, assume from all the fatty milk i am not used to.

i personally would not have drinken it because i hate the taste of milk and it grosses me out (i'm a vegan too.) but i don't think it's a huge deal, it's not like the vegan police are going to come after you ;)

I've done similar things with smoothies not realizing there is dairy in it and I've drank it ... I usually get a stomach ache from dairy now though so it's more a weighing of how much I want it vs how back the pain will be - lol!

It depends.  Are you a vegan for health reasons or ethical reasons?

I'm a new vegan and my mom bought me one of those advent calanders with the little window you open with milk chocolates in them. They are so small so I figure just one little milk chocolate a day isnt going to compromise my decison to go vegan for ethical reasons too much. After december tho no more milk chocolate! :)...anyway the point of my little story is to make ya feel better about drinking a cappacino made with milk. I feel like once and awhile we can't be perfect. Although I gave up drinking milk awhile ago -- before i went straight vegan -- and If i drink it now i get horrible stomach achs so personally I wouldn't have drank it because I would make me sick all day.

Well, it was a mistake, but by the point you realized it, there wasn't anything you could do.  Dumping it out is as bad a drinking it, so you shouldn't feel too bad.  Maybe tomorrow morning you should write a note on the back of your hand so you don't forget to say "soy" in a pre-caffeine stupor!

i am vegan for purely ethical reasons. i do have stomache from it though, i think just because its been so long. you have all been comforting i think i am able to live with my mistake, but i am not sure i would drink it if it happened again, because of the stomache ache. if i have already paid for the milk that has been used, and i went back to get a soy one, the dairy would have already been depleated and need to be restocked, and my damage would have been done to supporting the dairy industry. ill get soy tattooed on my knuckles. yes? no? haha.

I, too, am vegan. And it really depends on you. Because you're asking it seems like it does bother you. I would hope you wouldn't need approval from others because they don't make your choices or walk in your shoes. What I can offer, however, is you're human. Vegan, sure, perfect, no. You do your best to make the world a better place one choice at a time but don't sweat the small stuff. Just make a more conscience effort to say soy next a.m. =) Maybe...put a post it on something you carry (not kidding- I can be brain dead in the early a.m. hours too since I get up at 3-4am depending on the day!). Then you can just look down and say it or grin and show it to the barista. "Yeah, one of these please" and have the soy underlined or something haha. Eh, what are you gonna do? As for feeling sick...could be physical just as much as emotional. Can't say to be sure but...don't make yourself sick over worrying about something that is done with. Tomorrow's another chance to order a cappucino with soy = ) Mmmm...

Sorry it made you sick, but I think you did well on drinking it, throwing good food away sound more unethical to me

well im vegetarian now, but i was vegan for a while and i did something simular, went out with my bf and i got a veggie burger, remembered the whole no cheese thing and forgot them had mayo on it which is egg so i was kinda having the same thought process. i ate it cause it was my mistake and asking to have a veggie burger remade in most places takes forever.

if you dont think there was anything wrong with that then i wouldn worry about it, as far as i know there isnt a law that says a vegan cant have one mess up now and then. just be careful cause sometimes it can make you really sick (like finding bacon in your soup when youve not had meat in a year @__@)

Don't let it bother you too much, it was a simple mistake. I work in a cafe and personally, I give special treatment to nice people, so I would have remade your drink on soy if you had come back and asked politely. =]
