I am beginning to wonder how accurate my calorie count really is. Most of the food I look for is not there so I have to pick something close to what it is. Then you have to hope the calorie count is correct. Most of the dinners that are listed are processed or store bought. I cook fresh. So for instance tonight I had a turkey cutlet. It's not there so I pick Perdue Fresh Turkey breast meat and then have to put in the olive oil, etc. For lunch I ate baby spinach raw with cucumbers and chicken salad. The chicken salad they list is from Wegman's prepared. So I picked a can that wasn't the one I use and tried to get a count for each ingredient. There really has to be a better way!
Generally I assemble the ingredients from the calorie counter database or from the food labels and tag them. Then it is easy to add them again as a group. Also you could try searching the recipes. Here is one I found for chicken cutlets:http://caloriecount.about.com/chicken-cutlet- recipe-r194486 - you can add this to your food log with one click.
Like you, I cook fresh so many of the prepared foods listed in Calorie Count do not apply.
I have learned to create "recipes" for the dishes I most commonly eat. So even a favorite sandwich would get a "recipe." The way I prepare my coffee each morning is a "recipe."
Then the next time I eat/drink this item, I just click on My Recipes, find the item and add it to the day's Food Log.
This is the most efficient way I've found to log recurring items.
My Husband and I are using this website to loose weight. We are going about it on our own. I dont know how to add the calories from what I cooked, so what we did was bought a Weight Watchers Complete cookbook. It lists at the end of the recipe exactly how much a serving is and the Calories and the all so I just add it to my food lists when we have it. We actually REALLY like the foods and at the same time is teaching me how to cook healthier. I even made my husband Banana Cream Pie that is only 146 calories per piece of Pie!!! He LOVES it and helps him get his sweet fix at the same time staying within his calorie intake for the day. Just my little input.
I use whats on the package for the calorie info. Take each ingredient on it's own and then once prepared divide by the number of servings you end up getting out of it, or better yet weigh each portion etc. It is tedious but it does make it more accurate.

Figure out what type of eater you are and you might just find the answer to permanent weight loss.
