How accurate are daily weight losses and gains?
Asked by searchingsamasthi on Sep 11, 2009 in Weight Loss

How can I lose or gain a whole pound in one day when following my calorie intake?  Weighing myself everyday is a frustrating endeavor!  I see a definite downward trend in a logical way, about a tenth of a pound here and there.  Then out of the blue I am up a pound in one day! Generally when this happens I have eaten more (200-300 extra calories).

Answer

Weight shifts from day-to-day, unrelated to calorie intake, as the body holds and releases water.  Hormonal shifts, sodium intake, and other factors are the cause.  The scale does not differentiate between pounds of water, or pounds of fat, muscles, fecal material, or anything else, and so the measurement it produces is crude at best.  If you chose to weigh yourself daily - and it's not necessary - then simply write it down and move on.  Continue to follow the trend (as you do) and focus on your self-care routines instead of your weight.
