Achieving goals along the way
One of the ways I used to keep motivated, is to set goals that I can achieve along the way to my bigger goal of a life style change.
Several months ago I saw a commercial for "Taking it Off" were Reg a member of show tried running up the Citadel hill in Halifax only to have to stop and say, "I want to get up there". I thought it would be a great goal to run the same route to the top.
Well on Saturday I got that change. I ran from Dartmouth across the MacDonald bridge into down town Halifax. Went to the dock clock by the water's edge and started my run up George Street to the Citadel. It took me 3 min 35 sec to complete the run from the dock to the Citadel lawn. I then ran back across the bridge to Dartmouth. The total 21.3km run took 2hours and 12 minutes.
Even thought it was not my best time for the half, the run was one of the best experiences I have had. I set a goal and completed it. Amazing what practice and perseverance can do. Here is to you Reg for giving me the inspiration.
Now I am working on what my next goal is going to be and I need some ideas.
I would love to hear about the goals you have set or have achieved for yourself

good job! im trying to start running again...im only trying to run 3 miles a day bit i end up walking...my cavs cramp up and it make it extremely painful to run..but great job on accomplishing your goal!
Congratulations, and a great topic. But where the heck are you talking about, with all these place names? :)
Anyway, setting specific goals is a great idea and one I keep saying I'll do but do not get around to! I would probably want to break mine into 3 types of goals: weight loss milestones, exercise/achievment goals, and "other" (not sure what will go in there!!) Of course, I want to have long- and short-term goals, too. And then, there is the issue of "rewards," too! See why I don't get started? I have too complicted a "goals system" to work with!
BUT--it sounds like you have a pretty good handle on setting running goals-if you have done a 1/2 marathon, maybe it's time to aim for a full marathon--or not . . . You could aim to improve your time on a specific course, things like that.
Or maybe you want to aim for some other goals--how about sharing your good health with others and working with a group who could use some help, either losing weight or becoming more fit? Volunteer at a school or other program, for example, and teach kids how to enjoy exercise/running. . . Your goal could be to get ONE person to the point where s/he can enjoy a 3 mile run, for example.
I'm not sure what other types of goals you might be interested in, but I hope you get some good ideas!
I'm working up energy to take a walk. I look forward to compleatng that goal.
My other mini-goal is getting under 300. That sounds easy, but it's notl Also, staying tere is another goal. Other than that, I'll take one step at a time.
At least I have my new friends helping me. Thanks for your support.
hello,
your post is very impressive!
my goals are just now mostly numbers. the first one was getting from Obese to Overweight category (just got there a few days ago, now, after eating too much yesterday, i actually am back at Obese, but am quite sure it is only temporary:))
another goal is to be 85 kilos (am 93 now), will celebrate it with a mini bottle of champagne (i bought it already as a motivator to have at home).
another goal is to go hiking with my friends who are very fit. i would not go now as i would slow the whole group, and they are not hiking often, but i will surely feel like a success once i am fit anough to be able to go with them.
another goal is clothing sizes (38 european for pants, 42 for tops) which is a long term one, probably next summer or so, the weight loss tends to get slower as i lose more, so i am not sure how long this will take
mkculs, thanks for the pass it along idea. As for the place names, I live in Ottawa, Ontario Canada and I got the change to go to Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada and run along a historic route.
manathies, keep it up, you can do it. you deserve it.
ka2007, loosing 27.9 kgs/ 61 pounds is impressive.
Over the summer/early fall I would always run up citadel hill! Well, from Quinpool road to citadel hill, not very far, but it IS a hefty ways up. So fun and I feel so achieved after doing so. I always run down on the grass to, that's a lot of fun! haha. I can't believe the amount you ran! The bridge is a nice ways away. I'm very impressed. That would be my next goal.
Run up citadel, back down and across the bridge. Working on it.! Have a great day!
