Will I get acne if I go off the pill Diane 35 - ED? Help!

Quote  |  Reply

I have heard that most people that go OFF the pill called “ Diane 35 ED” other wise known as ‘ Dianette” in the UK, get TERRIBLE acne.

Literally, every person who goes off it inevitably seam to get bad acne.

NOT FAIR! I have been on Diane since about 16, I am 22 now, and I do NOT want to get acne.

I only eat pure foods, raw nuts and raw fruit, raw vegetables, proteins ( fish and chicken, some times other sea foods) and THAT IS IT. I do not have Any sugar. NO additives. NO preservatives. NO man made artificial stuff. EVER. NO EXECPTIONS. I have grown to love only natural and pure foods.

I am so angry because if I ONLY put pure things into my body, and lead such a healthy life, then why the heck would my hormones go all over the place if my body is being looked after SO well?

When I say I eat pure, I really mean it, I honestly only eat a cave man style diet, no bottled sauces with tones of additives or sugar, just pure and 100% natural foods…

I went off the pill after anorexia and I got acne, but that was also because starving myself and then gaining weight messed my hormones up, and ON TOP of that I ALSO went off the pill at the same time, so BOTH of those things upset my hormones. I do not know if going off the pill alone is enough to cause bad acne again.

My anorexia caused me to develop PCOS to some degree, the starvation and going off the pill really messed with my hormones

I lead a toxic life before, eating unnatural foods and etc and now I have gone cold turkey off ANY processed foods and only eat a natural diet so I am wondering if this could alleviate the PCOS?

The way I see it, if I am extremely pure and 100% perfect with my body, then there should be less chance that my body will go spastic and make me get acne JUST because I stop taking a pill.

I don’t want to be on Diane for ever.. HELP!

Your skin might get a little out of wack, but unless you naturally have bad acne it will probably clear itself up. It'll probably just need a little time to balance itself out, that's if you even get acne at all.

Before the pill I did have typical teenage acne, but I also ate a terrible diet and didn’t exercise enough. I never had sever acne, just enough to stop me from having nice skin.

The acne would have also been due to my unhealthy life style; even ON the pill, my acne only cleared completely once I started to eat healthily.

I think I am going to give my body a chance to adjust to leading a pure and natural life for a couple of years and THEN to go off the pill; I have not been healthy for long enough for me to trust that my body will fully grasp the benefits and act according to how it has been treated.

I will see an expert, a Gyno or endocrinologist, and discus perhaps going off Diane, and switching to a lower dose pill to “ wean myself” off it.

How does that all sound?

Ok, basically you're only on Diane because you have PCOS.  The small amount of ethinyl estradiol and cyproterone acetate in the pill helps to control your testosterone.  The reason MOST people who are on this pill get acne when they come off it is because their testosterone is no longer being controlled.  Excess testosterone (as I'm sure you're well aware) leads to oily skin, acne, abnormal hair growth (body) or hair loss (scalp), and a plethora of other PCOS symptoms.

If you are also on another medication for your hormones, such as spironolactone, or a higher dose of individual cyproterone acetate then you will probably have no noticeable effects from coming off the pill.  If you are not on another hormone medication then you may experience some changes.  These 'changes' are what your body is naturally like when your hormones are allowed to do what they want to do naturally, without being masked by a medication.  Eg, it is possible that you could develop oily skin and acne.  Remember that's only a maybe though.

By the way its great that you follow such a healthy, natural and clean diet.  Unfortunately the foods that you eat will have little effect on your PCOS symptoms, unless you suffer from insulin resistance.  In this case a low GI diet is the way to go.  Although again, this won't combat the symptoms above.

You say that anorexia caused your PCOS.  That's not a cause of PCOS as far as I'm aware.

Basically, if you have a hormone disorder and PCOS you need to talk to an endocrinologist about your concerns.

Hope this helps!

Oh also, if you do go off Diane and get acne and your hormones aren't that bad as to need spirotone or cyproterone acetate (you would need to get blood tests done), you could try Roaccutane.  However this is only prescribed for severe acne.  Just a thought.

Hi

Sorry if this has allready bin sead but I couldnt be botherd to read all the outher stuf. You might find that alot of the people that are coming off of dianette wer only put on dianette to get rid of acne, as I was. So wen they come off of it their skin just reterns to how its ment to be, the pill hase just bin masking the acne. I know this from exsperiens I was 13 wen I was put on the pill because of cronik acne, im now 20 and 3 years ago I desided to come of the pill, my skin went beack to exsactly how it hade bin wen I was 13. thats just how my skin is.

Obviosly I cant say that it wont mess with ur homones. I dont know enouf about it to say that, its just that iv never actuly none eany one that has bin put on dianette that was only put on it fore contreseption, because its not the best pill on the market, normaly people are put on it fore acne or some outher hormonal problems along side with conteaseption.

oh and normaly the doctor dosnt recomend staying on dianette if u are only using it fore contraseption and not fore controling acne aswell.

well hope that I have bin helpful.

I was put on Diane for my skin, as you mentioned it is not prescribed JUST for contraception.

I never had sever acne just the typical teen acne, and I was unhealthy too so that does not help as your body cannot function at its best in order to promote healthy skin.

It is your hormones that make your skin how it is, and hormones can be altered; it is not your skin, it is the hormones that cause the acne.

There are types of acne due to oily skin and over active sebaceous glands I am not sure if it is due to hormones but SOME acne is not so hormone driven.

Any way, I have decided to keep up my healthy life style for another 2 years and then go off the pill and work with a specialist to wean myself off it by using other medication with lower doses of what Diane has so my body can get used to it and the change is not so sudden.

As much as I want to see if I can have a natural period, the possible acne is just not worth it I have been through too much already and don’t want to deal with disgusting skin again.

There is plenty of time to figure out a way to come off it later on, after I get my braces off so at least I will have great teeth if my skin goes crazy! BUT if I work with an expert then I hopefully I can avoid bad acne and settle for a few pimples instead!

Hi There!

I have recently got married at the end of last year and decided to go off of the pill. My pill was BRENDA 35-ED, which is exactly the same as DIANE. I had been on the pill for my skin since i was 16. I figured that surely my skin would hopefully be ok (hello i'm now 27!) but it's gone a little crazy. I've always been told i have lovely skin, but since going off the pill it's been quite distressing.

My pimples have stayed clear of my face- it's almost flawless thank goodness, but i have now got them all across my shoulders, upper chest and upper back! My hair is also falling out more than usual.

It was REALLY bad a couple of weeks ago, but i have started exfoliating with a black head remover scrub and toning my skin over the last week and i have seen massive improvements! I thoroughly reccomend it! I've also started to take a dose of fish oil every morning to help with my omega-3.

Basically the pill regulates hormones (as we all know), so when you go off there will be some sort of effects. Other than that though, i feel fantastic! I was prepared for my skin to go a bit off but knew it would fix itself one my body had time to adjust- and it has. It's been 3 months since I was on the pill and as i said before i am definitely seeing improvements.

I really do feel for you, as i KNOW bad skin can be so stressful, but it'll all be ok after time. Plus it feels fantastic letting your own body take control of itself without being ruled by those nasty artificial things! :o)

Bite the bullet sweetie and brave it for a couple of months. It's worth it! :o)
