ACRONYM ABUSE!!

SO OVER IT!  What is happening to the world?  SPELL IT OUT PEOPLE...before you forget how to spell!

Anyone with kids/siblings that use the new language?   How did it start?  Text message and IM?

Laugh...it took me about 5 minutes to decipher that first sentence!

I think it came about by text messaging and chatting forums in general....but you're right, how long does it take to spell it out?!

OK, that's a pet peeve right there.

Misspelling simple words like life. I know tinker did it jokingly, but some people don't and it's like "Unless english is your second language, learn how to spell. Please!"

Oh... I so VERY agree! All acronyms deserve a peaceful existence. Abusing them is a sickness so prevalent in society today! ;-)

The second worst form of acronym abuse: everyone has a disorder that can be expressed in acronyms.

Separately - but just as irritating - are the individuals who type their messages entirely in capitals.

I do get a laugh when someone types in multiple extra "like" though... 
"It's like this really great ..."

I don't mind using it in text messages... basically because you only have so many characters allowed, and it takes forever to type out full words. But, on MSN, email and forums like this, I don't mind the basics, like: LOL, j/k, brb and TOTM. well, at least those are the ones I usually use. But, I have friends who text message me and its so cryptic I have to call them and ask them what the heck they meant.

like no way - they like inject the word like in like every other sentence?  like, wow, man.

my daughter has trouble spelling and I tease her about.  she actually spelled stress, strees, last night.  I was like omg, gtfo, isn't your spelling gr8?!?!  :)

I think the acronyms are playing a part in keeping these mispellings around.

Tinker, I agree.  Children and teens are horrible spellers these days because they don't practice.  They use acronyms for everything.  I've started seeing it in company e-mail too.  How unprofessional is that?

I guess teachers are having a hard time getting the kids to not use them in school papers as well.  these kids can't even figure out how to write a correct paper now?!?!  WTF?

I'm 17, and even I hate it! I use some acronyms (lol, ltmq, brb), but I cannot stand using "u" or "y" or even not capitalizing some things... uggggh

Seriously, though, guys, it's SCARY!  There was a story about it on Good Morning America or something a while ago.  Apparently teenagers are starting to get away with things more and more because their parents can look at their IM or email and have no idea what they're talking about.
