Am i active enough to lose weight?

Quote  |  Reply

I am only 29 but have an artificial hip, so i really can only do low impact exercise, and do not have full movement in my left hip, although i don't have much of pain. I have lost 30 pounds over the last 8 months (45 to go) and am looking to step up my weight-loss. My diet is good; veggies, fruits, nuts, whole grans, lean meats, but my question is about my exercise.

The following is my daily workout plan:

  • 30 minutes / 2 miles cardio on the elliptical.
  • 20 minutes strength training using stability ball, band & light weights

(I recently bumped the elliptical up to 30 min from 20, and am new to the stability ball.)

Anyway i feel great after my workouts, and they really push me to my limits, i am wondering if i am doing enough.

Thanks for any input!!

Only you can determine what is enough for your own body. Anything is better than nothing. Evaluate results and re-configure your workouts to meet your goals.

Very true, but there are certain levels that are recommended..."this much cardio a day, etc." Just wondering what other people find to be a good level activity for them to see a loss.

you lose when you burn more than you eat. count you calories, eat less than you burn, and you will be fine. even with very low impact exercise

Because you are incorporating strength training into your routine, you will most likely see good, pretty consistent results if you are consistent all around with your eating and level of activity.

I can somewhat relate to your limitations, as my knees no longer let me trail run (which I love) or do anything else that will impact them. I now lift and do HIIT with a jump-rope (a fraction of the impact on knees as you lift yourself maybe 1" off the ground, but super challenging cardio-wise) 3 days per week, as well as hula-hoop for 45-60 minutes as many days per week as I can find the time. It's only been 2 weeks of this routine, but I'm already seeing results. :-)

So keep it up, and you're sure to see results. Good luck!

tattooed_kitty- What does your HIIT workout with the jump-rope look like? That sounds rather intriguing! Especially since you can do it outside and not at a gym!
