I actually WANT to weigh what I weigh...Weird.
I am in a new position. As of this morning I actually weigh what I want to weigh. I am 19 years old, 5'4" and 119 pounds. I am very very pleased with my body at this weight. I feel thin, but in a healthy way.
My question is, how do I maintain this weight? It sounds dumb but I am so used to dieting and trying to always have a deficit, or when I was recovering from my ED, always eating above my burn level.
So how do i keep my motivation up to keep eating right and not slip into unhealthy habits at this weight? How much should I eat to maintain? I am pretty active. Is it okay to keep a slight deficit just to be safe, like 50-100 calories? Or is that a bad idea? THanks!
Maintaining takes practice and a little trial and error. I think it's important to set some new targets and it helps if they are not solely to do with body-weight. After all, the ultimate goal is to have a lifetime at a healthy weight.... not gaining/losing and then having to correct the damage. So with that in mind.
- Getting into a good healthy eating routine/habit. Regular meals, healthier choices and yet still being able to enjoy the occasional 'not quite so healthy treat' at the same time.
- Getting into a good habit of regular activity.... not over-exercising to compensate for extra calories, but enjoying a feeling of wellbeing.
- Not being too hung up with the calories.... There has to be a day when you stop calorie-counting and be able to trust that your food choices, portion-control and exercise routine will keep you at a healthy weight. So deliberately have days where you don't count calories so that you can practice how that feels. The rest of the time have a calorie range to aim for rather than one single number that you undercut. Chronic undereating makes weight-gain much more likely..
- Not being too hung up with one particular body-weight. Set some acceptable parameters... say 117 - 123lbs ... and be happy if you're within that zone. Having some flexibility means you're not panicking and 'dieting' the minute you gain a pound..
- Bring more variety into your diet... This may not apply to you but some people make their diet too restrictive in terms of food choices rather than calories.... They have too many 'safe' foods. A varied diet is healthier and tends to be more enjoyable and sustainable.
Good luck
