So, I know I often preach that it's not worth worrying about the sugars and fats and all sorts when you're gaining, but I am a little concerned for my sugar intake, if I may be honest. There is a history of diabetes in my family and I don't quite want to put myself at risk up there with them, gaining weight or no. But a lot of my sugars are from fruits and natural sources. Very little is added in. The thing is, I eat a LOT of fruit. I eat honey somewhat regularly too. I've heard all sorts of mixed messages, that you should only count added sugars (as in, not from a natural source). Is this true? Am I just being a worrywart? >__<; Sorry guys, it's been on my mind all of today!

in my opinion, natural sugars are fine.. as long as you're getting enough of every other nutrient you need. if you're still worried about it, maybe you could switch some fruit for vegetables instead?

one thing i've learned from getting over my eating disorder is that everyday can't be perfect; somedays you'll have a little too much sugar, salt, fat or whatever in your diet, and you'll still be very much alive the next day. i now count calories, and i try to eat pretty healthy, but i don't count the rest.. it's too triggering for me.

in my opinion, if you think you can do it, maybe stop counting your sugar and stuff and just make sure you're getting enough calories? and if you don't want to stop, natural sugars shouldn't cause diabetes, so don't worry. congratulations and good luck with recovery.

Oh, god. I don't actually count it. I always look to get balance from all groups and aim not to count to the exact number - more estimation. f I let myself count any more than that I'd get way too meticulous.

It's more an observation of my diet and going, "Gosh, I eat a lot of fruit/honey." and then head-scratching over my family history. I've been more worried than usual lately because we're getting my dad to get a test done within the week and I'm getting nervy - about him and myself. But it is largely fruit and natural sugars I consume, and I simply wasn't sure. One hand, it's from good sources and not refined... the other, the sugar is sugar.

Blah. I think I'm getting too worried about this.

well how often do you eat honey, and how much honey do you eat? if you're only eating like a tbsp a day, you aren't doing any harm really. i've seen tons of people on this website who have a little something sweet everyday and they're fine.

i hope your dad is okay, and i'm sure you will be too! don't worry, be happy ;)

Honey, not every day, but when I do it's not usually over a tbsp. It's more fruit I eat a lot of. Still, thank you. :]

Despite popular belief you don't get diabetes from eating too much sugar.

I know it's not the only cause, but also know it contributes. Still, sorry if it came across that way x_x

The way I'd look at it is that if I was getting 2 or 3 pieces of fruit a day, plus maybe the occasional sweet food (slice of cake, piece of chocolate) or some honey in something, I would say that was a reasonably intake of sugar.  When I see people eating 4 or 5 pieces of fruit a day (including smoothies and juices etc.) that's when I think they're not getting a good balance.

On that note, what's the recommended intake for sugar? Actually, I know that there really isn't a "recommended amount" (at least from what I've seen) and that the less, the better, but is there a certain amount that people shouldn't go over?

It's recommended that you don't go over 40g of sugar daily.
