Addicted to Cereal!
So you know girls get around that time of the month. Where all we want to do is eat that one food that sounds just super yummy. Right? Last month was awful, all I wanted was a cookies 'n creme bar (sooo yummy but 220 calories a pop! plus fat and all that other delicious fat building goodness). Well this month it was cereal. I seriously ate 3-5 bowls of Special K Cinnamon Pecan cereal a day. Not even kidding.
And now that TTOTM is just about done with, I still am addicted to cold cereal. It's all I ever seem to want to eat!
I'm sure it could be worse and all I want are those yummy Cookies 'n Creme bars and eat 3-5 of THOSE a day, but is it completely awful that I eat a ton of cereal? I am still staying in my calorie limit and everything too.
Any ideas how I can stop eating so much cereal?
My husband is the cereal king. He can polish off a box - family sized in a day.
Cereal is THE food group. There are no others.
I have a theory that because cereal is mostly carbs your blood sugar crashes just an hour or so after eating cereal. It tasted good, was easy to make and you are hungry again. The instant fix is more cereal and the process repeats.
I suggest having a boiled egg or other high protein food the next time you crave cereal, The protein will help keep you fuller longer and so may help break that vicious cycle.
My theory was confirmed this past week on "the truth about food". This weeks episode was about being thin. One of the experiments they conducted was feeding 3 men of similar age, weight and fitness level meals of the same calorie content One man was given a high carb meal, one a high fat meal and one a high protein meal. After 2 hours the high carb guy was reporting being hungry and the high fat guy a little hungry. The high protein guy was not hungry at all.
After 4 hours they gave each man a snack and weighed the left overs. The high carb guy ate almost all of his snack. The high fat guy a little less and the high protein guy barely touched his snack.

I love cereal, its that or oatmeal for breakfast each morning, along with fruit. :P
It might be the crunchiness too. I read somewhere that crunchy food makes you feel happy.
Nothing wrong with cereal
...I do a combo sometimes 2 times a day to fill the gap..I start with 100% bran, add some rolled oats, rye and spelt flakes, chi seeds and maybe some berries...with whole milk...hmm great!! High nutreint value and high in fibre.
With any wieght program there are cravings and hungries ...I find the cereal is the perfect cure. My lady also does this when she hit that time of the month and has found bran, Rolled oats and granola breakfast cereal mix combo, as her favourite.
We are both doing well on our weight loss programs we started in Jan 09 and will be be finished very soon.
mmmm cereal. At home at the moment I have...4 different boxes of the stuff, plus jumbo oats, steel cut oats, wheat germ, oat bran and numerous types of nuts, seeds and dried fruit that I put in it!
Some days I think its totally acceptable to have it for multiple meals a day - I like having cold cereal with fruit and nut butter in it in the mornings, then a bowl of cocoa flavoured oatmeal with protein powder and raisins in after work/gym. Its the best food in the world!!!
I think the trick is to stick to the 'healthy' kinds though - or use the sugary kind only as a sprinkled topping over a portion of a different kind.
I, too, am a cereal addict!!! I think it's because I'm such a carb lover. Once I start eating cold cereal, though, I really can't stop...there's always a little bit of milk left, so I pour a little more cereal...then I need some more milk for the extra cereal...haha! I have trouble controlling myself.
I've found that oatmeal works best to quell my carb cravings. It takes more effort to make another bowl, and it's nice and filling, too. Add some cinnamon and pecans, and maybe it can rival your Special K...!
I'm with you... cereal rules. I get excited at night time, knowing the next morning I get to wake up and have my bowl of cereal for breakfast, it's even incentive to have an early night!
I've been eating oatmeal recently... with fresh berries like blackberry, raspberry and then some prunes (that melt with the heat of the hot oatmeal ohhh). Even better is to freeze all your berries, then defrost them, and add to the oatmeal coz the berry juices mingle with the oats and milk you put in there and it's so creamy and sweet and oaty. Heaven (:
That said, I ate 1500 calories worth of granola last week... an occasional treat of course, and yeah I got bloated and icky but it was so damn good sitting there with a massive bowl of it.
thank you so much for the advice! I am a carb addict, but I have been doing better... I've spread out my three bowls of cereal throughout the day rather than all at once! hahaha.
I'll try the oatmeal. I've never been a big fan of it because it always was just way mushy to me. But then again, I've never liked cold cereal until recently! Maybe my taste buds are changing, so I'll have to start experimenting with new foods. c:
&rosieblue: it would not surprise me if it's the crunchiness that makes me happy, I love crunchy foods.
