Adding In Calories?

Quote  |  Reply

So I am trying to add about 200-300 calories into my food intake, and I'm not quite sure where to start.  I have three meals, plus two snacks, but I usually end up with fewer calories than I should... in combination with me getting hungry at this point in my day, usually leads to binges. (mostly at night, but night = after 6 pm)

My typical day goes as follows: Upon waking: light yogurt smoothie (70 cal) or granola bar (120 cal). Breakfast (2 hours later): oatmeal w/ milk (~200 cal) snack: something starchy (crackers, etc) (100-200 cal) lunch: turkey sandwich, fruit, veggie (~500 cal), snack: almonds or something similar (100-200 cal) dinner: 2 starches, lean protein, fruit, 2 veggies (~600 cal).  This adds up to 1570-1820.  I know that an extra 250 calories doesn't seem like it'd be enough to stop me from binging, but its really that I get hungry, don't know what else to have, and it turns into a binge.

Any help is appreciated.

I would plan a little snack for after dinner.  It looks like the rest of your day is pretty evenly spaced as far as snacks and meals.  I would find a low-calorie snack that fills you up to help stop the binging.  If it is dessert you are craving, you could try Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches which are either 100 or 140 cal, I forget which.  An apple/ yogurt is another filling and healthy snack.  If you are trying to snack without the calories, try some sugar free jello.  You can eat as much of it as you want (like the whole pack if you are really hungry) for like 20 calories.  Hope that helps a little!
You might try a protein shake as that would be about the right amount of calories.  Plus, protein helps keep you full, so I would imagine you would be less likely to binge.  If you have a blender or a stick blender, throw some ice cubes in it when you blend it, and that will make you drink it slower.
Wow... and to think that I honestly didn't even think of a protein shake... any good recipes? I do indeed have a blender.
Honestly, I just mixe my protein powder with skim milk and ice cubes because it's cinnamon oatmeal flavored (ISS Whey Matrix.  Awesome!) and tastes like the millk after a bowl of Cinnamon Toast Crunch.  But I've heard lots of folks mixing in oatmeal, bananas, strawberries, flax seed oil, etc.  Hope this helps!

Something that works for me after years of failed experiments:  I eat something very small but high in fat and anti-oxidants.  It seems to trick my system into thinking I've had something really good.  I either try a square of the darkest chocolate I can find (5-10 g, 70% dark) and let it melt in my mouth, or (and this will sound strange) a teaspoon of olive oil.  Yes, they have fat, but both come with things that are really good for you.  If you feel a binge coming on, try it and make yourself wait 20 minutes before you think about eating anything else.

PS - I don't know what your circumstances are, but I am still obese at 219 lbs, but I'm down from 245 and am a classic overeater so I know from binges . . .

I am at almost 160 now... I was at 153 when I came to college a few weeks ago, so this is getting ridiculous.  However, I have a plan, and I am going to stick to it now... Wish me luck!
