Adjustable dumbells: Any suggestions?

I am looking at the Weider Tech and the Bowflex SelectTechs. Does anyone have any experience with these?

Do you have any others you can recommend?

Thanks for any replies.

I don't know what Weider Tech dumbells are, but if they are anything like the Bowflex SelectTechs say away.  From what I've seen of the SelectTechs you're basically paying 4 times the price of some standard adjustable dumbells and you're saving about 3 seconds when changing the weight, they also limit the amounts of weight you can use and have more moving parts to break.

My advice is to get a cheap set like these, you can buy more weight to add and they'll last you until you're old and gray.

Those go up to 40 pounds.....how much weight would the average person (and/or woman) usually lift?  When I worked with a trainer a while back she had me use 7.5 pounds to start (total beginner).  Is 40 enough for most people or should I expect to lift more than that (casually) at some point?

chaotickitty - I'd say that if you are a beginner, you can plan on not going past 40 lb dumbbells for a while.  But the ones that Sully linked to, you can get larger plates for when you do become able to lift more than 40 lbs, and also you can get barbells with adjustable plates.

I would definitely not waste my money on those fancy adjustable weight sets.  Just go to Dick's or Sports Authority and pick up any simple adjustable set they have and it won't cost a fortune like that name brand overpriced garbage.  Only thing you should look for is weights that have rubber coating or rubber edges.  The ones I bought are solid metal all around and without any rounded corners.  This makes it more difficult to grip, and dangerous if I'm doing an exercise where I need to quickly throw down the weight or lower it quickly.  A rubber edge or coating will make it a little easier and safer.  Other than that, I would say just go for any set in your local sporting goods store.  They are very helpful to have around and you can always buy extra weight plates if you manage to max out what you have.  And power to you if you can.

I looked at both...they just are too big (grip and overall) for me...I like the basic ones I use at the gym...would love to have something compact at home like these models, but they are huge (and expensive)!!!
