Advice on fat free foods.

Quote  |  Reply
So I generally find all fat free and diet foods to taste like crap. Anything with fake sugar or things like fake sour cream all taste bad to me. The only Fat free thing that I can stand is Fat Free Pringles. Can anyone list some foods that are fat free/diet that taste normal? Or is it just absolutely impossible to find something like that?

I agree. So.. work on eating lower fat foods. Instead of no-fat foods.
I find, for example, 2% milk cheese is FAR better (and acts far more normal) than fat free cheese.
Though, fat free ricotta's OK.

And anyways, fat isn't your enemy. Well, trans fats are. And Saturated fats aren't good for you, but Unsaturated Fats such as you get in Fish and Nuts are GOOD for you!
For the record, from my experience.

Losing Weight is NOT about eating Low-Fat. Or Low-Carb. Or anything SIMPLE like that.

It's about understanding how your body works.. how many calories you burn and WHY, how to up that, how to lower that (so you can avoid the pitfalls)

And it's about knowing what you eat and taking responsibility for it. It's about knowing how many calories you should eat (based on how many calories you burn) and the best food to eat to get those calories (which is not to say you should always eat the best food. As you point out, alot of no-fat food tastes like poo.)

Good luck to you!
Your response to fat free foods is similar to a long time meat eater having a boca burger for the first time. I think what you are expecting is to be able to eat the way you always have, but substituting those foods with fat free products. You are not going to be happy with the results, because they will not taste right. Try staying away from processed foods and substitute fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grain products and lean meats. By staying away from fat free processed foods and snacks, and turning to fruits and veggies which are naturally fat free, you will keep your fat intake low, while enjoying foods that have great flavor. It's better to just use the high fat stuff in moderation rather than substitute it with a poor imitation. Go ahead and use the real sour cream, just limit yourself to one tablespoon.

Good luck!
I had alot of trouble adapting to artificial sweetners, but eventually you do adapt and you will be able to eat them.

Stuff like fat-free cream cheese and sour cream take some getting used to as well.  I can eat the fat-free cream cheese only when it's in a recipe or with something else added to it... just plain on a piece of toast is gross.

I suggest avoiding all that processed food as much as you can and concentrate on eating healthy natural foods like veggies and fruit (natrually fat free!) and they taste great too.

P.S. What Hel said is also true, if you really hate the fake stuff don't eat it!  Just work them into your daily allowance for calories.
I agree with other people... unless you really like them, diet foods don't help anything. Its kind like if your are really craving a hamburger but deny yourself, you will jusr keep eating, but if you had just had the hambuger, you owuld have eaten taht and nothing else. Have some of what you crave, and if fat free doesn't quell the craving, have full fat, just watch the portion, as always.

good luck
Don't bother with the commercialised: "FAT FREE!" or "UNDER 5% FAT!" items which are on sale in supermarkets.

No, they may not have fat in them but they tend to be loaded with sugar so it is therefore converted from glucose to starch. They can contain colourings, preservatives and other types of E-numbers.

So they are just as bad for you, although they do technically tell the truth when they say "low in fat".

I don't even look at the stuff. I concentrate on predictably healthy food instead.

I like popcorn with Olivio spray instead of butter. I pop the corn in an air-pop popper (usually available at a thrift store near you). The Olivio really does have a good butter flavor. This is a very fine snack with nothing in the "bad" category whatsoever.

Fat-free yogurt is often quite good, but high on the calories if you don't get something made with sugar substitute.
We just got some Skinny Cow mint chocolate ice cream sandwiches and they are delicious!  140 calories per sandwich, so still a splurge, but a reasonable one, and I didn't think they tasted sub-standard at all.
Well some Fat Free foods are good, some are good but not like their similar fatted brothers and some of them stink.

Good (to my taste) FF cottage cheese Kraft FF Cesar FF Sour cream (Daisy, it even works in stroganoff)

Good but not right FF cream cheese (I like it but it's not cream cheese) FF Ricotta

Bad Kraft FF Blue cheese, in fact most Kraft FF dressings
