Advice about moving a MALM bed from IKEA please!

Quote  |  Reply
I've got a MALM bed frame that my mattress sits on. It's a pretty popular model from IKEA. Problem is I'm moving and I can't figure out how to dismantle it. Has anyone else got this bed frame and had to move it? It's got to come apart someway...

All I remember is that it was a real bitch to put together.

basically there are screws that are holding the bed together...i tried to look in my bed to find them but i cant lift the mattress so i cant tell you exactly where they are (educated guess is that they would be near the corners of the bed).  when you find the screws all you have to do is loosen them and the bed should come apart.  you might need that L-shaped screwdriver thingy thing that came with the package.
Do I have to take out that metal bar down the middle first?

There is a list of the assembly instructions for all ikea products. Just skip to M and it's there.

I think that should work better.

And I think you have to take the slats off before you take the metal bar off.

Urgh. I hate that CC does this. You have to take the space out from between service /assembly for it to work.

Hm, I couldn't use that link. But I have taken the slats off, that's the easy part. Guess I'll go over with the tool box and get to work. I should have googled it in the first place. Someone said they've moved their bed 6 times so it can't be that hard :)
Thanks you guys. It's all moved. I just needed a bit of confidence, google, and a kick up the arse. Cheers!!

sorry i couldn't be here quicker, i've had to move my malm bed a few times.  You probably wound up doing it like this.

First an electric screwdriver/drill with an attachment will make everything 1000000 times easier.  I just unscrew the thin bars that connect the middle to the edge and then lift the middle bar out.  The ends come off pretty easily to say the truth but you've got to remove the tracks on the sides to easily unscrew them.  That is the only hard part.

I wonder how many folks at CC has a Malm bed?  We've got the birch one!
