i'm visiting NYC for the first time next week and am interested in any advice, suggestions, ideas. I kinda want to do non-touristy stuff, see neighborhoods, experience nightlife and so on. Any input would be appreciated!

i'm sure this is not the kind of tip you want---but the best cheesecake in the country is at the carnegie deli. and one of their corned beef sandwiches can feed a small family. of course, some people think junior's in brooklyn is the best. you may have to try both, and then decide. . . . .
non-touristy stuff, hmmmmm, i guess that would mean getting a 200 square foot apartment on the fifth floor with no elevator. lol
another thing you could do is go and visit the founders of calorie count, erik and igor, and tell them what an amazing thing they have done with this website!!
whatever you do, have fun. it's an amazing city!

Hi. If you want to do NON-TOURIST stuff stay awy from New York City. It's all about tourists and sight seeeing over there.
Go to Long Island. It's abs. beautiful out there. They have historic mansion, gorgeous gardens, nice huge malls and great resturants.
If you need any other help in finding specific places, send me a message. :)

Is there any chance you can be there for the calorie-count meetup? See the post here in the lounge!!!
thanks for the input, i may have to ignore the cheesecake suggestion! =)
i'll be there 5/7 thru 5/9 so no to the cc meetup. Are there meetups in other cities?
Well definitely stay away from Times Square if you don't want touristy. You'll be there for Cinco de Mayo so let me know if you want mexican restaurant suggestions.
Definitely walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. Its supposed to be in the 60s this weekend and sunny but bring a jacket, it may be windy. Or take the subway across and then walk back so you get the city views. This is one of the best things to do and its good exercise!
If you have time, you can take the Staten Island Ferry and ride by the Statute of Liberty. Skip Ellis Island, etc. unless you have a real interest.
Most of all, walk walk walk. Everyone in NY walks everywhere...not sure what your interests are but you can pretty much pick any neighborhood and just walk around. When I lived in the City I loved just taking the bus everywhere (except at rush hour LOL) - only 2 bucks and you can just look out the window at everything! A lot slower than the subway though obviously.
Where are you staying? What kind of nightlife are you into?

ckfior,
we're staying at the wolcott (31st st. and 5th ave); this is for my 30th birthday so i'm more interested in nightlife, bars that have live music, maybe an art scene. i want to eat some famous new york pizza, and get a feel for neighborhoods. And of course, i want to avoid being scammed or robbed.
