Advice for newlyweds

Quote  |  Reply

I'm getting married in March, and we both really want this to work. All the signs are that it should: we've been dating for ages (6 years) and are still very happy together, we've survived tough times, our families like our choice of partner, there's never been any divorce in our immediate family (not even uncles and aunts). When we make those promises 'til death do us part', we mean it.

So, what advice do people have for us when we're newly married? How do we get used to living together, sharing finances, working out disagreements, dealing with families, and anything else that might come up? What strategies have worked for you?

The best advice I ever got was from my sister, who has been married for 25 or 26 years-- sometimes your husband will really gross you out, and you may feel like you can't stand him.  This will pass.  And he feels the same way about you sometimes, too.  The key is not to let it show.

Definitely share a bank account.  My first husband and I had separate bank accounts, and that was just not a good way to establish a partnership.

You can read Dr. Laura's book The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands.  I re-read it at least once a year.

Best to you!

The best advise I can give is to communicate.  Literally talk to one another about all things in life.  Your marriage can then be built on a friendship a partnership.  Congrats on the up and coming wedding.  May there be many blessings in your future.

Communication, communication, communication! Be supportive, honest and loving, even when you don't feel like it.

Dr. Laura can be harsh at times, but she has a LOT of valuable information when it comes to relationships and marriage. "The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands" is one such book where she shares her wisdom. I got a lot out of it and I'm sure you can too.

Congratulations! :)
