Advice on sushi please!

Quote  |  Reply

I can't leave my desk during the day so we get lunch ordered in -  or somebody goes and picks it up.  Today is sushi day.......... which I LOVE!

What are some of the best things to eat that are low cal?

I will have sashimi for sure... but god its going to be so hard to resist the rolls.

even the rolls arent too bad-- get the styles that are more japenese, less american.  none of the spicy tuna or salmon (the sauce is made with mayo) but even if you do, 6 pieces is about 400 cal.  nothing with tempura obviously.  im not sure how high in cal the bbq eel is, good as it is, i think its high b/c of the type of fish and the sauce.  california rolls tend to be high too b/c of mayo and/or avocado.

is the place you get from really good?  then get pure tuna, salmon, or other fish that is delightful fresh.  a little ginger and yum! im so jealous....

I got:

Tuna & Salmon Sashimi (4 pieces each)

Edemame

Miso Soup

:)

Shockingly feel satisfied... I would have thought I'd be hungry - so used to having 2 large rolls!

This website helps me a lot

I usually get 4 pieces of assorted sashimi, a 1/2 cup of brown rice, and a miso soup. Or I get a salmon roll and a miso soup. Either way I'm full and it's yummy - plus I get to eat out and not feel guilty at all about it!

Check out kimbap... it's a Korean "sushi". It comes with pickled radish and some other veggies and ham or tuna (not raw tuna). There's no sauce but it's delicious and lower cal than most sushis. It's easy to make at home as well.

My advice on sushi? EAT IT!! I love it.. And same thing with sushi as anything else.. Enjoy it in moderation. A lot of sushi (especially sashimi) is good for you.. Sashimi being JUST the fish itself (sometime served over a small portion of rice).

However, sushi rolls are not bad for you! Yes if you get a ton of mayo or other sauces douched in them, of course they aren't going to be the best choice..

I myself start with the soup which comes with spinach leaves and tofu... then will get some kind of roll(a roll with crab meat/shrimp/cucumber/and sprouts wrapped in seaweed and rice) and will use the "lite soy sauce"... it's delicious! I love it..

Sushi is very healthy...lots of omega 3 fatty acids and such.  I usually save it for a treat, since it's expensive.  I actually had sushi last night and in efforts to keep my sodium down I skipped the soy sauce and just ate it with wasabi and ginger.  But I was SO bummed to find out how much sodium is in seaweed salad.  It's ok calorie-wise, but it had almost 2,000 mg of salt!

I usually get a sashimi salad. It is a great way to get your greens and omega 3s. Talking about low-cal options for sushi rolls: I go with plain fish (tuna, salmon, yellow tail).

In defense of BBQ eel. It is not too bad - but if you are watching sodium, no Japanese dish is good for you, since the cuisine is high-sodium, low-fat.

I would try to avoid rolls when on a strict diet because of rice in it. At least I (and I would have sushi for b-fast, lunch and dinner) tend to gain whenever I eat the rolls.

I love sushi! My fiance and I usually split three different rolls, and one roll is always a specialty that is tempura, loaded with fish, cream cheese and all the sauces. But I don't care, because it's a treat.

i'm good with 12 pcs of sashimi edema mi and hot green tea....

not a big roll eater or sushi eater just give me lots of wasabi with my yellow tail ,tuna and salmon.... mix in some roe..and there you have  it...

My sushi advice? Don't eat all the rice. I usually leave behind on my plate a small pile of white rice at the end. Stay away from anything with "crunchy" in the name. Crunchy=deep fried. Fill up on a small bowl of edamame or miso first. And watch those mayo laden sauces! Other than that, enjoy!

I'm so jealous! Sushi is by far my favorite food and hubby and I only get it every couple of months. (It can be so expensive!)

Another great option at sushi places is the seaweed salad. It's SO yummy and really low in cals.

I love sushi! My bf and I go to a revolving sushi bar all the time. It's great because there's only a couple pieces per plate, so I can eat a lot of different types of sushi without eating a lot of sushi.

Of the nigiri sushi I eat, the ebi (shrimp) has the least calories. I guessed it to be about 35 cal. per piece. But tamago isn't that bad either (about 60 per piece).

Of course these are just my guesses based on the sushi rice and how much of whatever it looks like there is, so I wouldn't be surprised if I'm off by a bit.

I used to scoff at grocery store sushi until we moved to Buffalo, the land of deep fried wings, beer, pizza and melted cheese as a standard topping on everything. Since the nearest good sushi place is 30 minutes downtown and only take-out, I actually tried Wegmans sushi one day.  My wife & I get it maybe once a month now.  Anyway, wegmans offers some nigiri sushi with brown rice so that's a nice option.   I typically get tuna / salmon / shrimp nigiri.  Biggest problem is my love of soy sauce and all the sodium that comes with it. Expect to retain some water weight.  On travel, I'll typically get some kind of sashimi & chicken combo with the steamed rice on the side.

I miss working within 5 miles of a Japanese hibachi / sushi place and a Chipotles.
