Advice on this workout plan.....

Quote  |  Reply

I am hitting the gym (again) next week and need advice on my plan.    I have got to get into working out again.   Since the gym near my house closed and I have to go further to get to workout I haven't been going.  It's really bad.  So, anyway, this is what I am thinking:

  • Sunday - Pilates class; 30 minutes elliptical; 15 minutes treadmill
  • Monday - 30 minutes elliptical; 15 minutes treadmill;  arms (various weight machines)
  • Tuesday - 30 minutes elliptical; 15 minutes treadmill;  legs (various weight machines); abs
  • Wednesday - OFF
  • Thursday - 30 minutes elliptical; 15 minutes treadmill;  arms (various weight machines)
  • Friday - 30 minutes elliptical; 15 minutes treadmill;  legs (various weight machines); abs
  • Saturday - OFF

Keep in mind that my main goal is to LOSE WEIGHT.   So, what does everyone think of this gym workout plan?  Any advice.

You should add some of the torso exercises with weights.  They really help trim down the waist line.  You'll also want to add your back, too at some point.

It's a good plan, a lot of cardio will definitely shed pounds fast.

As for the four weight lifting sessions, I'd suggest throwing a day for some back and chest exercises.  The movements associated with those muscle groups also simultaneously train the triceps and biceps.

Actually, weight lifting will burn fat more efficiently than cardio.  It seems as though your adding weights to your cardio program.  It should be the other way around.  If you run short on time and can only do one or the other - choose to lift, and lift heavy.

Thanks everyone.   Sounds like the majority are saying to keep up the cardio.  I did it today - now I just have to stick with it!    I am trying to cut down/out sugar and right now I am dying.  I am totally addicted to sugar and I have to kick it somehow.

What's is physiologically correct is not subject to a majority vote though - see the new Melkor Geeks Out: add your favourite study! post for more than you'd even want to know about it. Lifting weights and controlling your diet gives you fantastic results, while cardio is relatively useless when it comes to fat loss. It's good for you from a health perspective though so don't ditch it entirely, but as Geminspector says, if you've only got time for one, do the lifting.

And ditch the machines - free weights mean less pain, more gain for anyone who isn't in need of physical theraphy.
