At what age does a girl's bust and hips stop growing?

Quote  |  Reply

I'm 15 and I'm really happy with my current measurements (I'm 5'7 and 30.5-24.5-30.5), but I'm soo scared my hips will widen even if I don't put on weight. At what age does a girl's bust and hips stop growing?

Boobs: about 18, maybe a little before or after depending on the person

Hips: never, sorry, they need to grow to produce babies.  But they don't really "widen" per se. They almost always stay in proportion with your body and you seem to be thin so they most likely won't get very "wide"

I believe your breasts stop growing shortly after menstruation starts.  But I could be wrong.

Eh, I had another growth spurt in my mid-twenties. Hip and boobs - I had been less than an a-cup my whole life and suddenly moved in between an a and b-cup. No real fat gain, either - I had been exercising for the first time in my life. My proportions have never changed; my hips have always been 1-2 inches bigger then my bust.

Why are you scared? It doesn't help to fear the inevitable, dude. You'll only give yourself palpataions over nothing.

I'd say into early 20's is when it stops.

Your hips will most likely stop growing when the rest of your bones stop growing. So, if you're still getting taller, your pelvis will most likely get wider. Throughout your life, you can still put on or take off muscle and fat there though.

The bust is different, since it is soft tissue. Pregnancy will generally make your breasts bigger, and while some of that gain is temporary, some may remain even after you give birth or stop nursing. Also, I have found that my chest has continued growing in my mid 20s - not the band size, just the cup. I have had friends with similar experiences too.

Ultimately, there is no reason to worry about it, since it is just a part of growing up. I remember from a previous thread that you have a history of disordered eating. If you find that you are genuinely scared of developing a woman's figure, please talk to a professional who has some experience with eating disorders!

My observation has been that females tend to continue developing their adult bodies until around the age of 25.

Hmm.

At 15, you really don't need to be worrying about such things. No offense, but I looked at your other posts. You have an eating disorder, and that is quite obviously where your worries are stemming from.

I let my fears about that sort of thing stop me from ever really recovering for the past....nearly ten years now. I died in my sleep when I was 16 years old. I almost died again last summer. I am about to be 21. I haven't been able to celebrate a birthday since I was 15. I lost a great deal of my life because I was afraid of what? Something that never came. Please do yourself a favor and get some help - talk to you family, a therapist - something. Don't let anorexia ruin your life, or worse.

The transition from child to adult doesn't complete until your early twenties.   And even after that, women's bodies carry on changing due to the ageing process, menstruation, pregnancy and all the other wonderful things that go with being female.

You're going to end up with a different body three, five or ten years from now and that's a guaranteed fact of life.  But you can't function normally if you're afraid of growing up.  Do talk to someone about your anxieties.

I'm surprised you would worry about wide hips. The only problem with them is to find pants that really fit. But this problem is quite small considering that wide hips (especially in combination with generous boobage) give you an "evolutionary advantage" by attracting the attention of guys. Plus, they make your waist appear smaller :D

So, if you're growing into a "pear" shape, you are lucky =)

the best figure is the hourglass one.that sounds kind of wrong but what i mean to say is that if you are blessed with one you can wear pretty much any style of clothes that you like.i am a pear myself and always struggle with finding clothes that balance my small boobs with my large hips.well..the advantage for pear-shaped women is that the fat is deposited away from the heart, which is great.anyway,no use fighting nature.we are what we are and we should make the best of it come what may.sorry if my english is all over the place,i'm very tired right now.

:sigh: If this girl has an eating disorder - unfortunately she will do whatever she can to prevent her proportions from changing. Its something she should be dealing with in therapy. Telling her things like "pear shape is great!" won't eliminate her fears. Fact is - with her measurements she is probably quite underweight (they are almost the same as mine and I am minimum 15lbs away from being a normal body weight for 5'8.5" and 21) and really should just be focusing on getting healthy instead of obsessing over whether or not her hips have gotten too big. OP - you could gain another 2-5" all over and still be considered very very petite. I really hope you are getting help now, instead of waiting until you plummet further into what seems to at least be the beginnings of anorexia if its not already full-blown.
