Hi 45-50 folks,

I just signed on yesterday and I'm looking for people like me... trying to lose weight in a 50 year old body which wants to keep it.

I have two teens, a son 17 and a daughter 15. My husband and I have been married almost 24 years (end of this month). I also have two horses (pets), two dogs, and an orphaned barn mouse. I live in Southern Maine in the country and I'm originally from Central NY. I've struggled with weight since puberty, so I know a lot about nutrition but have a hard time putting the knowledge to good use. After my kids were born, I gained 50 pounds net and it got a LOT harder to lose. I gave up for a while and now I'm 5'2" and weigh 191 pounds. I sit at a computer all day doing digital imaging (Photoshop) at our business (photography-not people, things and food, of course). Web site is www.stretchstudio.com if you're curious. I've got some health issues which also make losing weight harder but this post is already too long.

I'm hoping to lose 60 pounds by next summer... long term goal is a life style change. My kids and husband don't want to eat the way I do so I've cut them loose and they can cook for themselves. I've learned to hate cooking, and time is a big problem, so I'm eating a lot of tv dinners (easy to get the cals per serving) and Isagenix Shakes for breakfast. I've actually been doing the shakes for a long time and I really like them... satisfying and taste good (I sound like a commercial) and NO I'm not selling anything.

I started eating better when we got home from Arizona on April 28th. Since then I've lost 3 pounds total. I hope this web site will help me stay on track.

Thanks for being there

Jenny

PS: The puppy in my photo is 13 years old so don't be fooled... I don't look that good... I just love that photo.

I was so excited when I saw the thread for this group I just plunged right in and read posts after.  You are all so supportive of each other and have been through a lot "together" and been there for each other.  It's a privilege to read your caring words. Thank you.

Hiya Jenny...nice to welcome you to the thread!!!!

You've got an orphaned barn mouse.......ahhhhhhhhh....I love it, what's his/her name (sorry, getting all slushy now!)

You're right about the group being so supportive.  I've been really nervous before getting to know people about saying stuff but shouldn't have been cos they're all real nice/caring.

Well, its am in Britain, sunny for the forth day in a row.  I just posted elsewhere on CC that I can't get over it.  Britain....sunny.....good grief, what shall I do???????????Laughing

Thanks for the welcome!

The mouse's name is Widget. She's a deer mouse. I found her in my barn last October all huddled with her eyes not even open. I think she fell out of her nest so I don't think she's technically an orphan. She's a contained mouse now. I sometimes think of letting her go in the barn but I can't bring myself to do it. She's so cute!

I spent a semester in London for college eons ago. It was cloudy but being from Central NY I knew about cloudy. Then it SNOWED in December. Being from Central NY state, I also knew a lot about snow. It was funny, and a bit hair-raising, to see the British drivers trying to stop... I'd yell at them to pump their brakes but they didn't know about that... I was probably using the wrong word. Like a flashlight is a torch and a truck is a lorry. You guys sure talk funny!

Enjoy the sun! I'm going out now to move some of the horse product my gardening neighbors value so highly. So I'll be giving out s*** this afternoon!

Hi to our new friends: mgtsmpsn (whew that's hard to type) and jennytu! And, of course, a big hello to all the regulars.

Hey - something weird just happened to me. I have been posting my Monday weigh-ins on another thread (I know, I feel like I've been unfaithful to you girls going on another post)Wink hee-hee; but anyway, I had made a comment on something someone had posted, and she misinterpreted it, and wrote back a negative response to me. I only go on that thread on Mondays, so it's been sitting there all week with no response from me. I just happened to check it today. So, I just wrote a long-winded apology to her trying to explain that I didn't mean anything bad, it just came across to her the wrong way. But, geez, now I feel bad about that.

Any thoughts? Sue

Even though I am new here I'll wade in...

I am the world champion of thinking I've hurt someone's feelings or made them mad, even if they don't say anything! So the way I try to stop myself is I ask myself if I did it on purpose... no... and have I done whatever I need to do to make it up to them... yes (checked with them, apologized, or whatever)... and then I work on letting it go.

Just like I told my kids when they were little. Say you step on someone's foot by accident... you say sorry... and if you've broken their foot you take them to the hospital and hope they have health insurance. And if you did it on purpose then you get a time out!

Apparently you "stepped" on this person's "foot." You didn't mean to, so no time out, and you said sorry. That seems like enough to me!

Hi guys-
Sorry to ask a question (food you like cause I'm tired of my ideas) then go running off for a couple of days.  It has been very hectic to say the least.   I have four outside mares in for breeding and they all decided to come into heat at once, so it has been a wild time here in VT.

Thanks Alylou / Connie for the food suggestions.  They definitely helped touch off my creative juices!!
And Connie (our little cleaning maniac! <G>), so sorry to hear about the cyst; but I hope you are almost pain free now.

Sophcesca - good to see you back on this thread too and happy you are "back in the saddle" so to speak!!

New pictures --  Very, very nice.  You should be very proud of yourselves.

Howdy to our newcomers.
Mgtsmpsn -- golly what can we call you for short?  How about MG?  We can think of you as a little sports car.  At any rate welcome, welcome.  Food suggestions -- stuff the frig with a wide variety of fresh veggies and fruits.  I think the "crunch factor" of chewing on fresh veggies can be pretty satisfying as you transition over to your new eating habits and the sweetness of fruit can replace some of the higher caloric *sweet* choices you may crave.

And of course welcome to you as well Jennytu.   I was born in Ithaca when my dad was at Cornell... so I guess I can say I was originally a central NYer.   I am in VT now, so sorta halfway between where you came from and where you are now.  We also have horses (too many!), a couple of rescue Dobes and a guinea pig the kids name Bowser (pre-dog era in our family).  Sounds like you are mentally and physically on your way to a *new you*.  Welcome to the gang.

Sue - ugh, misinterpretations are so easy to happen when our thoughts get spelled out in little written snippets. Jenny is right.  You sent an apology off and now you can let it go.  From here on out it is in the lap of the other party and it is now their turn to let it go or send you a note to ask for further clarification.  What would Beth Moore say? <G>  .. probably 'nuff said there.  At any rate, let your spirit be light - you have done what you can.

I am turning in shortly.  A very happy Mothers Day to all you mothers out there.  Chat with you soon.
Cheers,
skn

GOOD MORNING AND HAPPY MOTHERS DAY TO YOU ALL!!!! Hello and welcome to MG and Jennytu. I know you will enjoy this forum cause we talk about everything... fuss, moan and groan over lbs and laugh a whole lot at ourselves and eachother!!!Wink Skn thanks for the concern about the cyst it is almost gone with the zillion antibiotics and I am feeling much better. I did finally finish my kitchen yesterday. I wrote all the housecleaning in as exercise on my nutrisystem site. (I no longer use nutrisystem but use the site to record all my food and exercise and weight etc. It's a very convienient set up. Anyway with all of that work it calculated that i burned around 600 calories.....I am way too sore it had to be at least 3000!!Cry LOL   Ok Sue just what were you doing on another forum????huh???? No just kidding. Like everyone said you have explained yourself and so I just wouldn't worry over it anymore. You didn't say (i don't think) if you got a response after explaining yourself??!! Did the person realize you meant( whatever it was) in a different way? ANYWAY you need to stick with us WE are the understanding caring and umm sarcastic group you know and love!Innocent Jennytu I wouldn't be able to part with Widget either. My cats do not allow me to have other pets (although I bet they would love Widget!)but you know just hearing that u rescued a little mouse tells me you are a very good person! Mg after joining this group you can no longer say you don't have any friends! This site/forum has actually helped me lose just by the chats and motivation everyone sends out to you. If you mess up everyone helps you not beat yourself up about it. If you lose even a dot of weight you get a GOLD STAR!  Gosh the last few reply's have been a NOVEL sorry guys! Have a great relaxing mom's day....(you know not one of my 5 catchildren even made me breakfast in bed sent a card nothing) Kids .....oh well !!!! LOLCool

As soon as I find a cat that can take pictures of me I will post them!!!  lol   Seriously I will get some pictures up soon. I know u are all wanting to see who the crazy catwoman is and what she looks like!!!!      ConnieKiss

Hi All and Happy Mother's Day to Cat Moms and everyone!

Connie-Yes I'm sure the cats would love Widget. How many calories in a mouse? One of our dogs is just fascinated with Widget and will stand with his paws on a chair looking for her whining and fussing and usually she's alseep in her nest. We all thought "How cute!" until one day, mouth open, he lunged at her. Lucky there was a clear plastic wall between them! He's now obsessed with mice and will search all around the yard, barn, basement, etc looking for mice. Once I found him staked out by the round hole for our central vacuum! He's a nut.

skn-I am right there with you having 2 picky teens, one thin and one not interested in losing my way, and a husband who can pretty much eat whatever he wants. I don't cook anymore for a whole variety of reasons so I've found some really good frozen foods from Amy's from the health food store I use. Doesn't sound like something you would use though. That portobello mushroom you mentioned sounds great! I wish I had time to make stuff like that and a family who would eat it

So today will be a difficult day for me. I'm home but I have computer work to do for tomorrow (self employment is not as great as it sounds). It's boring and I get food urges when I'm bored. Usually I try to manage with drinks at hand so I don't get up and go to the kitchen.

I'll go get some tea now... I feel an urge and I've not even started the work yet!

Cheers, Jenny

New to CC  and I interested in joining the group but I am 52 yrs old.  Can I still join?  I do not see another group older than this one.

My name is Sandy live in Colorado 5 children youngest is 19yrs old.  I am 4'10" tall and weigh 139 lbs.  I have been trying to lose weight for a long time.  I am exercising 5 days a week around 45 mins. but still not able to lose any weight.

For the first time yesterday I put in the amount of foods that I ate and to my surprise or denial I have been overeating.

Can anyone tell me how they are preparing the menu's for the week in order to keep under 1200 cal/day. I am stumped in how to proceed.

Happy Mothers Day to you all!!

Wow! I take a day or so off to get busy with my family and all sorts of stuff happens around here!Surprised

First, WELCOME mg, Sandy, and Jenny! we have plenty of room for more *schooches over* !Laughing

Jenny, all those animals! they sound adorable. It takes a special person to love so many. I have to satisfy myself with 3 fish tanks (2 freshwater at school, and a BIG salt water at home) and my best friend Max a 13 yo Westy and his buddy Aberdeen a 4 yo Westy.

mg, I hear the frustration you have, it is hard to diet when the stores are limited. (lived for 5 years in a small town in Texas, stores drove me crazy). I agree with skin, fresh veggies are a big resource for you, stock up, get them clean and cut up then keep them in the fridge for every time you are tired and hungry. As I was getting started I made a GIANT pot of the old WW veggie soup which has very few calories to log and ate it every time I got hungry. It is a very easy an VERY adaptable recipe-I put in whatever veggies I have-you might give that a try: (be sure to use as fat free a broth as you can buy)

Sandy...hang on...

* all in favor of waiving the age rule, be silent...any against..speak up...No? well then motion carries, age rule waived for Sandy.*Wink

HI Sandy, and welcome! I am not a good planner, and since I know this about myself I just make sure when I shop that I only buy stuff that will help the dieting goal. I do gather lunch stuff that fits my limits and have them at school (I teach) so when lunch time comes I decide what sounds good. I eat the progresso light (120 calorie for the whole can) soups, mini bagels with laughing cow light cheese or humus, granola bar and yogurt, the JD sandwiches Connie talked about earlier, or just a big ole salad and spritzer.

To all, as Sandy brought up, logging every bite you eat is the key to shedding those pounds! As soon as you get into the swing of keeping track of your intake the weight becomes a surmountable hurdle! You CAN do it. *end pep talk*

Sue, I HATE it when someone is angry with me! but really what we are doing is taking their issues and making them our own. If someone gets ticked at you when you meant well, that is THEIR problem. (I say this, but I have to really work at it myself!)Frown

Alison-send some sun! I planted flowers like crazy yesterday (prom photos were at my house Surprised) and I had to wear a heavy jacket! grrr

Connie, well you didn't show up in time, so I had to clean it myself!Yell and shame on your kitties!

Skin, so you abandoned us for a wild time of ...ahem..."breeding"! Wink I agree with, I think it was Connie, who pointed out we need an emoticon of a devil!

Soph, hello your way too!

Well you wonderful bunch of ladies, have a terrific Mother's Day!

EDIT: Holy Cow this is long!

Ok I have just added 4 of you"NEWBIES" to my friends list so You are definitely in the group now!!!!!! We are really growing people!!! I cant remember which one of you new ones has a birthday in June but mine is as well! me? the 26th!

Hope everyone had a nice Mothers Day!

Sandy don't worry about the age because I got in with ONLY cat children!!!

Aly sorry I didn't get to the house cleaning but as you read I was busy burning 600 calories!Yell I still know it was at least 3000!Kiss

Alison really send some sun to N.C. too! We have had strong winds and alot of rain! Speaking of rain.....

Where is our Veganmamma!? You know I gain weight when one of you skips a day!!!!! GUILT????!!!!!!!!!

Jennytu....we all wanna know....HOW IS WIDGET this a.m.!

Sue give me a silver star I stayed away from the Pina coladas....yea!!!! Um why a silver and not a GOLD.....I had a rum and diet coke! BUT THAT'S ALL!

Soph did the three weeks of fun ever catch up with you! All it takes for me is one weekend!!!!!! Two days later I realize "IT'S BAAACK"

MG Of course its up to you but I was looking back at some of what everyone wrote and you talked about starting slimfast....for me it was ok to replace a meal with it but otherwise i would always end up overeating in the long run 'cause i would get so hungry! One of my favorite/easy "filler uppers" is a salad with alot of lettuce cabbage carrots and then I add about a fourth cup of light red kidney beans 1/4 c garbonzo beans and then add either kraft free ranch or blue cheese or the spritzer dressings (they REALLY have low calories) and then top it with 5-6 melba toast rounds (as croutons). It's really filling and not bad calorie wise so.....just a suggestion for ya!Smile

Now I was trying to include everybody in our group on that one but from here will most likely just RAMBLE to everyone like always until another newbie heads our way!!!!!   Have a great day girls!Innocent        Connie

Connie-I didn't even see Widget yesterday or this AM but I know she's still there because her food was nibbled. She sleeps during the day and will come out to get a blueberry if I really roust her. She's a very busy girl and fast (Speedy Gonzales) so she won't let me hold her but she'll take food out of my hand. I have a clear plastic "cage" with a snap down door in the top so I reach down with the food in my cupped fingers. When spring really hit she tried several times to climb my hand to get out but she's settled down now. I don't let her out since she'd be gone in a flash. She's escaped twice and it was a miracle we got her back both times. I'll try to get a photo of her posted.

Who knew she'd be so popular!

Hi all, quicky post today. As soon as school is out i have to race across town for a mammogram (so looking forward to getting SQUISHED). Then a quick dinner with the family and off to a meeting. *sigh* oh where did my weekend go??? I want it back! I liked my weight better over the weekend too...not sure whats up, besides my weight! GRRR

Lovely Monday to you all!

Good Afternoon - all you great ladies -

Thanks for the supportive messages about my unintentional "mean-ness" on the other forum. I'm just gonna' save my comments for all of you from now on. LOL The person whom I offended did write back, but it didn't sound like she really believed me. But, like several of you have said, it's done - I apologized, and I never actually did anything wrong to apologize for anyways.

Welcome to our new friends - no age limits or other restrictions here (okay, maybe not a 21 year old with 2 pounds to lose so she can look smashing in her bikini). We're all in this together - the "thick and thin" of it!

I had a very nice Mothers' Day and hope all of you did as well, even our cat-mom. My children ordered me a beautiful silver bracelet; and dear husband paid for it. Plus, my husband returned from his scuba trip to Honduras, so it was nice to see him again. He was very sweet to me all day.  We went out for a great meal - I cheated a little - not too bad, but boy, oh, boy it was delicious just eating "regular" food and not worrying about it. And, I took a 2 hour - that's right TWO HOUR nap. Glorious.

Thank you for including me in.  I needed a support group like you all.  Alylou I will definitely look up the WW veggie soup.  I hope you all had a great time yesterday with your families.

Connie I did receive your email including me as a buddy.  Thanks, I replied by adding you also.  Have a great week girls. - Sandy

Sue-

Curiousity got the better of me and I had to look. So I snooped and found the message you posted which caused all the uproar. I gotta say, I didn't get what she did from your message. Not at all. I think her response to you was WAY over the top! And your apology was certainly sufficient if not more than was needed.

I also think it's weird that no one else commented and she didn't even acknowledge that you had said sorry.

If I were you I'd stay away from that thread... stay here... where it's safe

Jenny

Today in Arizona we have the most remarkable cool, breezy, cloudy weather. It's like a little gift. By Saturday we will be at or over 100 degrees - so I'm going to go out and walk and try to memorize this feeling of cool-ness to get me through the loooooong, hot summer.

I'm in a happy mood today, ladies, the scale is my friend this morning --- 25 pounds lostl! Smile

Jenny - thanks for checking my "misunderstood" message. I'm glad you confirmed what I thought; it didn't seem like I said anything wrong, but . . . oh well. I'm over it; I'll just stay here with all of you in our happy little forum. (The other poster did send me a private message saying she understood, but it would have been nice if she posted it for others to see, too.)

Sandy/webbgalarza - welcome.

I'm adding everyone new on this forum to my friends list; feel free to add me as a friend, if you want.

Bye for now - gotta' go soak up this cool weather. I know all of you think I'm crazy, (I might be) but you have to live through some AZ summers to know what I'm talking about.

Sue

Hello....I am new....44 years old...live in Bermuda.  Have one daughter (18) and she is currently at University in England.  Went to my GP for an annual check-up last Monday and was shocked into action when the scales read 204lbs!  I have been "big" (180-190's) for a while now, but that's the first time I had hit the 200's.  Not happy!!  5.5"tall, medium frame.....would love to think i could get down to 150, but have set a short term goal of 179!!!

My profile on CC said i should eat 1400 cals, burn meter is 1960.  However, I have been averaging 1100 (figured I am probably underestimating some foods a little and don't count the odd splash of milk in my tea.)  Weighed myself today and was 198lbs, thats 6lbs in 8 days.

I know the recommended loss is 2lbs week, but am I right in thinking I will lose quickly to begin with, then settle down a bit?
