Ah! This is driving me mad.

I don’t know why, but I get intense popcorn cravings. Or cereal. It’s really strange – it seems to me like I’m certainly eating enough. It makes me feel weird to eat at night – how can I overcome my popcorn addiction? Might it have something to do with the rest of my eating habits? (Which I posted below)

Is this a good diet for somebody who is 18, and 5’4? It’s hard to use the calorie counter because so much is homemade and not a product I can easily search for... I’m fairly active – I walked 2 miles today. I don't do that all the time, but I try to stretch and stuff daily.

Breakfast:

1 slice homemade multigrain bread with homemade strawberry jam

½ peach

Lunch:

½ sandwich with slice of chicken breast, roast beef, 1 slice cheese, lettuce and olives

½ chocolate chip muffin

Snack:

5-7 quakes by quaker oatmeal

Dinner:

1 cup homemade chicken noodle soup with a saltine, and sliver of fresh mozz.

½ slice bread with sliver of butter

2 beets, steamed

1 stalk celery

½ peach

Snack:

6 cups popcorn – oil popped, no butter

You're not eating enough, and it is mostly carbohydrate.

You need some fat and protein.  Especially fat.....I don't see any substantial fats.  That is probably a main reason for your cravings.  You're malnourished.

Try to add some healthy fats:  nuts, oils, nut butters, avocado, seeds, etc.

i agree, youre not eating enough, especially at your age but even in general.  you may feel like you crave what you beloive to be a lot of popcorn bc youre body is just hungry.  eat more during the day-a whole sandwich, a whole slice of bread, more protein also.

good luck

I would agree about the protein. I know it sounds weird to fight carb cravings by eating protein but it works for me like a charm.

No.

You aren't eating enough at all, to begin with. You are also not getting a good balance of food groups - what I see is large amount of carbohydrate. You're likely suffering immense cravings because you're depriving yourself of food, and that which you are eating would cause spikes in blood sugar. You need more proteins - lean meat, eggs, fish, and non-animal proteins such as legumes and pulses, and tofu - dairy, vegetables and fruit, and healthy fats - nuts and nut butters, avocado, olive oil and oily fish as examples. Aim for a protein, fat, and carb at EVERY meal, plus fruit or vegetable servings. Make up for other servings in snacks during the day.

An eighteen year old needs at least 1500 calories a day minimum and by what I can tell you'd barely even hitting near 1200. It is recommended to never go below 1200 calories if you are a female, 1500 if you are a female teenager or male, and 1800 if you are a teenage male. This is because your body will enter starvation mode. This is not the only side effect of undereating; you would be putting your body in horrible danger of things like low blood pressure, hair loss, anemia, heart problems and worse.

  • Dieting & Metabolism (explains starvation mode and why undereating is counter-productive)
  • The Body Neglected (explains what happens when you undereat a long time)

This is a breaking down of 1200 calories for a  5'2", 19 year old female weighing approximately 100 pounds, sitting around all day and doing nothing:

-The heart needs 12% of the calories (144 cals)
-The kidney needs 12% of the calories (144 cals)
-The Liver needs 23% of the calories (276 cals)
-The brain needs 23% of the calories (276 cals)
-The skeletal muscle needs 30% of the calories (360 cals)

As you are 5'4 and weigh more than 100lbs I can assure you you need a LOT more than what you are eating right now.

In your previous posts, you mention that you normally take in less than 1000 calories a day.  As lalabanana mentions above, you are not consuming enough calories in a day.  Especially since you mention that you are fairly active and walk 2 miles a day.

You mention that you are 5'4 and 18 years old but how much do you weigh?  Your weight has a lot to do with how many calories you will need in a day.  The more a person weighs, the more calories they burn naturally and will need to take in.

i just want to encourage you in your attempt to lose weight. one 'fat' that's good for you is avocado. i really like it with chicken or salads. also you could try tuna and a little mayo. for me, more protein keeps me from ever having serious cravings. good luck.
