Is this whole burn rate thing actually accurate? Allegedly i burn 1700 calories a and I always eat like 1200 a day, and yet it doesn't really seem to be helping. And if I do eat like 1500-1700 a day i feel HUGE. anyone have a similar issue?

What do you eat for your 1200 calories?

I was kind of in the same situation but now I eat like this..

B: Shake w/vitamins.

S: Fruit [ex. plum, cup of grapes, apple]

L: Meal replacement bar w/ half a sandwich [1 bread, 5 slices ham, 1 slice fat free cheese, and fat free mayo if i want]

S: Fruit.

D: I try and eat 1/4 protein, 1/4 carbs, and 1/2 veggies and a 2 cups of salad with some dressing.

S: I eat a fruit, or I eat a healthy peanut butter bar or healthy dessert yum.

That usually comes out to 1200 calories. I have been doing this for about a week and lost 2 pounds already :] and I didnt exercise. I just started adding exercise in as of today.

What are your stats? I am 5'5.5, 126 and 17.

I should eat around 1700, at sedentary. 1900 at lightly active.

So -500 would equal 1200, or 1400.

I'm 17, 4' 11'', and weight 94.

A typical day:

Breakfast: all-bran cereal with skim milk, banana

Lunch: spinach salad with carrots, balsamic vinegar, and usually tofu or something. Plus more fruit like apples and oranges.

Dinner: I try to have lots of veggies like green beans or broccoli or cauliflower, then perhaps rice with chicken or something. But I sometimes tend to binge by an extra 400-500 calories , ack.

Snacks: I usually eat cashews or soy nuts throughout the day, probably not a good idea because they are so high caloric. Maybe i'll cut those out, or at least not eat very much of them.

Usually I'll imagine that I ate pretty healthily and smallish amounts, but then realize it was much more.

That doesn't sound like a lot of food at all. it doesn't sound like -enough- food.

Are you trying to maintain your weight or lose weight?

Your BMI is already 19, why are you trying to lose weight??

I'm only trying to lose a few pounds, I have a really small frame.

I know but pretty soon you'll be unhealthy. Is that what you want? You literally can only weigh 92 pounds and that is SO on the edge, so I am talking 92 pounds when you wake up in the morning and thats how much you weigh.

88 pounds?! OMG. do you seriously want to look like a twelve year old girl with skinny legs, no curves and no boobs because that is where your heading and I am not trying to be mean, but 88 pounds would give you a BMI of 17.8 and that is SO underweight to the point you will be sick, and not having a period. A healthy bmi a girl should look for is 20, and that is being toned and sexy, curvy.

I say work out your muscles and be 99 pounds :]

I don't necessarily agree with this statement, I currently have a  BMI of 19.4 and my goal weight will take me to 17.8.  That's what my BMI was last year and never had any problems with my period stopping or irregularity. And I had curves :P

Cowcow, the thing I could see as a problem is that you are young and still growing- you should not be using the same scale an adult woman uses yet I don't think.

I absolutely agree with the working out though- you'll feel and look better for it!

Good luck and be healthy!

I've weighed 88 before, like 5 months ago, and i was totally fine and my period didn't stop or anything.

queenmedia & cowcow, you, personally, may not think it's unhealthy however the WHO and the guidelines of Calorie Count say that under 18.5 is an underweight BMI and to be avoided for good health. We do not condone the promotion of diets resulting in underweight BMIs and be warned it's against posting guidelines for the forums. You are at perfectly healthy weights, super slim even, so why lose more?

Yeah I'm with you I'm seriously doubting it.  I really don't think I burn that many calories per day.

Dieting and weight are such controversial topics.  People can say what they want, but I am a firm believer that some people are just blessed with high and fast metabolisms, while others are not.  For example this site is allotting me 1,750 a day.  There is no way I will ever lose weight eating that many calories per day.  Why?  Because I don't think I burn as many as they think that I do, because I have a sluggish metabolism.  I lost a lot of weight years ago and if I eat more than like 1,300 I will NOT lose weight, regardless of exercise or eating a low fat content.

Depressing, but true...

spoookee - if the site says you can eat 1750 cals a day, it has taken into account your body height and weight, as well as your activity level.  Did you input that you were trying to lose?  If so, then try to up your calories towards the 1700 zone.  I know it seems like a lot.  I did Weight Watchers years ago and lost over 40 lbs, but then stalled when I increased my workouts.  I maintained for 5 years by eating too few calories.  Like you, I assumed that if I ate over a certain number, I'd gain weight (and experience had solidified this belief).   I'm trying to lose another 10lbs, but this time, I'm eating 1600 calories a day.  Let me just clarify that this is almost 500 calories more than WW had advocated.  It took almost a month for my metabolism to start up properly again, but now I'm 5 lbs lighter.   Try to fix your metabolism - increase calories and exercise!  It's so much easier to eat, knowing that I don't need to deprive myself or be worried about every little thing I put in my mouth!
