Ahh I have to get my wisdom teeth pulled!!

Quote  |  Reply

I have a dentist appt on April 22 to find out for sure, but it looks as if I'm getting my teeth pulled :(  I have never been "put under" before and that scares me most!  Plus, I HATE blood and pain :(  I know my diet will suffer from this, because I can only have liquids and soft stuff for 3-5 days... maybe I'll have to start the slim fast diet!  I've never had a cavity or any tooth problem and I'm 23, so this sucks!

Is it as bad as I think it is to get your teeth pulled?

And, what did you eat?

I was petrified to get my wisdom teeth pulled and I had heard all these horror stories. It was about 1,000% BETTER than everyone told me it was going to be!! Seriously. I am not just saying that to make you feel better. I didn't have much swelling and I had hardly any pain - I just took ibuprofen. I think I ate yogurt and ice cream mostly.

the worst part is healing after the surgery. I had it done and being "put under" is just like falling asleep. some people fall asleep and some don't, but either way you won't feel anything and you will be on drugs so you won't feel scared or anything...you will probably be all happy and stuff, ha ha. i swear.

What I did on the way home was get a soft serve frozen vanilla ice cream thing from wendies.. I hadn't eaten all day (you can't eat before the surgery) and so I was really hungry and the coldness really helped with being sore. I was still on drugs at that point so it didn't hurt very much but my jaw was a bit sore. I really recommend it. you won't be eating many calories in those few days anyway so don't worry about restricting.

mostly I ate soup broth with VERY SMALL and VERY SOFT noodles in it... and also applesauce, pudding, scrambled eggs, chocolate milk. I was able to eat a little bit of toast too but remember that you can't really chew ANYTHING for the first 3 days..you basically have to mash it in your mouth with your tongue as best u can and then swallow it..sorry for being a bit graphic.

they also do give you pain medicine to take for like a week after the surgery so if it gets too bad, just take one and it will also make you sleep.

the worst thing i remember from getting mine pulled was how I slept so much after! luckily my mom made me food and would bring it to me and leave stuff on the bedside, etc. make sure you have a few books to read near you

Well, look on the bright side -- the liquid diet will keep the weight off from inactivity because you feel like ****, and the vomiting you will probably do from swallowing blood and the pain medicine will count as negative calories and will help strengthen your abs.

Just kidding -- you'll be fine -- it seems really scary (and, it is) but rarely does anything ever turn out as bad (or good) as you think it will.

I got my period the same day I had mine pulled out and I was honestly in more pain from cramps than from my teeth.

I ate pudding, applesauce and scrambled eggs mostly (on the first day even). Probably the worst thing about the whole thing is having the stitches in your mouth and the gross taste/smell because you can't really brush properly.

Even though you can't eat much, try to make sure you get enough nutrients or you'll just feel worse. Depending on how little you're able to eat you might even want to get meal replacements like ensure of something.

I had to have my wisdom teeth cut out from under the bone when I was in high school.  Talk about painful!  I seriously don't remember about 3 days of my life.  My mom kept feeding me painkillers like they were candy...lol

If you're just getting them pulled, you'll be fine.  One of my friends had this done and was out at a bar with us the next night and you could barely see the swelling.

I would stick with eating anything cold.  That will feel good on your mouth.  Ice cream, pudding, applesauce, milkshakes...(probably not to good for a diet, but I guarantee you won't be able to eat enough to gain weight).

Thanks guys.  I feel better knowing it's not going to be that bad.  I think I'll pick up some ensure or slimfast when I grab my pain killers :)  When my sister had hers done, she was crying and puking for like the first 2 days.  Maybe she's just dramatic LOL

I was out the three days following the procedure (1 painkiller and I was knocked out for about 12 hrs), so it was a breeze! ;p

haha, hopefully that is what happens for me!!  I can't take vicodin, it makes me REALLY dizzy and generally nauseous.  I really hope my husband takes over baby duties while I'm down and out Foot in mouth

lol i thought it was fun getting mine out :P you're basically high for the rest of the day so plan to just lay in bed and watch movies or sleep. make sure you have someone that can help change your bandages because they will bleed and it'll be gross. eat pudding, jello, mashed potatoes, etc. i wouldn't recommend pb because it might loosen your stitches.

I had all four of mine taken out at the same time in my regular dentists office.  They were not impacted and it was not bad at all.  I was scared but they gave me something to take before I went in to relax me and first thing I remember is being in the car going home.  I slept a lot and ate soft stuff for a few days but it was in no way as bad as the horror stories I had heard.

yum, I love pudding... that'll definitely have to be one thing I buy a bunch of.  The worst part is the wait... I have my appt on Tuesday to find out WHEN they can schedule me for surgery... BLAH!  My teeth hurt so bad already, it's driving me nuts!  I have to drink luke warm water, lemonaide, tea, etc. because my teeth are so sensitive Frown  And I can never remember to order my water without ice at a restaurant... so lame.

I guess I'll have to use some sick days at work for this one.  Maybe I'll plan for surgery on a Friday and then take off Monday, too.  My girlfriend said the 3rd day was the worst!  Good thing daddy is a pharmacist, he'll tell me what to take :)  Thanks for all the suggestions!

Yes!  Mine were impacted too and it was awful.  My mom told the dentist that my family had a history of getting sick from anesthesia, and the guy told her they'd put an antinausea medicine in the drip...but they didn't.  Puking an hour after mouth surgury was not fun.  My mom got me home, but I don't remember anything for days after.

Have some ice packs handy in the freezer for when you get home, it'll help the swelling.

I had mine out in December...but not until AFTER they had gotten REEEEEALLLLLY infected.  They had grown in, but only partly, years before and the dentist originally said just let them grow in...well, they never came all the way up and were still half covered in gum, making them easily infected.

So anyways, my point is that they were WAAAAAY painful before getting them out--horribly, terribly painful.  But then I had them pulled, and everything was SO much better!  Yes, the healing from the surgery hurt some, but in comparison it was nothing.

So, the bottom line is:  better out than in!  I so wish I had gotten mine out before they ever got infected--would have saved me a lot of pain!  And *usually* the surgery's not all that bad.  Being put under is not scary at all--one second you're looking at the oral surgeon and the next you wake up in another room!  Just make sure you have someone to help you that day while you have gauze in your mouth and everything, and you'll be fine!  Good luck!

Wow, I didn't think about that but I will probably need someone helping me all day.  I'll probably freak out seeing all the blood and having terrible pain in my mouth.  Ugh... I am so dreading this.  Maybe I'll call my mom over, she used to be a nurse so she'll know what to do.

I had mine pulled in February, and I had myself totally worked up about it. Then I took the valium. It's good stuff! Seriously, tho, I was sore for a couple of days, but after about 3 days I could function like a human being again. I have a low tolerance of pain so I was taking ibuprofen ALL the time, but it was WAY better than I had thought it would be! Don't let the horror stories scare you! My biggest problem is that I clench my teeth at night, so I was eating soft food for about 2 weeks.  The best part about getting them pulled? YOU NEVER HAVE TO DO IT AGAIN!!  Wink  Good luck!

The time has come.  I do have to get them pulled.  But silly as it may seem, I only have 1 wisdom tooth!  Yay!  That makes for a better recovery, I'm sure!  My dentist recommends that I just get the numbing shot, rather than get put under Surprised  He said the worst part would be the cracking of the tooth (ugh, barf!)

May 6 - my first filling for my first cavity :(  and then soon after I have to get my one wisdom tooth plucked from my mouth.
