Airplane food.

Quote  |  Reply

Well, I'll be going on a flight soon, and I can clearly recall what happened to me last time I went on a plane... I ate everything they gave me.

So this time, I'm planning ahead. Any suggestions? Non-perishable snacks and things to bring in my carry-on? =)

well the last time i was on a plane the had the option of those baby carrot slice packs things or apple slices packs things.  If you want snack you can bring ON the plane...

carrots (might be repetative from above but they work)
low fat/cal protein bars
home made trail mix (controlled portions)
100 cal snack packs
nuts
low cal gum
homemade tortilla wraps filled with whatever you want

LOTS OF WATER

they also have tea options

hope this helps

take care
If you eat everything the airplane gives you, chances are, you will eat all of your snacks AND the food the airplane gives you.

I don't know what class you are planning on flying and what airline, but many MAJOR airlines have vegetarian plates (which taste just awful...of course I think all vegetarian food tastes awful...but it will fill you up) that have basically no calories.  The carrots are good idea (negligible calories), pickles (also negligible calories), and ...huh, what else has few calories...I would bring some Crystal-Lite packets with you to add to the water they will give you.  That always helps.
How long is your flight? I've never had a travel experience (with connecting flights and all) last more than 5 hours total so I typically eat a good meal before hand, eat a snack on the flight (typically the nuts or something) and drink a lot of water.
Hee, I like long flights... they're the only time I don't feel guilty eating ice cream (all 1/4 cup of it!)

14 hours to England next week... sigh. I always feel like a sardine in those seats. Being 5' helps somewhat, but I still can't stand up and move, dagnabit.

Hopefully my fiance will like the new, 10-lbs-less-of, me!

=)
I was just recently on a plane...and this lady brought caviar, smoked salmon, and some weird cheeses with crackers...it smelled rather fowl.

Bring a bottle of water...and some fruit you can get to rather easily...trail mix that is high in protein....

Go to your local grocery store...the one I work at has a health food aisle with great ideas...(I just can't think of any...)

HAVE FUN!

Bring snacks you'll want to eat... apples and cheese (portioned out), 10 almonds in a bag, grapes, etc... and a big way to avoid the airline food - JUST SAY NO! ... a "no thank you" to the offer of airline food means that the temtation is not in front of you.
well if you actually luck out and they give you food because now a days it can be a rarety.  Also, if their is food on your flight you can call ahead and ask for a special meal, ie. lowfat.  Also, you can opt to bring your own food with you and just not accept the airplane food.
Hey, I would'nt worry about it, cos the plane portions or so cute and small. I suggest each everything lol. But avoid the alcohol and drink the water....
I don't know what airline you will be riding, but I've always ridden Continental, and you can order, like dcgirl said, a 'special' meal like vegetarian, hindu, or lowfat, no extra cost. Then you get your meal ahead of everybody else, too =D

But even if you don't, I agree with uncompromise that the portions are perfect. Just give away the desert (milano cookies, snickers bar, whatever it is) to the person next to you, and you should be fine, calorie wise. If you want, skip over the chips, too.

I just went to Costco and say "Seapoint Farms Dry Roasted Edaname". Let me tell you about the AMAZING nutrition facts:

1/4 cup has only 130 calories, 4 grams of fat, 8 grams of fiber, 14 grams of protein!

I ALWAYS bring pre-portioned zip-lock bags of these AMAZING and delicious beans! They taste just like peanuts but with less fat and better nutritionals!

Also... I travel across the Atlantic so here's my two cents:

Veggies: Carrots, Peppers, Soybeans, and even black beans all travel well

Fruit: Apples, Grapes, Pears, Bananas, Apricots, Prunes, Cherries, all travel really well! I find that bananas are the easiest to carry though, but if you travel often it can get kind of boring!

Nuts: 1/4 cup (or 30 grams) of nuts with a piece of fruit will starve off hunger for a while due to it's high fat content

Hard Cheese: Reduced-fat HARD cheese travels very well and tastes delicious. At Costco, they have reduced-fat cheddar cheese in four different kinds of flavors! Pair a serving of cheese (70 calories, 8 grams of protein) with an apple or another high-fiber fruit and it will keep you full very long!

Old-Fashioned Sandwich: This is actually my favorite. Make yourself a whole wheat sandwich with a slice of reduced-fat hard cheese like Cheddar, Colby, Swiss, Parmesan, Provolone or Romano (all of these are safe to eat when not in the fridge) and add a slice of roast beef, turkey, ham, etc... If you want, add some mustard, relish, or even light mayo (safe to eat as well when not in the fridge unlike popular belief!) to the sandwich and wrap it with some foil to take it to-go!
