Okay, I'm going to be as vague as possible with this question.
Why is it that an evening after drinking usually results in needing to "go" go the morning after?
What is your body getting rid of when it "goes" the morning after drinking? The alcohol itself or is it losing nutrients that your body should be processing?
Is this a good thing or a bad thing? I usually associate #2 with being good and healthy, but things are obviously a bit different when I was out livin' it up the night before...
The word 'toxin' gets bandied around a lot these days when talking about diets... mostly inaccurately. But alcohol is genuinely toxic - poisonous, in fact. Drink too much and you can be sick... i.e. get rid of the poison the way it came in. In extreme cases, you're dead
If you've had a night out drinking you give your filters (liver and kidneys) a lot to do to get the nasty stuff out of your body as quickly as possible... via the back exit. Often means you get a 'gyppy tummy' the next day, maybe stomach-aches, gas etc. If you inspect the results (and I wouldn't exactly recommend it) you can find they're not healthy-looking at all
What your body is getting rid of is things that you have eaten that were non-digestible like insoluble fiber, resistant starches, and non-food stuff. Alcohol has nothing to do with it.
You've never had an upset stomach from drinking?.... Never felt sick?.... Never pebble-dashed the lavatory the next day? Yes, the body is getting rid of waste material but it's speeded up by excess alcohol in the same way a stomach bug might speed it up.
I make it a habit not to drink alcohol to excess so no this doesn't happen to me.
But alcohol or no, nothing is coming out of your butt that you didn't put in your mouth. I don't care how nasty it may look in the toilet, you ate it.
Alright, thank you everyone. Yes, I don't recommend drinking in excess myself. However, I was just being inquisitive as to what exactly is going on inside when this happens.
I try not to drink in excess. However, last night I was at a meeting being hosted by a woman who was WAY too good at refilling our glasses...
Hahaha, this was very entertaining to read through and very educational as well. Thanks gi-jane for filling me in and making me laugh at the same time.
Beyond what Gi-Jane has pointed out -- the liver handles most of the toxicity of alcohol (which is why it can be irreversibly damaged with alcohol abuse) -- and the results leave through the back door, it is also possible you have intolerance to sulfites.
If you find the stools are loose, and/or if there is any cramping or urgency to go, then you may not tolerate the sulfites that are found in most alcoholic drinks (beer, wines, ciders, and some hard liquors as well).
I believe California is the only state that requires sulfites be listed on alcoholic drinks. Organic wines, beers and ciders usually include sulfites (which surprises most people).
So it is not easy to find sulfite-free alcoholic drinks -- many with the intolerance who enjoy wine end up making their own at home.
Most who have a reaction to sulfites have headaches, but others can have an upset digestive system. Of course for those with headache reactions they often assume it is due to a hangover.
Hed-This is totally me! I know I have problems with sulfites from getting terrible headaches from drinking (red wine in particular). I bet that this and my digestive system are connected.
I never heard before that people with sulfite allergies can also have bathroom problems. I'll have to look into it.
