Alcoholic Drinks?

Quote  |  Reply

Okay, so last night I went out to bars and stayed out from 9-2. I only had 1 kamakaze (spelling??) shot and maybe less than 1/4 cup of hard apple cider guessing and lots of water. I only took 2 small bites of my boyfriends pizza, which I was also amazed lol...I guess it is easier to pass on the 2 in the morning snacks when you are sober, not really drunk. For me, this was really great, because usually (and not that I go out and drink all the time) I might have like 5 or 6 drinks and then go out afterwards and have bad , greasy food like pizza and cookies.

Anyway, my question is what do you guys think is the healthiest drink to order? I need ideas for when I go out again. Also, I don't drink coke/diet coke...so I wouldn't want that as a mixer. Thanks!

How old are you??  Who was driving?   Any alcohol is fattening.."hard" is worse - NO one should have to tell you more than 2 drinks is BAD - duh.  Stick with a glass or two of wine.

i've heard that, if you're looking to get a buzz for the least calories, vodka & sugar free red bull is one of your best bets...something about energy drinks makes you get a buzz faster, from what i've read. one bartender also told me that vodka would be the best thing to drink if you're watching calories...but it's best to not drink if you're trying to lose weight. it's just a lot easier that way, it seems.

Healthiest? Whiskey. I always found it to cure what ails ya.

Assuming you mean for weight loss/caloric count, no such thing, really. Outside of drinks that actually have sugar added (some Margaritas, Rock and Rye, Lemon Drops, Mojitos) you pretty well come out equal. The exceptions are your liquers, which skew slightly more, and your dryer wines, that skew somewhat less. Still, since the empty caloric business is (sort of) how the liquor works, diet vodka is like low sodium salt and carb-free bread.

If I had to pick, it would be one that I can have one of and only one of, while still enjoying a night out on the town. Personally, I think the classic cocktails are good for this, unless you want to, say, slam two shots of tequila right at the get go and ride the drunk through for the rest of the evening.

Always watch for mixers, though, for things that have fruit juice/fruits, or tonic water. The Cosmo, for instance, would be the exception to the above rule. Tonic water's as calorie-bad as coke or beer. That so, more and more bars have diet tonic water behind the shelf, so you can still get your anti-malarials in without the added poundage.

Personally, my favorite drink is a Mojito, and they are only 150 calories!  Or sometimes I will also get a Diet Coke and Light Rum, or a Gin and Diet Tonic. My rule of thumb is to try to keep it to one, and absolutley no more than two.

It's all colorie ridden...but I hear you, I love to go out!

I like to go with gin and diet tonic if they have it, whisky and diet coke, or a nice glass of red wine. All around 80-100 calories. Just keep track.

I also really enjoy warm sake...you can ask them to cut it half and half with boiling water. It still tastes great, and takes a while to drink b/c it is served in a carafe. Besides, I am told that this is how it is traditionally served in Japan. :) Also, sake is a "clean" drink, meaning it is brewed without any additives, unlike a lot of liquors.

#1 rule: stay away from beer (oh I love beer...!) If you must (which I must!), just have 1 glass and order a 10-oz schooner!

Alcohol = alcohol. One glass of wine = one drink with liquor. There are a few great posts here on why people gain weight from drinking, but alcohol is a sugar, not a fat, and the body process is complicated. Therefore, to prevent myself from sounding like a jackass, I will not attempt to explain it. And what is your problem anyway?

My old preference is vodka and seltzer water with lime - it's light and balances out your water and alcohol.
Agreed.  Vodka and seltzer water.  If they give you the small cup, it's only like 65 cals.  Sidenote:  don't have too many, these badboys sneak up on you kinda quick haha.

I am happy to report I went out to happy hour last night and drank about 6 selzters- no vodka!  :)

I agree with everyone that said Vodka and like Strawburpu posted, I drink mine with Sugar free Red Bull which only has 10 calories. I buy a bottle of vodka so I know how much I consume and I figure out the calories..... Plus its way cheaper then buying a drink at the bar. Then I just stick to water in between my shots.

You got to remember that dancing for 5 minutes burns 28 calories, 10min = 56...etc. If your like me, I dance at least 2 hours from 10-3am. So having vodka and a low cal drink will be way off your hips before you get home!

I usually stick to one beer if I'm just on a social drink type outing, or stick to vodka if I'm out to drink/dance/generally be a drunk. You could do diet coke and vodka, or seltzer and vodka... I usually do straight up or with lemon (Found that that tasted good when I asked for a lemon drop at a bar in Montreal where they thought it was just vodka with a lemon squeezed in it.)  All in all, just as with anything else that's not healthy when trying to lose weight, moderation is key - it's a treat, but there is nothing inherently wrong with it (still trying to decipher the post about how dumb people are to drink alcohol while dieting and they should be drinking wine instead... yeah)

WTF are you like the forum mom or something? They were asking a question about calories, not wanting your judgement on their life, Jesus.

To answer the original poster hard alcohols tend to have less calories than beers and margaritas. Light beers are usually 100-110 calories or so. If you're looking for the buzz without the calories I would go for something with vodka or rum. Mixed drinks tend to be way more fattening cause of all the added sugar. (edit:change text) If you order drinks at the bars try ones that are mixed with fruit juice, those tend to be better than ones with chocolate, or other sweeteners.

And YES I'm 20 and I drink, bite me.

Except for wine snobs who apparently don't realize that wine is alcohol?

 ....wtf.

Wow are you my mom lol.  I am 24 years old, I live in San Francisco, so I take public transportation or cab which pretty much everyone here does.  I would never drink and drive.  I know that more is 2 is bad...thank you for pointing that out though, I don't know what I would've done if you didn't tell me that.   I had less than 2 the last time I went out.  Socially, drinking one or two every once in awhile is fine.  I really don't drink that much.  My question was more if I am drinking one or two socially, what is the best, calorie wise/health wise etc.

Umm to clarify, my above post was to the annoying person who posted, "How old are you??  Who was driving?   Any alcohol is fattening.."hard" is worse - NO one should have to tell you more than 2 drinks is BAD - duh.  Stick with a glass or two of wine." lol

well said misspriss316!!

Decent drink with zero calories - vodka & soda water with a lime.  Its clean... no sugar so you don't get hungover and zero calories!  If you don't like the taste of vodka have 2 limes in there... its great summer drink.

;)

(EDIT - sorry I mean carbs....  vodka does have calories.. but I think its zero carbs??)

Not to nitpick, but vodka has calories.

Wow, good thing dreenaeb83 has you to play "mommy" for her ... why is it so important that you know how old she is? Or who was driving? Maybe SHE was driving ... if she had one shot-type drink, and 1/4 of a pint of hard cider, I seriously doubt anyone would sound the alarms as to whether or not SHE was driving. Sorry, but this is real life, where real adults drink alcohol ... even if they are BAD, BAD, BAD!! Duh.

lol.  Thank you tatooed_kitty.  Yeah that lady was a little intense.  I mean I saw in her profile she is 60 years old, and I am not knocking her age, but I mean I am sure at some point in her life she has drank more than 2 drinks before lol.  I mean I am 24 and wasn't driving. I live in San Francisco, there are so many places to go and drink and the city is set up so you take public transportation or cabs...if anything there are probably less drunk drivers here than in smaller towns (which I know because I used to live in a small town and lots of people would drive drunk like it was no big deal which is bad)  Anyway, my whole point of the post was trying to say I am trying to go out and not drink much, so what are my best options health and caloric wise, but she obviously did not read the whole thing.
