Aliens and Life on other Planets
I have always believed in life on other planets. I just can't believe the only semi-intelligent life in the whole universe is here on Earth.
I'm also of the mind set that believes we Earth creatures have probably been visited by more intelligent life.
What do you all believe?
Sheer Statistics suggest that Life, in some semblance or other, probably exists outside of our world, but since A) There's no guarantee how advanced the race is B) No guarantee that it looks anything like what we might consider life and C) the sheer VASTNESS of space, I don't know that I believe we've ever been visited, just simply that it most likely exists.
still, as much as i love the idea of life on other planets (and the idea that we've been visited), i don't invest a lot of mental energy in it. i have enough to keep me occupied here!
Just think what proof of extra terrestrial life would do to the major religions on Earth.

Create more religions - some of which focused on little green men worship?

I wonder how long it would take before a group would try to "save" the aliens with Jesus.
On another note ... What would the creationists do if the aliens provided proof that the earth was more than 6,000 years old?
*rides off on a dinosaur before this turns into a religion thread*
"Sometimes I think the surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us." (Calvin - "The Indispensable Calvin and Hobbes")
Santonacci, now that's a quote I can get behind.

They were sent by the devil to test our faith!

LMAO, thanks!
Mooni be nice. Your religion is no more strange than christianity.
The fact that your religion has a small disorganized following is the only reason that no enterprising individual has posed as an authority on the matter in attempt to steer the religion for their personal agenda.
There is nothing wrong with any religion of which I'm aware. It's the whackjobs that hijack the religion for their own benefit that are the problem, so please lay off the christians.
That's the first time someone told me my religion is no more strange than christianity. Does that mean you think christianity is strange? If so, why.
I really am serious about imagining what finding proof of intelligent life would do to all of the world's main religions. Think about it. What would happen? How would the main religious leaders react? How would the common people react if there was proof that certain beliefs were indeed false.
I love to read science fiction. Many science fiction authors use a whole different paradigm to create their stories. It is interesting to see what their imagined worlds are like and to picture different moral codes based on those worlds.
I believe that there must be some other life (at least non-intelligent) somewhere. I find the discovery of water, on one of Jupiter's moons I think? to be interesting, the possibility that there could be something in it, even if it's just one-celled.
I don't believe we have been visited, and don't think we ever will.

In all seriousness, I think they would just rationalize it or try to work it into their beliefs somehow... ie for Christianity maybe it was predicted in Revelations or something. And if all else fails you can fall back on "God works in mysterious ways", and "you have to have faith".
It may cause some new religions to form or some people might change religions, but overall I don't think man will ever move away from religions. For some reason it is ingrained into us? Like the South Park episode where everyone became atheist, but then there were wars over which group of atheists were better, etc.
Edited to add... moonikins, just curious about what is your religion, if I may ask?
