What is the secrets to dieting?

There is no secret.  However it helps not to look at it as a diet but rather a long-term, lifestyle change.  Dieting, and losing weight quickly is almost always the path towards the yo-yo.  If you change your lifestyle and incorporate a 90-10 approach to your food and a 4/45 approach to exercise -- you will almost definitely achieve sustainable weight loss.  That's 90% eating well and "clean" and good and healthy -- and 10% of whatever you want.  And 4 days of 45 mins of exercise per week

How are successful dieters getting through?

Setting achievable goals (5-10lb at a pop rather than the quick 20-25).  Eating smartly and not restrictive.  Eating enough to sustain the weight loss, not auto shutting off at 1200 or less.  Exercising regularly.  Making an effort to move throughout the day rather than staying completely sedentary

How do you get out of binging your life away?

You have to figure out what is causing the binges.  Binges are usually an emotional reaction to something that has happened in your life -- a binge is relinquishing all control, which occasionally leads to emotional release (but recriminations afterwards).  Binges borne of over restricting certain foods can be alleviated (but not necessarily stopped) by incorporating those foods into your daily/weekly life -- if much smaller portions.

How do you keep it at a good pace?

I am at a virtual standstill, after 60lb in about 6 months -- but I have not yet given up, I continue to log my food and watch my exercise.  When I was losing, I was simply eating enough and of the right things.

Choosing a weight that is actually right for your body and not just to fit some artificial ideal can help ensure you have more success.

my secret to dieting is to never give up. my secret to beating binging is twofold: make room for treats every day and also when I do mess up, remember that all is not lost. I keep it at a good pace by doing things that I know motivate myself... reading the forums is one. the other one is experimenting with the many different kinds of recipes that I find on CC, Hungry-Girl.com, and google. I either take the ones that are made for low calories or I take regular recipes and try to modify them. Then I am proud of myself when I make something that I enjoy AND is healthy for me. But, since dieting is not always fun like that, remember rule #1: slow and steady wins the weight loss race. never give up.

edit; I also strongly agree with what coach_k said.

i think the first three questions have the same answer (maybe the 4th as well): the "secret" is to be absolutely dead honest about how we got to where we are, and then change one thing at a time until we get to where we want to be.  for a lot of people, it's not about food; for some it is.  if we're self-medicating and we don't address the original problem, it will come back, either in the same form or in some other form.  if we try to change everything at once, we probably won't be able to maintain the changes (or we won't even be able to get started in the first place).

every little change has ripple effects.  don't discount the small stuff!

What is the secrets to dieting?

Not dieting.... Making better food choices voluntarily, paying more attention to portion-control, being active, being consistent.

How are successful dieters getting through?

Making sure at every step of the way that you are enjoying the food/exercise/lifestyle you've chosen.  And if not, changing it until it is enjoyable.

How do you get out of binging your life away?

By choosing satisfying, 'real', pleasurable foods that are delicious and uplifting. By eating 'better' rather than 'less'

How do you keep it at a good pace?

You don't set a pace, targets or any kind of expectations.  Work on finding a balanced, healthy, enjoyable lifestyle and treat any weight-loss as a happy side-effect.

What is the secrets to dieting?

Like those before me said, there is no secret. It is just making a choices for a healthier life style. The key for me is that you have to want to do it, you have to want to make those changes. I personallyjust got to a point where i couldn't keep gaining weight, it made me miserable. Making those changes have made me happier than i have in a long time. It has also made me feel proud of myself. How are successful dieters getting through?

Just keep going. Finding healthy foods that you like, exercise that you find fun. Rewarding yourself when you reach your targets!!

How do you get out of binging your life away?

For me personally I realised that cutting all of my favourite stuff out completely was not going to work- that is what wouod lead to me binging. I have things that i enjoy but always in the knowledge that the next day I just get right back on track.

How do you keep it at a good pace?

Changing the types of exercise you do, trying something new so that your body doesn't get bored!!

I have lost 37lbs since June 19th and although I have a few more to go I already feel amazing. Simple changes have given my life back. Don't get me wrong I was happy before, I have a great life, but i wasn't quite me. I started CC in March 2007 at 164lbs, i then managed to get up to 203lbs by June 2008 (I know, not quite what i intended when i joined up) . I refound CC and I am now 166lbs. i would like to lose another 30lbs, but i no that will take time but i will do it!!

What is the secret to dieting?

The secret is: There is no secret!

If there was... there wouldn't an entire industry selling products and writing books and creating websites like CC to try and coach us all to our healthy body weights and sell us on "get thin quick" schemes

If there was some almighty "secret" I can promise you it wouldn't stay a secret very long!

How are successful dieters getting through?

Mostly by not dieting. Instead they are being successful by making life changes and looking forward to healthy choices as good positive things and not as punishment.

Mostly people are successful by being AWARE of what is good for you. Food journals, calorie awareness, choosing healthier options. And exercising - because weight loss isn't just about the food.

How do you get out of binging your life away?

By recognizing that binging isn't going to get me anywhere. Make eating concious and not automatic. Recognize that you can eat small portions of not-so-good-for-you foods occosionally (and be AWARE of how often you do this) and it won't derail you from your goals. Also - don't buy what you don't want to put into your body!

How do you keep it at a good pace?

I assume this is in reference to weight loss? Really you just monitor it.  You track what you are doing and you review how it is working for you. When it isn't working you adjust. You will never lose the same amount of weight every week without fail - the human body is more complicated than that. If it was easy and steady then it wouldn't be such a challenge for so many people. There will be hiccups. Acknowledge that and just keep on plugging away.

Good things I've learned along the way:

  1. Calorie free beverages - when you are sick of water, tea! especially herbal fruit tea!
  2. The hardest part about exercise is getting yourself to the gym. But you never regret dragging yourself there after you're done your workout. Just do it.
  3. There is a big difference between needs and habits. Habits won't be broken without dedication. Do you NEED desert or is just habit to have it? Do you NEED cookies with tea - or do you just always have one? Re-evaluate your needs vs habits.

this really helped.. i started day one of my lifestyle change.

i want to eat greens and little servings of bread and sugar again. i feel so good when i do this!

thanks everyone!

Will power.

Remember, it's your choice. You choose what you put in your mouth and what you need.

This is so true! I have to drag myself to the gym and force myself to exercise, but it feels so good when your done. You really feel good about yourself after exercise because of the adrenaline and your accomplishment.
