All you Maintainers....whatcha doin' workout wise?

Hey guys...I feel that through all the food changes, we pretty much know what to eat....got the nutrition part down as per our body's needs.  So how are you keeping your shape?

Tonight, I'm running 7-8 miles (short run, actually...training!!!)  I do a ton of cardio....how 'bout you?

I go for a walk with my kids every day for at least 45 minutes-that is, my daughter rides her bike and I pull her brother in the wagon most days. I also putter around in my backyard, do twelve tons of laundry, clean continuously, and chase around the kids I babysit.

I do light weights for my arms, and I do my abs.

I'm too pooped to 'work out'. lol XD
oh my gosh, neeners, you play the piano???  how did i miss that.  do you know the brahms e minor sonata?  i'm going to play it this fall for a concert at the troy (MI) library.  i live in eastpointe. where are you??
actually, what i meant to post is that i'm planning to add a mile of biking to my daily walking with charlie.  starting off slow, but i'll hope to increase it gradually, in speed and distance.
I usually run about 3-4 (about 30 minutes or less) miles 3-4 times a week.  One day a week I work out with a trainer where we usually do a lot of pitates work or resistance training with my own body wieght.  Lots of core work as well.  Sometimes I do the elipitical for 45 minutes.  I also watch the scale.  I weigh in once a week on Tuesday mornings and see where I am at.  If I have gone up a little than I am much more conscience about eating well and not cheating on things.  I usually consume anywhere between 1000 and 1300 cals a day.  It really depends.  1300 is usually if there is something bad that I have eaten.  I would love to get down to 120 but I just don't think that is what my body wants to do realitically.  I am currently at 125 and pretty much have been there for about 1.5 years.
I'm running 4-5 days a week, anywhere from 6-12 miles. Speed work sprinkled in there, balanced with hill work outs as well. Sit-ups and weights (mostly arms and back) when I remember or care. :P Yoga when I can afford it.

I've always been active, but haven't run this much until this year. It's made me more...um, streamlined, i guess. But mostly, I think it's my diet that's helping me maintain--very low in saturated fat, high in raw grains, oats, nuts, fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy (I won't eat anything cute). I use to endulge in cheese fries and a pitcher of beer quite often. I ditched the cheese fries for a salad or veggie burger, and...kept the pitcher of beer. I've drawn the line in the sand; the beer stays!

There are certainly a lot of ways for us people who are trying to maintain to exercise, or I should state, for us who ARE MAINTAINING.  That would be all of us!  Many of you are doing some amazing things.  I wish all of you the best in maintaining your desired weight, exercising routine, and diet.

Since I finally made my weight window of 168-173 (I began about 4 and 1/2 months ago at 210-215), I have apparently been maintaining.  I have cut down my exercising from between 3 and 3 and 1/2 hours of exercising seven days a week to between 2 to 2 and 1/2 hours a day, six days a week.

I walk now for an hour (instead of the 90 minutes to 2 hours at 3.6 mph) at 4.5 mph.

I ride the exercise bike for 30 minutes (instead of for 60 minutes slower) faster, keeping my heart rate around 144.

I hit the heavy bag for 15 minutes.

I lift weights 20 minutes.

I do 7-12 minutes of crunchers.

I am currently averaging taking in 2900 calories a day; I will have to carefully monitor my calorie intake to see if I am, indeed, maintaining my weight.

On some days I burn more calories, since I sometimes walk to the park or downtown or mow the yard, etc., plus do my exercising.

every 2-3 days I go to the gym and do 35 minutes of "Vigorous" cardio on the Elliptical, then on any of the off days from cardio I'll go to the indoor rock gym and rock climb for about 1.5-2 hours, realistically, I'm doing cardio to get better at climbing.

Original Post by stainofmind:

Ive been running for about 30 mins, every other day. The other days, I do toning. Somtimes, Ill take a sunday off. Its working out good so far!

What do you mean when you say you do toning? Weights? Calisthenics?

I go to the gym about 4x a week, about 60 mins - 180 mins each time. Mostly I'm a treadmill bunny (love to run) but I do also try and cross-train and lift weights.

I just (finally) got my mitts on NROLW and can't wait to start it - it's such a great read and I've really been needing some instructions on how to lift weights properly.

Cycling! I love being outside and I love flying down the road or trail on my bike. I usually ride about 50-75 miles a week. Right now, I try to ride my road bike 15 miles on Monday, 15 on Tuesday then on Wednesday I do 8-10 miles on the mountain bike, then usually take off Thursday and Friday. On the weekends I usually get in 25-50 road miles and then get out at least once on the mountain bike. This weekend I am doing a 20 mile ride on Saturday morning and a 25 miler on Sunday.

I find that the road bike provides a great toning cardio workout as it is pretty much a constant cadence. The mountain biking is great, but in a different way. It is short blasts of power to climb hills and then resting while dodging trees, rocks, etc on the downhills.

Summer and Fall is great for me- I love outdoors work. I currently am picking strawberries 3 hours most days (I live on a berry farm), weeding, hub and I are shingling our little barn, painting the exterior of our house, and I mow the lawn with a push mower twice a week (about 1/2 an acre).

Next month we'll be working on sawing, splitting and ranking 7 cords of wood :)

I try to run 2-3 miles (although I am trying to gradually increase my distance) 5-6 times a week.  I want to get up to at least 6 miles without stopping and be able to do it comfortably. I'm sort of training for a 10K race next May. I also take a ballet class twice a week for 1.5 hours.

Hopefully, we could keep the thread going, so it doesn't get lost.  I like to see how everyone is doing and what they are doing.  We don't all always do the same exercise each day, so maybe, even if there is repetition, we could keep the thread active.  And on days we don't get exercise in, we could confess up on that, too.

Today, I did the following:

80 minutes of moderate speed walking out of town and up gradual inclines occasionally.

18 minutes of triceps and handgrips

35 minutes of moderate speed on stationary bike

7 minutes of crunchers/abs

15 minutes of hitting the heavy bag

walked downtown and carried back a small sack of groceries (20 blocks total)

Not only did I overeat today, but I underexercised.

90 minute walk (not a very fast pace, I'm afraid)

15 minutes on the heavy bag

35 minutes exercise bike--moderate pace

I'm so lazy compared to you guys.

Lesse - I have a simple rule. If I can take the bus, I walk instead. At least 2-3 station distances if it's a long one. I take the bike out around the neighbourhood maybe once a week, but only if it's early morning (and I don't wake up then :P) too bloody hot. I do a LOT of stretching. That's about it.

I've been saving for a threadmill, since I love walking (NOT running). I'm planning on doing 1 hour of fast walking then each evening.

And no, I can't do it outside, it's dangerous, and too hot, and I catch colds easily (getting home with wet clothes - no thanks).

Well, what a cool question...hmmm...let me see...Today I did the eliptical trainer for 68 minutes...about 9 miles, and then about an hour of circuit training. I work out at the gym 5 days a week on average 2 and a half hours each time, and in the weekends I go on long and strenuous hikes. Also, on Sundays I play soccer and badminton, so I keep myself busy. I love exercising!

suzushii:  Best of luck on getting your treadmill.  I have read several different places that if a person can just get in 4-5 good 30 minute walks in, he/she will be doing wonders for the body.  Good idea about walking.  I often walk to the grocery store (10 blocks there) and carry home a sack of groceries.

serendipitylucy:  Wow!  You are an exercise machine!  Very impressive!  That is neat that you love exercising, since you will always want to exercise even when you get older.

i dont do nearly 1/4 of the amount as others here but i hear d for good cardio-vascular health u need-

90-120 mins of moderate activity a week, thats it!

agru:  I agree with that assessment, particularly for people past 40.  I am not so certain for younger than that, but I haven't done much research on that.  I do believe if those of us who could would get in 4 or 5 good 30 minute workouts a week, our country would be a lot healthier.

2 hours 5 minues (walk--half at moderate, half at light--some ups and downs--not just flat surface)

17 minutes heavy bag

9 minutes ab/crunchers

19 minutes biceps

1 hr exercise bike (light)

weight after all this--168.6 (which I know is "cheating" a bit) so.....now...I am...

going to have a homemade whole wheat flour pizza and a bottle or two of wine

18 minutes heavy bag

12 minutes abs/crunchers

20 minutes triceps and handgrips

50 minutes of stationary bike (light)

1 hr. 12 mins of walking around the HS track (3.6 mph)

A thunderstorm went through around 4:00 a..m., so I ended up getting up a lot earlier than I had planned.  I got all of my exercise in early for a change.

1 hr. 13 minute walk (3. 5 mph)

(30 minute break)

13 minutes of abs/crunchers

(2 hour break)

20 minutes of triceps and handgrips

16 minutes of heavy bag

(2 hour break)

35 minutes of stationary bike (Polar monitor kept above 145 on average)

I probably got more exercise from the 50 minutes I spent Sunday washing my wife's car (that front bumper and those bugs!  What a chore that was getting it clean!) and spending about an hour yesterday trimming up the yard and around sidewalks, etc. than I do when I walk for an hour to an hour and 1/2.  I need to increase my walking pace.  I think I could accomplish just as much from a fast 35 minute walk as I do in a slow 70 minute walk.

The trouble is I don't like walking fast.  LOL!
