Weight Loss
Moderators: duke3522, devilish_patsy, topanga1485, nycgirl, spoiled_candy, cmillington, coach_k All this talk about carbs and BREAD....
I've heard so many people saying that if you cut on carbs you lose weight a lot easier. And I've also heard that bread makes you FAT. Especially white bread. And, last but not least, no carbs at night, anything but carbs, or you put on weight.
I''m sure it's not right. It can't be, carbs are important, and they are practically everywhere. But these talks influence me, and I try not to eat any carbs(apart from carb in fruit) after breakfast, when I have cereals. Where does this talk come from? It's not like I eat too much bread, but for example I like to have some spaggheti for dinner, but then I fell guilty. I know that what's most important is calories in-calories out, but i'd love to know if some of the calories are harder to burn than others!
Thanks!!!

People say to avoid carbs because it's easier this way. You can totally eat carbs. The important thing is having a calorie deficit, it has nothing to do with what you eat.
Now, it's better for you to not cut carbs because you will not avoid it the rest of your life. What you can do is eat whole wheat and whole grain. Those are complex carbs and it takes longer for your system to metabolise it so you fell full longer.
People say to avoid carbs at night because as you know, when people snacks, it's full of carbs. But you can eat whatever you want at night, just stay in your calorie range.
Carbs are good for you but make healty choices!!

I eat carbs a lot. Carbs got a bad rep during the Adkins days, but fruit, veggies, and whole grains are good for you. Complex carbs help me stay full and full of energy. I have no problem eating carbs in the evening, I just try to stick to complex carbs as much as possible.
You're right. It's not right.
SOME people are carb-sensitive. They can't lose weight easily with fewer carbs, ESPECIALLY simple sugars. That's simply not true for everyone.
Honestly, our recommendations do include cutting down on simple sugars, if possible. They tend to provide 0 nutritional benefit and you know what they do to your blood sugar (spike and drop quickly), but that doesn't mean that cutting down on carbs necessarily help you lose weight faster, just it helps your health to eat better. :)

Your BRAIN runs on carbs. You need them. Eat complex carbs, like brown/wild rice, whole wheat bread and pasta. That saying, without them you will be mentally and physically sluggish.
Most people covered it... you need carbs. Your diet should be about 50% carbs.
The only slight truth I see in what you said is trying to eat less carbs at night. Not no carbs, just less carbs. Your body craves the carbs earlier in the morning and less as the day goes on.
Eat the good carbs, the whole wheats, in proper portions and you will be fine.

The only thing that will "make" you fat is consuming more calories than you burn.
Complex carbs from whole grains are very important to good nutrition. White bread doesn't provide the nutritional value or fiber of whole grain bread. Complex carbs are digested more slowly and will help you to feel satisfied with less. You also won't have the spike in energy, followed by a dip and hungry feeling, that you get after eating refined white flour.

I was an Atkins junkie for about 2 years. I stayed on the "induction" phase (meaning less than 20g carbs per day) for that long. Did I lose weight? You bet your booty I did -- and fast. Have I kept it off? Not a chance!
I couldn't even stand walking through the produce section of the market when I was eating severely low-carb, because all the fruits that were forbidden smelled so good! Instead, I was supposed to walk right past all those yummy whole grains and colorful, natural fruits and starchy veggies to the meat and dairy department, where I could buy a 2lb fat-marbled porterhouse steak on which I could melt 5tbsp of garlicky butter if I so desired. Now HOW can THAT be healthy????
I feel so much better living on the fruits, veggies, lean meats, low-fat dairy, and whole grains that I'm living on now. My body feels better, my mind feels better, all of it. And, I've lost 9 lbs in the past 2 1/2 weeks -- nothing to sneeze at there!

Just look at vegans. All we eat are carbs! Of course, they are usually
the complex carbohydrates, such as veggies, fruits, and whole grains.
Most vegans are typically lean, and a lot of studies have proven the
vegan diet to be excellent for weight loss, without any calorie
deficit. I would say just based on that, go for all the complex carbs
you want!! Carbs are not bad for you, just eat the right kind.
I've been on Atkins for 9 weeks and have lost 36 lbs. Thats about 4 lbs a week! A Low carb diet, has for me, been a very sucessful diet. Basically you need to be aware of your carb intake; especially refined suger. You'd be suprised the number of meat products that have suger added. Lots of meats are cured in sugar. Most sauces have sugar. Fast food is the biggest trouble-maker, they actually mix cane sugar into the hamburger. It's notjust about counting calories. Its the right calories. Atkins isnt all bacon and steak. From day one you have to eat lots of veggies (nutrient dence carbs). The key to low carb is avoiding processed foods with sugar, and that aint easy. It's worked for me (and I have a massive sweet tooth); It's just not somthing you do half-assed, You dont just say; OK, no more bread, I'll just not eat carbs anymore. It dosent work that way. Carbs are sneaky, You might not know your even eatting them. You follow the regime and then ease your way back to eating normal (armed with the knowlage of whats in your food).
