Lets All Walk to Puerto Rico!
One of my new friends, itislucia, had a marvelous idea. Doing all that walking - whether at the mall, the neighborhood, or the treadmill - might as well take you some place. She suggested Puerto Rico, so that's where we are going! Virtually of course.
So, I went to http://www.convertunits.com which very handily calculated the distance for me. I chose flight miles. Total distance between Houston and Puerto Rico - 1,997.
She and I have a head start as we started this week, so you'd better walk lots and catch up with us!
This week I neglected to get a pedometer and can only accurately record the miles I walked in the mall (must remember to get pedometer this weekend or itislucia will beat me).
Join everyone at Mindful Eating in the Exercise Forum as we walk to Puerto Rico!
Figure out the miles. Then copy and paste the mile tracker below into your post. How far can you walk? How long will it take you? It's ok to lap me a few times, but I've already got plans to increase my distance! Report in as often as you like. No rules!

This will be fun! My husband won't be so happy when I tell him we need to walk 10 miles a day in order to keep up with you Jannid!!
Total miles to walk to Puerto Rico - 2083

How much father to go - 2000 - oops, 2083
Oooops! I meant to say I do 10 recordable miles a week!!! My goal is to add another 5 miles. So I'll get a pedometer and see if just my normal running all over the place adds some and then maybe ramp up the speed at the mall (bowling over all those slow young people as I go) and increase from 2 miles to 2.5 per day! I've never been to Puerto Rico. Maybe after we all get there we can walk to Malaysia and visit Meryl!
Not your oops, my joke!! Sorry, the humor was lost in translation!! My husband would NOT walk 10 miles per day with me, unless we were in Yosemite!
3285 miles from San Diego to Puerto Rico AND then the perimeter of the island is 360 miles.
Hi:):)
My profile says San Diego but I have already moved to Puerto Rico - to live with my parents - we get along well and while there are hot and humid days generally the days are comfortably pretty:) AND the scenery is beautiful. WHEN I have "arrived here" I will change my profile AND hopefully by then I will know how to upload some pictures:):)
I am walking in the mornings at the gym - in air conditioning:) - on a treadmill - my goal in the mornings - Mon - Fri - is for calories burned. Currently I am doing 700 calories burned and hope to up it in two weeks to 800. In the afternoon I generally walk 5 miles - a bit slower - but then I am going to distance.
This week I have walked 85 miles - in my journal I logged it on a daily basis and then I summarize it on a weekly basis.
AND THANK YOU for walking to Puerto Rico:):) I look forward to posting and reading your posts:):) Best wishes for an excellent evening and a happy tomorrow:):)

So... does this mean I get to sit on my behind and wait for everyone to come to me? ![]()

No. This means that you can virtually fly to Houston and start walking - try to catch up with me! I've only gone 10 miles and the way you walk all over in KL you are likely much faster than I. Shouldn't take you long to catch up.
Your starting mileage is 1997.

Happy Sunday everyone:):)
I will be starting my walks again tomrrow morning - after having taken a wonderful weekend break:):) The heat and humidity have been very high and I am GLAD I will start my walk tomorrow morning in an air conditioned gym:):)
Wishing you all a wonderful day:):)
It's 3,212 miles or 2,791 nautical miles from where I live but my pedometer doesn't count accurately so I would be sunk even if I could walk, which has been recently eliminated by doc.
Good luck to ya'll and I'll be watching to see who gets there first.![]()
I am so sorry to hear that your doc has said no walking.
You can join in whenever you are able...and I'll pretend I've been carrying you on my back the whole time and you can begin with my numbers!
The long walk for me is after fun in sunny Puerto Rico. We're walking to visit Meryl! Party in Malaysia!
Hi:)
It sounds like we are going to have YEARS of walking with FUN time:):) Let the good times walk!!!!:):)
AND I did 4 miles at the gym this morning - burned 800 calories:):) - and hope to do an afternoon walk - weather permitting - this afternoon.
I was thinking about the miles to walk and I realized that this is something that will not be done in a few months -- WOW!! this really is incorporating a lifetime change:):) AND that is good:):) I LOVE the idea of walking from Puerto Rico to Malaysia .... we are going round the world with friends!!!:):)
I hope everyone had an EXCELLENT weekend and I wish you all a wonderful day:):) Hugs and happiness:)

Being mindful about exercise is incorporating it into your every day life! I rather like the idea of walking around the world with friends. .
Some of you may want to run instead of walk, or climb stair steppers (2000 steps to a mile).
I walked a bit this weekend as part of my regular doing of stuff

Happy Monday to you all!
itislucia, thanks to you and jannid for organizing this walk. I have been to Puerto Rico, though I cannot claim to have walked there! Thanks, too, for recognizing the commitment we've made out loud, so to speak. For me, it truly is a lifetime commitment to a healthier me, and it's great to be sharing the journey with all of you!
Oh, darn, meryl, I didn't think this all the way through. I was imagining the fabulous, healthy feast with which you would greet us upon our arrival in Malaysia...but that won't happen if you're joining jannid on the road!
mischiefdm, I'm also sorry to hear your doc has banned walking. I don't walk as fast (or as much!) as jannid, but I'd be glad to help out as well.

Hi:):)
I was able to do my afternoon walk -- so another 5 miles for today:):)
AND you know I was thinking that the walk from Puerto Rico to Malaysia is a bit more than 10,700 miles - did not realize it was so far ... I am now starting to look at the google world maps to visualize what I am doing:):)...
AND that was when it hit me this REALLY is a lifetime commitment. I read the previous posts and THANK YOU for reinforcing it. I guess I was just thinking I would get this done ...and then what? AND NOW I KNOW what...:):) Yeah.!!!
AND it also reminds me of that proverb - A long journey begins with the first step -
AND it is wonderful ... we are not doing this alone:):) THANK YOU for the company:):)

3 miles yesterday!
In about 34 more miles I will have to start the worst part of my trip - the swim longways across the Gulf of Mexico. I knew I should have chosen the over land miles...mischief, can you swim? I can't, so this might be a problem.
How about if we row across? Good for the arms as well as the cardiovascular system. Or we could take a cruise ship and use the treadmill!!!! Yes, that's the answer. I will be on a cruise ship in just 34 more miles!
Yes, it's a long walk, but I hear the food is quite good in Puerto Rico.

Hi:):)
I LOVE the idea of a cruise ship with treadmill!!!:):) THAT is JUST fabulous!!!!!
I am walking cross country BUT when I get to Miami I will do the same thing:):) Right now I am walking towards Arizona - that is what I visualize when I am doing these walks:):)
I have used mapquest for driving directions - which also gives mileage. From San Diego to Miami, it is 2657 miles. I think if I break it down like this. It won't seem so overwhelming for me
AND I am going to post this on a separate journal so I can keep track of this trip:):) AND then as I reach the mileage walked I will highlight how far I have gone:):) When I get to Miami THEN I will do the remaining mileage on the cruise ship with the treadmill:):)
You know -- I have sometimes wanted to REALLY walk across the country but never actually put aside "real life" to do it AND now I am doing it virtually AND physically:):) This is very cool:):)
I walked 5 miles this afternoon:) Thankfully it was not too hot or humid:):)
AND all is well - life is calm and that is good:):) Wishing you all a wonderful evening and a happy tomorrow:):)

Are you folks wearing pedometers all day long or just when walking for exercise? I might put mine on to see what adds up for normal day.
I found my old pedometer but it was dead. I wore it at work some time ago at a time when we walked for lunch, way less than a mile. I was able to achieve 7-8k steps per day w/o any problem. With the current two miles at lunch, and with 2k steps counting as about a mile, I decided to arbitrarily add one mile to my luncheon mileage. When I get a new pedometer (can't figure out how to get the back off of the thing to see if it's got a battery, oh well, it was free), I'll use it and log all those miles. I'll probably increase another mile on some days if I do that.
Wear your pedometer and count every step! ![]()
Hi:):)
I use my pedometer as a watch:):) have not been able to figure out how to count the steps and figure any extra walking - at the stores when I am food shopping - I do during the day is just normal activity.
The treadmill at the gym logs distance along with calories burned, speed, time etc. AND my for my afternoon walk I used the car and drove the distance I walk so I KNOW how far point A is to point B to point C and back again and where I can add the miles (between point B and C) when I want to do more walking.
AND I walked 4 more miles at the gym this morning - burning another 800 calories:):) This is so cool:):) I have a morning routine that I enjoy:):) and works into my day so well. It starts it off nicely and positively:)
I also enjoy seeing these numbers decreasing:):) The mileage really does add up:)

Wishing you all a WONDERFUL and HAPPY day:):)
Thursday morning :)
I did another 3 miles this morning at the gym - I decided to begin to use the elliptical and see if I can actually do it a decent time for a decent calorie deficit. I lasted 5 mins and burned 40 calories - I started at level 1 and worked my way up to level 4 and stopped -- it is REALLY different from the treadmill - where I did my 3 miles and burned 600 calories.
So I am going to alternate between these two machines - starting with the elliptical and seeing about improving performance and finishing off with the treadmill. I want to do at least 3 miles each morning and hopefully achieving 4.
It rained last night so no afternoon walk -- I was so glad I had gone to the gym in the morning:):)
