For all you Walmart haters out there...
Check it out. Their lower prices help poor and middle class urban types like me afford healthy food. People like me who lived in an urban area that had nothing but Whole Foods, posh personal shopping services, fancy caterers and 7-11s understood this, but now there is a published study on it.
froth, if you run one of those tangy apples on her fair trade organic bread, you might piss her off enough!

Hey. In all fairness, Froth...I only whip out my baton when it's absolutely necessary. Otherwise, I prefer to wear plain clothes and mingle with the commonfolk :p
But I digress...Back to the subject at hand. Betty, have you been able to find any other studies about this subject?
to tell you the truth, I have not read any other studies on this particular aspect of the topic (presence of walmart = lower obesity rates) but I am kind of associated with the people who did this (in a 6 degrees of separation, not my best friend and would not recognize them if I saw them kind of way). I kind of doubt they were employed by Walmart to conduct this study.
I would love to see more on this topic. Besides, I am a complete nerd and love to read stuff like this. Yes, I am officially boring! I also go to bed at 9pm these days.
Are you kidding? Get over it.
You like Wal-Mart... many of us don't. That one lousy study isn't going to miraculously change people's minds.
Did you read it Allie?
i'm tempted to do my own study: go down to walmart with my digital camera and take a picture of every ass that goes through the door. i'll use the wide angle lens.
hey pg, do and write a paper on it. I'll read it!
except, I expect a full report on who funded your camera purchase ;)
I suspect you would see a higher number of obese people because poverty is correlated with obesity and since Walmart appeals to low income and low-middle income shoppers you would see the characteristics typical of that socioeconomic class appear there. So that the instance of taking photos at Walmart, it's one of those correlation does not equal cause type of situations. All this paper does is bust up that "common sense" belief that Walmart makes you fat.
PG - you are too funny. Hehe. :)
in fact,
*weeps a little*
I never learned how to read!!!!
*sobs*
that's ok forthbeast
-pats on back-
I can read the Walmart brand nutritional information for you.
hahaha
I'm not positive but I think Wal-Mart was one of the first to provide Hurricane Katrina victims with food and water for free. Everybody rags on them but they're not that bad. The one by me is kinda dirty but then again, all the stores by me are dirty....
^5's sun123!
So?
Corporations don't have hearts - they have PR departments, and the objective of the PR department is to work within their budget to win the support of consumers. It's called business.
Split- sounds like a win/win situation
Corporations aren't altruistic entities by any means trendstudent - the ultimate objective of the PR Department is to win sufficient public support to increase sales enough to not only compensate for the donation, but to realize a profit.
