where is all this weight????

Quote  |  Reply

Hey everyone.

So, I got on my scale again today and it said 200lbs...but I don't understand where all the weight is! I'm a size 14 and I wear juniors tops in L. I'm not trying to brag here at all..I just don't understand how the scale could say such a high number for me since I'm only five foot four...

could it possibly be wrong? It just doesn't make sense to me...I've shown some of my online friends pictures of me at my current weight and they all tell me to stop losing because I'm already too thin. I've got bigger hips then I would like...but I just don't feel like i'm 200 pounds. I wonder what size I will be when I am down to my recommended 130lbs?

Should I just go buy a new scale or something or am I possibly really 200lbs???

Sara,

Muscle is 5x denser than fat.  I weigh a lot, but my muscle accounts for the high weight.

Judge yourself by what you look like in the mirror, or if your clothes feel tight at the waistline, then you are gaining weight.

no offense but it could be denial of your true size. there are plenty of people wearing the wrong sized clothing.

(hence the muffin top being so common)

also, height, of course, plays a huge factor. if you are tall, 200 pounds will look slimmer than if you are short.

LOL! no, I see what you mean, but I'm not about to muffin top my way into clothes, if I have to struggle to get it on I'm not wearing it! I'm only five foot four...which is another reason I'm surprised the scale says I weigh so much...but I suppose it could be muscle, thats not to say I'm not chunky and in need of weight loss! I just don't think 200lbs is accurate.

Are you sure you're a size 14? I'm 5'4" and 130 lbs and I'm a size 4 and S in tops... I don't squeeze into jeans either. Maybe you are a smaller size and just don't realize it?

Keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat. If you work out a lot than that is probably the reason.

Just make sure you are being honest with yourself. It doesn't sound like you are underweight or too skinny unless you are VERY muscular.

If you want an accurate scale you should check with your doctor. Their scales are always correct.

Wow.  I can't wear a large in juniors tops, usually.  (It's the boobs.)  My assumption is that your scale is dysfunctional.  Or that you have muscle.  Hey, if you look good...but I know we all want that little number.  Personally I feel the same way about myself.  *shrugs*  Maybe we just have good self esteem.

Kizzichan...

Maybe thats it!

I'm still going to try to get that number to go down, but I think I might purchase a new scale...better safe than sorry! I guess alot of it could be that I don't carry much weight in my face or arms, so it's hard to see it in pictures....well..that and I have always had an hourglass figure.

Sara

sadly sometimes the number on the scale is the true weight but it still doesnt  look much like it. Same thing happens to my mom. she's 5'4 and she weighs 164, and when she found out she thougth she weighed around 145, which was her last weight....to her surprised she had gained 20 pounds that to her seem to just slip on her without her being aware...it wasnt until she saw herself in the mirror and truely analized her body that she saw where the weight had settled in.

If you still think 200 is too hight try another scale...dont buy another one, just ask a friend or somebody who may have one that is working for them, and weigh urself completely naked and in the morning right after waking up (no drinking anything or eating anything...not even brushed your teeth) remember, weight after even drinking water is inaccurate...so weighing yourself at night or with clothes on is not an accurate weight because its all the stuff you have on you and in you at that moment.

if it still makes u uncomfortable then go ahead and buy yourself a new one.

hopefully it is broken :)

take care

Well, it would help a lot if you had pictures of more than just your face on your profile! :-)

But along the same lines, I am at 160 and I am skinnier than a lot of my friends.  For me, its muscle, and although I don't look like it, people are usually suprised to hear what size clothes I wear (11/12 in jeans, M is short sleeve shirts, L in long sleeve, etc) because they imagine I would be wearing smaller.

I bet that as the number goes down, you'll realize more and more about your body

i can absolutely attest to the fact that 200# looks different on different people, even ones that are about the same height. my best friend has been dieting for a while and was totally excited when she got down to 200. while i am VERY happy for her it really threw me for a loop because when i started here i was 195 and i know she's still WAY bigger on the bottom side than i was.

talked with my hubby about it and he said "if she got up and did something some of that fat might turn into muscle" (he's not very subtle).

i've always weighed more that people think and now i'm sure it's because of muscle. we always talk about muscle being heavier than fat (per square inch that is), but i had never thought about it the other way around, fat takes up more space.

I agree with satyrswoman. 200 lbs can look different on everyone. Why do you assume your scale is broken? It could be that you have alot of muscle, true, or maybe you just carry your weight differently than someone else of that height and weight. I don't think a size 14 is too thin. Maybe instead of buying a new scale, just get a measuring tape and track your measurements instead. The scale can give you an idea, but measurements don't lie.

it could be muscle, and everyone has their weight distributed differently. Someone above mentioned they are 5'4" 130 and a size 4. I was a size 4 when i was 118 (I am 5'4") and i am now around 131 and a size 8... so its different for everyone.

LOL! All I have on my computer are a bunch of face shots I took with my webcam, but I see your point.

Also, I suppose I could be reading it wrong, it's not digital, it;'s one of those spinning ones that stops after a while....I think I may sneak a look at my weight at my mothers house on her scale...if it's wayyy off I'm getting a new one! I don't want to constantly guess if my weight is wrong.

Thanks guys/girls

Sara

even when I was 220 (my highest) I could still fit in to a lot of juniors clothes...I think some of us just carry weight differently. I am pretty perfectly proportional...I don't mean to be bragging, but it's true, cuz I have the hourglass figure...at ANY weight.....but that can be bad, too. I'm 178 now and I fit into the same clothes as I did at 200/210.

I'm not saying this is you, but I was in denial big time at my peak weight. I looked in the mirror and didn't think I looked fat. But the scale doesn't lie and when I got to the point where I started pushing size 16, I decided I didn't want to get a new wardrobe a size larger so I changed my eating habits. 18 months and 38 lbs later I look at pictures of myself from back then and I can't believe how fat I was. - And I totally didn't see it at the time. Weird...

You can certainly check your scale.. it could be the problem.  It could also be that's really what you weigh.

I'm 5'4" and when I was 200lbs I was in 14/16s.  In fact, it was only when I started getting into the low 160s (alas, that was years ago...) that 14s were juuuust starting to be too big.  (I have huge hips and a big butt, though.. so that doesn't help.)

The same weight can look different on lots of people depending on their general shape.  I see people who weigh less than me on the Biggest Loser and I think I look skinnier than them, even though I'm 20lbs heavier.  It's all a matter of how you carry it.  (And I don't know their heights, so that could play a factor too...)

I'm with you, though.. If I carry my weight this well at 220, I really wonder how I'm going to look once I start hitting 140/130.
