what do you think of Alli--the new fat blocker?

Quote  |  Reply
Okay, so FDA approved Alli is the new OTC fat blocker and talk of the morning news shows.  I was wondering your opinions.

You are suppose to be eating a low fat diet and exercising, and then this will boost the loss.  It works in your digestive system and not the heart or brain is affected.  BUT...if you eat high fats...you have nasty ..and umm....possibly messy side effects.

I was just wondering what others thought about it.

i went to their web site and checked that out...they reccomend you stay home during the first few days or bring a change of pants to work...gross! The drug sounds great...but uncontrolled pooh? i'd rather be fat! lol!
I'm not interested in taking anything that offers those kind of side effects. I figure that can't be too healthy.
There is no magic pill!  It's just another ploy to entice those who don't want to do the work!  The money spent on this research could have been better spent of reseaching something really beyond our control like cancer...

But I'm usre the industy will make a fortune...it's all a $$$ thing, there is no humanity .
Good Morning America reviewed it. Seems that there is no leanancy on the diet end. Consuming fatty foods while taking it results in diarehha and stomach cramping. The product itself suggests carrying an extra pair of underwear for the liquid pooh spills. As with ANYTHING, without proper diet and exercise the product is worthless. Its test showed an additional mere 2 lb weight loss over a year as compared to a sensible healthy lifestyle. Not to mention its like $55.00 per month.

Nope, no magic pill people.
Disgusting pill, is more like it...
I just read up on it.  It really doesn't do much at all, just blocks a little bit of the fat you eat.  it won't help you lose weight unless you start eating sensibly.  Why not just eat sensibly and eat less fat in the first place?  Thanks, but I'm not giving my money to a rich pharmaceutical company.
Anul leakage!  No thanks!  Having more fun doing it the healthy way!
It disgusts me that there are probably hundreds of thousands of people that are going to buy into this scam. When will people get it- There IS a guaranteed way to lose weight out there. DIET AND EXCERCISE.
From what I've read, the drug can help people lose up to 50% more weight than dieting and exercising alone - that is, if you lose 50 lbs. on your own, the drug could help you lose another 25 (for a total of 75.) I don't think this is for everybody (and those side effects are nasty, nasty) but this might help some people. If you go on the drug, you still have to eat a low fat diet and exercise. I think that anybody that can lose weight on their own shouldn't take a drug, but there are some people out there who have tried a lot of stuff and are still overweight. Who knows if this could be the way for some people to lose the weight (and learn better habits) once and for all.
Looks like mostly its a placebo -- that apparently makes you poo uncontrollably!  Yikes.  I say its useless.

I have seen their propganda on You Tube and to loose weight successfully, guess what they recommend?  Cut calories and fat from diet and then... dun, dun, dun... excersize!

Nothing new under the sun.
You know, after reading a lot of this stuff... the only thing that kept coming to mind was.... Holy C&$()!!!  Sorry!!!!

Now, that said, I take my weight smart vitamin every morning and some green tea as well.  Hey, I need all the help I can get.  But I will NOT, I repeat NOT, take something that recommends I carry extra undergarments!!  Thanks... I'll just be fat....LOL

It saddens me that as a society we have fallen on the idea that there is a magic pill for everything.  Medical advanced are a wonderful thing and have saved many lives, but they aren't magic, and anything that promises magic should be avoided!
If I could stop eating those foods, I wouldn't need the pill!
As a society?  Please speak for yourself.

dont take this pill!!! I tried the presciption form two years ago, xenical, from a friend who got a bottle of it from her weight loss clinic - i'm pretty sure she wasnt informed fully of the side effects. We both had a slice of pizza afterwards and the next day was sooo horrible...i was still in college so being in class was not fun. And if you think oily poo is bad, wait till you get a wiff of the smell of it.

Ok, so we werent suppose to eat pizza...but no one told us that we were suppose to eat a low fat diet or else we get these horrendous side effects. We thought the pill's job was to block the fat...and we were craving pizza. Soo...i'm guessing i'll see many plp running for the bathroom with a new pair of pants every 5 mins since most people will probably do exactly what we did thinking that this pill will offset the effects of pizza.
Wait, so azhangie, you took someone elses prescription drug, which is not only dangerous but illegal, and ate pizza, which the directions of the use of the pill say not to eat fatty foods, and you are complaining that you pooped a lot?

I am not advocating any magic pill, but if you use something AS DIRECTED and precribed TO YOU, then maybe it would do more good than harm.

This pill must be doing something right is the FDA approved it, and it must have some PROVEN results if the FDA approved it, and if I was to take any pill, this alli would be it.

People should choose to use or not use this supplement according to their own needs and should obviously not use it if they can't refrain from eating fatty foods after taking it.

This pill could help millions of people, as a diet AID, not a replacement for diet and exercise, it has never been marketed as a magic pill.
Placebo or no placebo some ppl just need a lil kick in the butt to get them going if this pill will make ppl think they are not hungry long enough for them to get on the habit of eating healthy y not! As was said already it is fda approved and im sure its not for all ppl but if you have no willpower some things like this do tend to work out......Its not for me im losing the weight through a wonderful chance in my eating patterns and i study what puts weight back on me and what doesnt and i joined the gym and have lost quite a bit of weight and continue to do so. But i dont think i would discourage someone from taking this diet aid if they really think it will motivate them to go on a more slimming menu during the day and get out and exercise.
First off, I think azhangie was just offering her experience and could probably do without your holier than thou speech, as could we all. Second, I'm sure the Fen Fen users took their prescription AS DIRECTED and a lot of good it did them. Just because the FDA approved something, doesn't mean it's perfectly safe.  And just because it was prescribed doesn't mean it couldn't do you harm.  Was a longitudinal study done on this drug?  Do we know the long term effects say across 25 years?  I don't think so.  So because Alli is FDA approved, you'd take that over say Green Tea supplements, which aren't FDA approved?
As I said, I am not advocating ANYTHING, so I don't think I was holier-than -thou. I just think that anyone that is dumb enough to take someone elses prescription (which is twice the dose of the OTC alli) shouldn't be giving advice.

I wouldn't take any OTC medications that weren't FDA approved, I don't even know if I would take any that ARE.

If you want to use medication, use it as presribed or as directed, then talk to me about side effects.
whats worse taking a diet pill for a limited amount of time and maybe losing some weight could have some side affects but most of the time if your not on them longterm they dont affect you seriously...or being obese and having heart disease diabetes and all the other things that go along with it!
Like I said, I think she was just offering up an experience, not necessarily advice. And she makes a good point at the end, just like gastro by pass surgery... you will have a lot of people not follow the diet and exercise recommendations just looking for an easy way out.

You make a good point angie but who knows how taxing this pill is on your heart.  Being obese AND taking a pill that is potentially dangerous probably significantly increases your chances of a heart attack.  I have this funny Ted Nugent-esque philosophy... I trust plant extracts much more than I would synthetic pharmaceuticals mass produced by a company that has already made more money than they know what to do with. I have no problem with a little green tea to give you a boost but oily rings in my toilet just do not sound natural.
