Almond butter vs. Peanut butter
I've never tried it before, so when I do, does anyone have any good tips on what to use it on or with?
1. Almond butter vs. peanut butter
Almond butter is a great alternative to the run-of-the-mill peanut butter that you're used to slathering on your toast. Although peanut butter is a good source of protein, it is also filled with hydrogenated oils and sugar. Almond butter is a much better choice because it contains no added ingredients or preservatives. Almond butter is simply made of almonds, crushed up and smoothed into a delicious spread. Almond butter is a good source of protein; it's packed with monounsaturated fats, which are good for the heart, and helps to control blood sugar. It can be found in the health food section of most grocery stores.
And from here a comparison of peanut butter vs almond butter nutrition facts. However, that is from a website of a brand of almond butter, so it is obviously bias.
I don't know... Just yesterday I went shopping for peanut butter and there wasn't any. I considered getting the almond butter instead, but like momo I decided against it, when I saw the price was double that of peanut butter (this was a comparison of the freshly ground on the spot, straight from nuts, type of butters).
I didn't find anything online that makes me think picking one over the other is a better choice in terms of health. Both peanuts and almonds are healthy, and are good additions to one's diet. If anything, it would be good to alternate to get the benefits each provide.
If you want a change from peanut butter, I'd try cashew butter. The flavors are similar but cashew butter is a little more subtle. Almond butter can be sort of shocking for those just weaning off of pb ;-)
And for those lucky enough to live in the pacific NW, there's a company in California that distributes walnut butter to organic markets up and down the coast. Definitely worth looking into.
healthy wise its better than normal PB cos the stuff on teh shleves usually has salt and sugar added. I'm going to try cashew butter next
I just had some wtih a banana sandwhich. I love it with carrots tho!!
If its too expensive, make your own! :) I just needed the jar, so next time I will
"I've found that just because you like a nut, doesn't mean you'll like the butter. I like to eat raw almonds over peanuts but I prefer peanut butter."
That's weird, I'm the same way.
The problem with the article comparing almond butter to peanut butter is that it's assuming (without saying so) you're using commercial peanut butter with added ingredients. Natural peanut butter is available for cheap and it's only peanuts or peanuts and salt. No added anything else. I get a jar for about $2.50, though name brands can be more in the $4 range.
I rarely get almonds because they are so expensive. I grew up in almond orchards where you could eat them for free and I have hard time wrapping my brain around $6+/pound.
i've heard that almond butter is healthier than peanutbutter, but don't bet all your money on me haha.
i eat organic pumpkin seed butter. it has only 160 calories for 2 tbsp and 10 g of protein. a good choice in my opinion.
If the only ingredients are peanuts/almonds and salt, then it's like asking, "which is healthier--carrots or bell peppers?" They are both healthy in their own ways. Althought peanuts have more saturated fat, they contain antioxidants similar to those found in blueberries and raspberries.
So choose which ever one you like best, make your own or get a brand with natural ingredients or alternate between the two.
I think almond butter might have more omega 3 fatty acids or something like that (feel free to call me on this if i'm wrong, I just remember reading it somewhere).
My bf is allergic to peanuts, so we don't keep peanut butter in the house. We tried Whole Foods cashew butter, but it was expensive, very oily, and not really my style. I just recently discovered that the newly remodled King Soopers (also city market, kroger, whatever you want to call it) in my neighborhood has the freshly ground, crunchy almond butter for relatively cheap. It comes out of the machine all warm and delicious! Finding this almond butter has really changed our day to day lives! And it's soooo good. Use it on anything you would use PB on, plus it's great on croissants w/ jam as a tasty dessert/breakfast treat. I think it's a bit more versatile than PB.
I also find that the natural almond butter is less oily than natural cashew or natural peanut butter. I haven't been getting so deep a layer of oil that needs to be stired in every time I want to use it.
Hooray for almond butter!
I get my almond butter from Trader Joe's. Dee-lish! I also just bought for the first time Sunflower Seed Butter. It is sooooo good. Much closer to the tast of peanut butter.
I agree with muttlover. It's just the difference between eating a peanut or an almond. Almond butter isn't necessarily healthier or better for you, it just has the nutritional benefits of an almond. Peanut butter has the nutritional benefits of a peanut. Some would argue that almonds are healthier than peanuts, but some might disagree.
