My mother picked up Dry Roasted Almonds. She said there was something good in it that we don't normally get (she forgot what it was called). So what's the deal with these nuts?

Almonds are the most healthiest of all the nuts. It is best to get blanched white almonds (without skin, because the skin is poison). If you soak almonds overnight in a glass of water, it will double their nutritional value, because they start to sprout.
Here is a link to why Almonds are so good for you:

?? Here I am munching away on natural almonds with the brown skin on, thinking I'm doing good and I find out the skin is poisonous??? Why don't they tell us these things??
try organic almonds! they are soo much better tasting! I was not a fan of almonds when had the generic commercial almonds (planters & co) telling you, well worth the extra money!

ix--The link you gave states that the skins are actually healthful. What's up with poison? Anything I can read about that?

I am sure that almonds skins have some nutritional properties. Here is the information I found:
"Not only do apple seeds contain cyanogens, precursors to cyanide, but peach pits, almond skins, citrus fruits and some berrys contain them as well."
I think you're fine if you have 1 oz per day (24-28 almonds). But if you are having 1/4 cup or more everyday, then perhaps you might want to reconsider. I like the taste of blanched almonds better and can find them at my local (3 hour drive, one way) health food store.

Almonds are very healthy for you in moderation. They have a lot of heart healthy monounsaturated fat, fiber, vitamins, protein and the brown skins have lots of antioxidents. There's more info at Almonds Are In. Though you should really eat the raw, unroasted kind(I eat Blue Diamond Growers raw natural brand), they're supposed to have more antioxidents and stuff (that's what the doctor on Oprah said at least)
Umm.. the comment that placing them in water overnight is completely false.. How can something duble ints nutrients just from being placed in water.. If anything it has a higher water content. And since water doesn't have "nutrition" besides the fact that it hydrates, almonds can't double their nutrients just from water. Nihil dare possit quod non habet! (Nothing is able to give that which it does not have)
Since when did the skin become poisonous? I'm pretty sure that household almonds have HARMLESS skin... It's the bitter almonds that get imported from Asia that are dangerous... Eating 20 of them is considered a lethal dose...
But your average everyday almonds are perfectly safe...

Childersa, I think they are referring to sprouted seeds. When a seed sprouts, the nutritional value skyrockets. that's why bean sprouts, alfalfa sprouts etc are so good for you. I doubt very much that an almond would sprout overnight. And if it's been roasted or processed in any way, it surely won't. So I think you're right.
Actually, only the skin of the Bitter almonds which are used primarily for Almond Oil as well as their medicinal effectiveness are poisonous and as such are only poisonous in very large doses. The almonds that you are more than likely eating are Sweet Almonds as opposed to Bitter Almonds. Also, be certain to get raw almonds in the interest of avoiding extra oil used in the roasting process.
where canb i find the research that organic almond skin are poisen?
