I would like to start a motivation group for those that already fall within a healthy BMI but looking to lose those last few pounds and/or get in shape.

I didn't read this entire thread, so if this advice is a repeat, I apologize, but anyone who's within ten to fifteen pounds of their goal weight(sorry I don't prescribe to the crap that is BMI), the best answer is a ketogenic diet, and there is none better than Militant Bodyopus, by Dan Duchaine.  I knew Dan for years, when I was involved in bodybuilding and powerlifting, and it's a huge loss, that he's gone, but his book is the definitive way for people who aren't fat, wanting to achieve that finish to their diet.

 Bodyopus : Card catalog description
"...learn what the world's top bodybuilders do to get lean and ripped--from thermogenic aids, thyroid hormone, and anti-catabolics to protein selection and macronutrient ratios...includes the top 50 drugs for dieting and a special section on diuretics for bodybuilding competitions"-- Back cover

Not interested. Really, really not interested.

I agree with Chirs on this idea - Thanks but No Thanks Curt.

hmmm... that's a negative on the book... I think I'm doing just fine without..

just finished jogging :) it's beautiful outside and glad I got to enjoy the weather. I didn't go to class (school is downtown and there is a concert *avril lavene >:( * tonight.. outrageous parking prices and traffic... no thanks) so now it was well worth it ;)

doggies4life- sounds like you are doing everything right! Keep up the great work and you'll reach your goals in no time!

I'm a little late, but this group is totally me:

Age: 19
Height: 5'4
Weight: 122
BMI: 20.9

Basically my goal is to just be happy with the way I look/feel.  I want to feel comfortable in my clothes and be confident in a bikini (lol)

Room for one more?

I'm Scottish, 5"8, 41yrs, BMI 22.7 and as of this morning 150lb I'm aiming at the moment for the low 140's. I guess I would be classed as an emotional "not" eater...in that if I'm stressed or just feeling a bit blue my calorie intake drops away...since joining CC I have been combating that by setting a small alarm clock to remind myself to eat and it seems to be working a treat.

Ann

I'm 5"6 and 145-150, so Im very close to being overweight. I want to get down to 130-ish.

I think its good to have a seperate group for our type... because losing the last 5-15 pounds is a totally different challenge.

I went from 200 lbs to 160 no problem but then everything changed.

The problem is a lot of us are probably close to/at our "set point", aka where our body wants us to be, and especially for us women our body likes us to have some extra fat for childbearing. When your fighting your body over vanity pounds its so much harder. Everytime I get down to 135, I cant maintain it and go back up.

Has anyone succesfully conquered their battle against their "set point"? And if so, HOW?

Hey, Ann, I know you!

For the third of third or forth time in a week I've been four pounds OVER my last point on chart. It must be real. Poop. My food/activity loggin shows a deficit for nearly every day except about 5 days over Easter. Those days were over but not by even 3500 cals let alone 14,000! This MUST mean that my daily burn is less than I have been using.

Before anyone jumps in about 'starvation mode', I've been using 1770 (per CC 'moderately active') as my burned/day and 1370 as my target.  According to several online calcs, my BMR is about 1300. I should be losing pretty slowly - a little less than a pound a week.

SO, I will have to lower my intake just a bit (I don't want to go too low and knowing no better, I use the 1200 as an absolute minimum) and increase my exercise considerably. (Once I get my exercise up I will probably readjust my calories up to my current ~1400). I'm being convinced that I really need to build some muscle, as well. I think my age and lack of muscle are the most likely reasons for my low burn rate.

Chris~ I have been running into the problem.  I have been stuck in my rut since just after Christmas.  I have tried going up in calories, down in calories.  Maybe some strength training might help get your body with the program.  I have the CC burn set at sedentary and then add in whatever activity I do that day.

My weight continues to flux in that 141-142 range even though I have been running supposed 750 calorie deficits everyday.  Not sure where to go from here.  Guess I will just keep trucking along and hope the scale moves at some point.

Curt,

I sure don't pretend to speak for others, but as for myself, I really don't want a 'diet'. (Although because I am intentionally restricting my calories I guess I'm technically on one.) I want to eat a variety of healthy foods like I will be eating for the rest of my life. I just want to watch portions so that I end up and stay at my goal weight.  Thanks for the info though. Interesting that most references involved epilepsy.

Chris

No problem.  To be honest, the number of PM's I have gotten from this thread, asking me for more info on this diet, makes me very happy.  The level of commitment and dedication involved is high, but the payoff is worth it, IMO.

I'm in the same boat, CC says that I should eat 1200 at a sedentary level to lose 0.8pds per week. I did that for the first few weeks and then someone in another post started talking about eating their minimum BMR, so I checked mine and it is 1380. For the last 2 weeks I've been doing a zigzag thing where I eat as much as 1700 cals on one day and as low as 1140 on another. It's been working for me so far, but maybe that's because I've been more active, doing weights and cardio everyday. Not really sure how it all works, to be honest. Still losing slowly, but losing. I

I try not to think of it as only losing less than 1 pd per week, but if I keep with it, by this time next month, I'll weigh nearly 4 pds less.

More interesting reading:

"Daniel "Dan" Duchaine was an amateur bodybuilder, trainer and author. Called The Steroid Guru, Duchaine wrote the following books:

The Original Underground Steroid Handbook, 1981.
Underground Steroid Handbook, 1983.
Underground Steroid Handbook II, 1988.

These books were supposed to show the safe use of anabolic steroids, yet the author died before the age of 50!

Duchaine also wrote "Underground Body Opus: Militant Weight Loss & Recomposition" in 1996, with this book he concentrated more on diet and training and I think he was trying to show that he finally learned that it's best to keep away from drugs and just stick to hard work, proper diet and supplements.

Dan's knowledge on diet, training and supplements was ahead of it's time and if you can get you hands on a copy of "Body Opus", it's a great read. But his advise on steroids must be taken with the knowledge, that he and almost every other steroid expert have died way too young."

Can't say that the Bodyopus is too much different than some of the other odd ball diets I've read about. It might be worth a try to get off my now 4 month plateau but don't think I could handle the exhaustive exercise on Fridays.

And the saga continues.. I didn't make March wt. loss goal showing 0.2 loss yesterday and today a 1.5 loss!Surprised Oh well, I might make April's goal of 4#.

Hey Everyone,

Does anyone have the problem of people constantly saying 'you're already thin enough your just being stupid! Stop trying to lose weight'?

I'm 18 and weigh 133lbs but want to get to about 120 which is still a healthy weight within the BMI scale. I just wondered how you lot coped? And if you think its just jealousy of friends because they are worried you'll look better then them?

Please help! xXx

Dan was a genius.  I was glad to have known him.  As for Bodyopus, it's hard damn work.  The diet and workout is brutal at times. But for me, I used it, when I would prep for a bodybuilding competition, or to hit weight for a powerlifitng comp. or to trim up quick, for a triathlon, and it always seemed to work for me.  I've always thought if someone just wanted to apply diet only for a couple weeks at a time, it would be a great plateau buster.

I think people missed what Dan wrote on topics like workout and diet, because of all the talk about steroids, but he trained tons of drug free bodybuilders, and that's part of where so much of this came from.  Dan also developed the Isometric Diet, which is the basis for the Zone Diet that is so popular.  Great diet to maintain quality muscle mass.

A nice read about Dan...

There are probably a number of reasons people do that, but it doesn't really matter why as long as one is truly not becoming dangerously obsessed.

My best advice is to just not mention anything about calories, fats, wanting to lose weight, etc. to almost anyone. In the first place, nobody wants to hear about it - it's boring! Lol! If you don't mention it, not many people will comment on just seeing you with healthy stuff on your plate. If someone does, just say something like "I try to eat healthy but you should have seen what I had yesterday!" Then change the subject.

Heyy

5'6, 125, I think my BMI's somewhere around 20.5.

Lookin to loose about eight pounds more?
Already lost quite some weight since last year, when I weighed in at 148.

Hi lonelyrose, you sound like my twin! I am also 5'6", 124, BMI 20.2, wanting to get down to between 110-115. Thats an awesome weight loss! Do you find it harder and slower going now that you're getting closer to your goal?

FINALLY, another drop!  I'm down to 141.5 after eating half a pineapple and it being the TOM.  SO close to my goal for the month!  If it drops down to 140 by the 5th I'll count it as goal met ;)

Got re-motivated this weekend when my dad showed me his cholesterol levels: 169!!  My dad is almost 71 and his cholesterol is 41 points better than me!  I'm only 22!  It's so not fair.  I can't wait to go to the dr. this summer and see what my levels are after cutting WAY back on booze!  But being reminded that my dad (who's had a heart attack before) has better cholesterol than me is a pretty darn good motivator!

That's great Josielynn ! Hope you lower your cholesterol too but cutting WAY back on booze isn't going to do it.  I got mine down by cutting back on cheese and red meat.

Keep up the good work.Cool

Well, see, I had cholesterol over 200 after months of almost-vegetarian eating and cutting out sugar.  I would eat meat about once a week, and even then there wasn't much.  My good cholesterol is fantastic, and my bad cholesterol isn't too bad, but my triglycerides are out the roof, and the only two things that I could find that could possibly be affecting that besides my genes are booze and birth control, and as I'm not willing to give up my birth control, we shall see if cutting back on booze will help.  Otherwise I will end up on cholesterol meds in a few years :(
