Alternative to running in the rain

Quote  |  Reply

Hello

Normally, I run 4 miles outside every morning, with 1/2 mile walk to warm up and another 1/2 mile walk to cool down.  In addition, I'll also do 300 pushups (15 X 20) and 300 crunches (15 x 2 x 10).  The running usually takes about an hour, and the pushups/crunches usually take another 45-60 mins (yes, I'm slow and probably fat too).

Unfortunately, there's a huge rain storm going on, and I can't run in the rain (I tried a couple of times- my umbrella slows me down the whole time, and I slipped once and really hurt myself).  So I feel I am unable to do my regular running routine.

As an alternative, I did stationary marching/walking/stomping around for nearly 2 hours, along with 475 pushups (20 x 20 + 15 x 5), and 490 crunches (20 x 2 x 10 + 15 x 2 x 3)

Is this at all comparable to my normal routine, as far as calories burned, good/bad workout, etc.? Do I have to force myself outside in the pouring rain (and in the dark- I do this routine at 5AM) because there IS nothing comparable, or is there some other comparable alternative that I could do (I don't have a fancy gym membership, and I don't have any fancy machines like treadmills, bowflex machines, or even as much as dumbbells).

Thank you in advance for your help.

Interval training is much better than steady state cardio (like running) for burning fat. It's gets really cold here where I live. On off days from weights I do intervals with a jump rope. It's a lot harder than running :( 60-90 seconds jumping, 60 seconds rest. If I'm feeling energetic, I do squats, crunches, lunges or something during that 60 seconds. Usually I just walk around in a circle praying for death. 15-20 minutes of that is much harder than my 30 minute run!

Two hours of stationary and nearly 500 push-ups and sit-ups?

Um, YEAH. I'd say you had a pretty heavy work out, and keep in mind that there's no harm in taking a day to let your body rest and recover. In fact, I would recommend it. I ran Cross Country in the fall, and none of the runners were allowed to run more than 6 days a week.

Yeah, I do a lot of running in the afternoons.  But in the morning I work as an aide in a special ed classroom.  I do a lot of jumproping with one of the girls during their recess time.  I want to die by the end of it, it's so hard!  But it's fun and doesn't feel like exercise.  Between that and the one on one basketball I play with her, I get a lot of exercise in at work.

Sorry to stray off course, but she's right.  Jumproping is a great alternative and they are relatively inexpensive.  And yeah, you did a lot of exercise!

Thanks everyone for your help.  I will definitely look into purchasing a jump rope.  I actually wound up running the 4 miles anyway in the late evening (it didn't rain). The next morning, it rained halfway through my 4 miles, and I wound up getting soaked and frozen (something I was trying to avoid).

Thank you all again

how about singing in the rain? sorry couldn't resist. but yes jump roping is good for the calves too.
