40+ Always been overweight and time to change!

Quote  |  Reply
Hello all those 40+, I guess I'm really looking for some weight loss buddies, to be accountable with, we all know what we should be doing, and maybe we do it for awhile but never long enough to make some real changes that will last!  Well after a heart disease finding and 30% blockage, which I'm told is no big deal....yeah right my granfather died at 26 heart disease, my father at 52 from a massive heart attack after seeing his doctor on monday and told he was in great health had quit smoking 15 years before and lost 50 lbs and kept it off, and his father at 64 from a massive heart attack.  So now is the time before there is no time!  We do everything and anything for our children, now it's time to do something for ourselves.  Any takers?

I can relate!  I turned forty-one last week and was having trouble sleeping, went to my doc and he said I have "congestive heart failure!!"  Oh my God, I nearly dropped right there, my youngest is 8  and I have a 10 yr old and a 17 yr old.   I said enough is enough, I joined this site on Jan 7 at 237lbs and now two weeks later I am at 231.5. I am jazzed and this site has been the reason for my success. The calorie counting certainly works for me. I hope it does for you too.  I am going to add you as a friend and we can keep each other motivated OK?

Seems we have quite a bit in common, my youngest just turned 7 and my oldest is 22 the other is 20.  At my highest in 04 I hit 235, had gastric by pass and almost died the next day.  I lost a whole 15 lbs in the next year after the surgury and did everything right!  Ate healthy exercised, my body just went into starvation mode and hasn't come out.  Since then I went back up to 225.  In Feb of 06 had the heart attack and scared the **** out of me.  So my wake up call and as of this morning down to 202.8.  Was stuck at 207 for over 2 months with working out and eating right, but not logging, this site has helped me with that.  I did the kevin trudeau thing back in Sept which got me down to the 207 but don't think it was the healthest so trying the good old fashion way here!  Take care and thanks for sharing, one of my other new years resolutions.  My business partner says I don't share well....lol

andrea, you are sharing just fine! And you can keep at it, here!ckimber is right...cc is a great place to be! You will make a lot of friends along the way and get a LOT of support!

I wish you all the best with your health! I'm a mom, too, and you're right! We turn ourselves inside out for our kids. It's worth it! Sharon.

Hi my name is Kelly and I am 40 as well (will be 41 in June).  I too have similar circumstances.  I am currently at 186 and have yo yo'd most of my life.  At my highest I was 195 and I am 5'5".   I have dieted several times in the last few years and actually all of my life.  But since I had my last baby I managed to lose, at the most, about 30 lbs but as I am sure you all know it never STAYS off.

What I have found that works the best though, if I can STICK to it, is this!  Keeping a food journal, couting my calories and just working out.  No other fads or crazy diets work.  It is simply cutting back, eating healthy decent portions and the right amount of calories and getting daily or at least weeky exercise.

My problem is getting bored and cheating or just stopping because life always intrudes.  I have an almost 16 year old an 8 year old and an almost 7 year old.

I would love to have some gals to keep me motivated and on track such as yourselves as it is always more fun to share your goals and keep eachother motivated.  I just started this last week and I was at 187 and have lost a lb so far.  It is going pretty slow so far but according to the sight I need to eat about 1300 calories a day which I think is too small but I have gone to another sight and it said between 1800 and 1500 which I think is more realistic.  This sight wants me to get to 135 and I KNOW I will never see THAT number again.  My doc wants me at 150 and my goal is 145 but I would even be happy to see 160.

So anyway that's my story.  Hope to talk to you guys again and maybe we can help eachother on our road to thinness! :)

Hi Kelly!

I'm 42 (will be 43 in July) 5'6" and 186lbs (down from 192 when I started on Jan 2nd)

No kids...2 Corgis, a husband, and a 77 year old guy (my dad).

I'm a junk-food junkie, trying to reform as much as I can....and I'm aiming for 1200 - 1500 calories a day.

Oh, and I quit smoking 5 months and 2 weeks ago.

Hi!  Congrats on the smoking AND the weight loss.  That is great.  I have done this SO many times and am hoping this time is the charm.  :)  I am so sick of the yo yo thing.  My biggest problem is getting tired of "watching" my calories and just letting the hecticness of life intrude.  With my kids and work and life in general I get busy and sometimes taking the time to watch what I eat and exercise doesn't play into that.  Every time I start a new lifestyle (what I call it, never a "diet") I always do it in Jan and I have lasted up to a year but then it tends to get stale and I get distracted with life and fall back into old routines.  It tends to get too easy to go back to the old ways of just grabbing fast food and not exercising because I am too busy.  I feel so much better when I workout and KNOW this but it is really hard when life is so hectic.

That is my dilemma but I KNOW I must make this work because it is affecting my health.  I suffer from constant migraine headaches and am now on daily medication.  I know that when I workout and eat right that these occur less frequently.  My blood pressure, which has always been on the low side, despite my weight, has finally started to rise, which scared me as well.

My mom is overweight and I don't want that for myself.  There is diabetes in my family and heart disease and now that I am in my 40's I know that I can't be as reckless and not pay for it.

So that is me in a nutshell (see visions of Austin Powers LOL).  Hope to speak with you again as I truly think it helps to have others to share the ups and downs with! :)

Well hello all, so how do you guys make it through the weekends?  I do well all week while at work, but on the weekend, I like to eat out and well with a 7 year old his 2 favorite places are chuckecheese and a chinese buffet, which I too love.  But I ussually go way over my calorie budget.....any ideas?

Weekends are hard. I allow myself 1800 calories on Saturday. Usually I shoot for 1200-1500. I try to eat as little as possible during the day, so I can eat a tasty dinner.

THANKS FOR THE LIST, GAVE ME SOME IDEAS....MY WEIGHT IS FLUCTUATING SO MUCH IT'S DRIVING ME NUTS...THOUGHT I WAS FINALLY LOSING NOW 4 DAYS OF GAINING AGAIN...AND REALLY STICKING TO MY LOGS TOO SO I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO...

GRUFF HOW'S IT GOING WITH THE SMOKING AND ALL?

I haven't smoked since August 1st --- not a puff!

However, I am completely addicted to the Commit Lonzenges I'm using to reduce the the nicotine urge....I'm trying to find the calorie count on these things, and haven't been successful. I have reduced the number I use per day from 12 to about 6. I think focusing on calories really takes my mind off the lozenges.

Thanks for asking :)

Hi there,

I seem to have a lot in common with you all. I'm turning 40 in May and vow to be less than my current 249lbs by then. I am 5ft 5' and a mother of two. My oldest is turning 11 tomorrow, my youngest is 6. I find the evenings sooo hard. My breakthrought moment this week was taking more time for me. I worked out at the gym twice and am taking more time to make myself healthy meals. My current goal is to try to loose 2 lbs per week. How many calories are you ladies consuming each day?

Let's support eachother on our journey

cheers

gruffydd -

Our  circumstances are so much alike, it's scary -

I'm also 42 and will be 43 in July, I quit smoking on September 4th (after 30 yrs), have cats but no kids, and a husband I adore ;)

I am really cracking down about getting healthy and losing weight - I'm a type 2 Diabetic and have recently started to have complications due to not following a proper diet.  But I also just want for once in my life to be an active, healthy, non-obese person!

Currently, I'm 5'10" at 335 pounds (I know, it's disgusting) - I'm keeping a food journal here, working out with strength training 3x a week, and cardio at least 2 of the remaining 4 days -

Staying motivated is so hard for me, and I discourage easily, so having a group of people to talk to would be just wonderful -

Well I'm trying and I do say trying to stay at 1400 calories a week.  But after actually recording everything for the last 15 days and spending almost two hours figuring everything out.  I really am right on track for what they say.  I calculated up all the calories I consumed for the 15 days, subtracted all the burned calories from the burn meter each day.  Then divided what was left by the 3500 calories needed to lose 1 lb and came out with I should have lost 3.47 lbs and I lost 3.2 lbs.  So after all my complaining, I guess this thing really is working, it's just alot of work!  Congrats to you both on the quitting smoking, I couldn't imagine how hard that must be.  Like me giving up chocolate, with being a chocoholic all my life I guess and knowing I could never touch it again would kill me.  Keep up the good work and I know we will all be lighter next year which should be our goal. Realistic is my goal this year my doctor said be happy with 1/2 lb a week.
