Ambien and hunger?

Quote  |  Reply

Does anyone take ambien to help them sleep?  I have taken it a few times and noticed that a short time after I take it, I feel really hungry...its so weird!  Anyone else find this to happen?

Thanks CC

I take Ambien on a regular basis and have never had that problem, thank God.  It has been reported that some people sleep walk and eat on this drug though, so be aware.

I am on a drug called Imovane which is the Canadian version.. of not sure if its Ambien but I think Lunesta but it hasn't done anything to my appetite that I can think of. One thing to stay away from is the natural herb kava kava, that will make your appetite sky rocket.

I take Ambien nightly and have for years for my insomnia.  I have found that if I do not go to bed immediately after taking it, I can get hungry or chatty or both.

That's why I take it once I am already in bed.  Hope that helps!

Yes!!!  I realized that I was eating like crazy when I took it if I didn't consciously tell myself not to eat between the time I take it and go to bed.  I have really bad insomnia so I need to take it every night.  My cravings are pretty bizarre when I take it too, I go on a binge where I eat and eat and can't stop until I force myself to go to bed.  Then the next morning the only way I remember it is because I have a horrible full feeling, and then I start thinking back and remember bits and pieces of eating everything in my house!  I read up on it and aparently some people do experience "sleep eating" while taking this drug.  Now that I am conscious of this effect I don't eat after taking it and I have begun to lose weight.

I have had the same problem, I take the pill and around 15 to 30 minutes later I go on a rampage in the kitchen. Or so my son says because I can't remember a thing the next morning.

it's not hunger. all your sensations are heightened, including taste. It's a very powerful hypnotic-I mean, if you stay up you're literally tripping. I would take it when already in bed if I were you(I was on it for years and it often caused delusion that very proposterous things were a very, very good idea. Such as going to a friend's house in my socks or drawing all over myself. Also a dangerous truth potion.

i call it ambien eating and yes a good amount of people experience this.  i set aside a small snack in my allowance because i know i like to nibble a bit.

I take ambien on a regular basis.  Yes it does cause me to want to eat.  I try to keep something life a fiber bar or a few crackers by my bedside at night so I will not get up and overeat.  I have also been guilty of not knowing that I have eaten alot of  food during the night and not knowing I did it until next morning.  Yet I suffer from depression and when I don't sleep in a few days I have to take my ambien or the depression worsens.

OMG! This actually just happened to me last night!

I had a really good diet day and had eaten to my cal goal before I took my ambien. I have been on ambien for quite a while for chronic insomnia and have had this happen on several occasions, although i thought I had it figured out.

Anyway...this morning I woke up and realized I had eaten 1/2 a jar of sugar free jelly and about 1/3 of a jar of peanut butter! I know peanut butter is a trigger food for me and usually don't buy it, but Publix has this new kind that I wanted to try...

I'm considering somehow locking myself in my bedroom at night or resorting to keeping only very low cal foods in the house. (which is what I have been doing). I can't stop taking the ambien bc I can't sleep w/out it and then just end up eating bc I am up all night. Crazy stuff!
