Amenorrhea: What to expect for treatment?

Quote  |  Reply

Hi! I've recovered from anorexia but have not had my period in almost two years Frown.  The last time I went to see my doctor she didn't seem to be to concerned about it.  She said that I should wait until I'm sixteen before they do any tests or treatments.  I am really anxious to go to the doctor again because I know that they will help me get my period back. I turn sixteen in January and I will probably go to the doctor in April because that is usually when I have my checkups.  I know it is very soon to be thinking about this but I want to know what can I expect for my next doctor's visit.  What kind of tests will they do?  I have heard on these forums that they sometimes put women with this problem on birth control pills.  If they do give me the pill how long will it take for me to get my period again?  Also, are there any chances that my boobs will grow once I start taking the pill because of the hormones?

The treatment your doctor recommends will very much depend on your situation as an individual.  In terms of 'tests'... they will initially check your body-weight and will probably want to know about your diet and exercise habits.  Reason being that low body-weight (not necessarily underweight), low body-fat, a poor diet and overexercising are all common reasons for lack of periods in a young woman.

You were 115lbs back in Jan and you're 5'7".   So a healthy weight for you is something over 130lbs.  If you're not there yet, expect to be advised to keep gaining, for example.

NB If you suffered from anorexia before your body had had chance to fully develop internally there may well be complications.  Be prepared for that.

From what I have seen, everyone reacts differently to taking the pill. I had a bad experience with any, and in honesty, taking the pill is actually what caused me to have disordered eating, because I could not lose weight while I was on it, plus I gained weight on it (but for me, it was a lot of water weight, so I was constantly bloated, so like it wasn't that natural proportional weight gain). I also couldn't drink even decaf tea because it messed with my ability to metabolize caffeine (luckily that went away after I stopped taking it). So while I was on it, I was undereating. Then when I went off, I kept that same habit and that is what caused me to lose my period for real  in October 2007, and I am still struggling with getting it back.

It stinks because the pill is such a great thing, for protection, for hormone regulation, but for some people, the side effects make it senseless to take.

In your situation, it's important to try and get your period back on your own, especially since you are not done going through puberty yet. Even if you've NEVER had it, you should do it on your own. That means just trying to be as healthy as possible, and hope that you get it back. If you really feel stronly about going on the pill, then you should because it will satisfy what you want, and it probably will not even cause you side effects, because I am like the only person I know who has them lol. Your boobs will probably grow if they had a tendency to get bigger while you were still getting your period. (Some people's fat just doesn't go there, mine goes to my butt lol). But in all honesty, it does mask the loss of your period, my friend is on it for the exact reason you would be, and she still feels uneasy that she wouldn't be getting her period if she was off of the pill and it upsets her. See what I mean?

In the mean time I would look at your diet is it high enough in calories/nutrients,is your activity too high or too high for your intake? Is your body weight at its set point? A nutritionist that dealt with eds once said for many if they control their body by 5 pounds they may lack a period. Different doctors treat this issue in different ways. No matter what though even if you get a period through a pill it does not take away that your body is not in a healthy place and more prone to osteoporsis and other complications from lack of period
