amenorrhea- i lost my period..

Quote  |  Reply

Just wondering for those that have had amenorrhea how long it took you to get your period back, and what changes did u make diet/exercise to get it back.

Also did u have to gain any weight to get it back?

I had Amenorrhea for over 3 years due to malnourishment and extreme weight loss (not Anorexia Nervosa, just plain Anorexia) which scewed my hormone and caused my progesterone level to drop. I ate healthy fats and plenty of food (3000 or more calories/day), gained weight up to a BMI of 20-something, and took progesterone pills as prescribed by my OBG/YN, but none of those methods helped. I was forced to take birth control pills in a last ditch effort to restart my period. I took a pill called Zovia, which my OBG/YN had suggested. It was an extremely unpleasant experience...I suffered from "morning sickness"-like symptoms, fatigue, insomnia, major stomach pain and massive bloating, and extreme weight gain (20 lbs in a few weeks--I kid you not. My doctor said that it's permanent weight gain, and though I'm active and I eat well, it likely won't come off. I gained the 20 lbs in May and I've been trying to lose it since, so I'd tend to believe him on that.). I DID get my period back, though!!! That is worth it all, though some days it really doesn't feel worthwhile, as I feel chubby after putting on so much weight. I'm off of the pills now (I only took them until a period came), so that's the only issue that I'm still dealing with. My health is much better, though, because I'm getting a cycle! :)

I just got my period back yesterday after not having it for a year Laughing I only really got serious about trying to get it back in april, I lost it from losing weight too quickly (12lbs in about 3 weeks) exercising way too much and at too high an intensity for my body and not being able to deal with stress.

I had to gain back the 12lbs putting me at a healthy weight for my body (118lb @ 5f3), i increased my body fat from 12% to about 19% and I reduced my exercise by 75%. now all I do is 45min 3 times a week, 10minutes LIGHT cardio and LIGHT weights. If you are really underweight you may need to stop exercising until you gain. I also started yoga to help with stress and stopped tracking my calories and now just eat what I feel like.

I went from around 145 to 115 from excessive exercising and restriction of calories. I lost mine for about 2 years. Went to the doctor and she gave me this hormone pill I had to take for a week to make me have a period. Well I did it once and I had a light period but that was it. So after a few months I went back and she gave it to me again. I got the same results. It wasn't until I started eating more that I finally got my period back on my own and have continued to get it.

So, yes. If you have lost your period from being unhealthy and losing too much weight then you will need to gain some weight and get healthy. Its not easy but its possible. I honestly got scared that I was going to ruin my reproductive system and also ruin any chance to have kids later on down the road. That kind of got me to clean up my act too.
