Amy's Bowls are nasty

Quote  |  Reply

Seriously. I couldn't finish even half of the enchilada one, and the vegetables with brown rice was half a notch better (I managed to finish it because I was hungry) but it was still pretty horrible. It was completely steeped in minty taste, and some other sauce that smelled meaty but I couldn't identify it.

So far Healthy Choice is the other sort I've tried, and that was actually pretty good even though it LOOKED worse than either of the amy bowls. I think that was the turkey dinner with cherry pie desert. =3

But are there other brands/flavors that you guys like? Preferably with high protein, but I'm up to try any sort of food.

I like Smart ones

Whhhhhaaaattt???

I love the brown rice and vegetable bowl. I could eat it every day! Three times a day if money permitted!

Then again I haven't eaten them in about two or three years.

I don't eat the microwave meals anymore, I just make my own. It's easy, cheap, and I use a ton less sodium. And they are much more tasty, healthy, and have more protein and less sauce.

Yeah, I prefer to make my own also. I just don't have cooking facilities in a dorm. I get creative and can make rice and beans in my microwave sometimes, and I can steam vegetables, but it's a huge pain and impossible to do every day. Plus there are some things that I just can't make no matter what. I'm kinda looking for some variation on the canned soups that I have for dinner sometimes.

That really sucks. Does your cafeteria not have any good foods? I know I used a Foreman grill a lot in college, even if it was to make hot sandwiches. I also would throw a chicken breast or fish filet on with some veggies. Yum. Maybe I'll make that for dinner tomorrow night.

Uhm, I know something you can do (if you eat fish) is get the Gorton's seasoned fish fillets and microwave those. And then you can get the ziploc steaming bags and steam some veggies and then get those microwavable rice pouches (they make brown rice ones) and you could make a nice meal that doesn't seem so much like a microwave dinner.

I also hear the South Beach diet meals and the Kashi meals have good reviews.

I like the Lean Cuisine Teriyaki chicken stir fry. It's small  but tasty.  The "old" me would happily eat three for one meal given a chance. But alas, raising three kids and a grown up kid (the Mr.) I can't afford them so I too make my own "bowls" my teenage daughter takes them to school and she says her girlfriends are jealous that she is eating yummy steamed veggies and chicken breast while they are stuck with Pizza pops and corn dogs.   Diets are soo tough!!
I have been super impressed with the Kashi frozen meals, as I am too lazy to make my own microwave meals, despite the fact that I'm actually a pretty good cook.  XD  I've had the Lean Cuisine, Weight Watchers, etc, and didn't think they were bad, but the Kashi are the best that I've tried so far.

Just goes to show how subjective taste is.  I eat Amy's all the time and love it, but you couldn't force feed me Healthy Choice, Lean Cuisine, WW or any of those kinds.  Blech.

:)

I like the amy's pockets. To me the veggie one tastes like chicken pot pie, and the spinach one is freaking awesome. Never tried the bowls..

But i do agree with smallersizeone, the smart ones are delicious!! (aside from the fettucini alfreado i find it too chewy)

Actually, the Amy's Pesto tortellini is pretty good.
I love Amy's Meals but NOT the bowls. They're kind of slimy. I recommend trying the enchilada whole meal or the tofu scramble. *love.

heh.  I just want to say that I read this as "Amy's bowels are nasty!"

Ha ha ha

Well I did pick up a Kashi meal today before I managed to read this thread. We'll see how it goes. =3

And no, we're not allowed to have any cooking things in our rooms besides low watt microwaves and coffee makers. Otherwise I'd have a whole kitchen set up, seriously! >D

I love the Brown Rice one. The Teriyaki brown rice is good too- I think it takes more of a organic health foods taste to like them perhaps. The Amy's lasagna is a good one to try, just don't go for the tofu one- it uses soy cheese so it isn't as lasagna-ey as the regular one. I only buy the tofu one now, but it takes a lot of adjusting to. The soups are good and the pizzas (enough for 2 servings) are incredible- the vegan roasted veggie is best.

Just curious, how is it that you found it slimy? I've never had an issue with them being anything but like a home cooked brown rice with steamed veggies type thing.

I just tried the Kashi Southwest Style Chicken and it was excellent! So I'm pleased with that and will definitely get it sometime again. Still going to see if I can find all of your suggestions.

I think I will give Amy one more try, but this time with the meals not the bowls.. I was surprised to see Whole Foods didn't carry anything but the bowls though.

PS "I think it takes more of a organic health foods taste to like them perhaps" -- I lol'd at that

I love Amy's Bowls and meals!  Most of the product line is gluten free and some are both dairy and gluten free, which is exactly what I need.

I think if you are more accustomed to the taste of the more "mainstream" frozen meals like Lean Cuisine, Healthy Choice, or Weight Watchers then then Amy's meals are definitely going to taste different. IMO, they taste much better!  Give them another chance and let your taste buds adjust to the more natural ingredients and the lower amount of sodium and other additives and preservatives.

Sorry, posted twice! Embarassed

I don't know. See, I like full flavor. I don't think it's my taste buds; I've been eating healthy for a while now and I love vegetables and many "organic" foods. Just not frozen ones so far.

I just tried another organic frozen meal today, "Helen's Kitchen" or something like that, and it was extremely bland. Blah at that. These organic meal makers need to step it up; but then, maybe people will buy it just because it says organic.

I am addicted to Lean Cusines Panini's... preferably the steak and cheese one Smile they are SO good, and don't taste "lean" at all! I could honestly eat one everyday. Healthy Choices steamed bowls are really good...especially the chicken marinara. Try those!! YUM.
